I love Costner - but Lawdy... isn't part of the craft to become the character in every possible detail? So much for his vocal coach!

I feel I must defend Kevin Costner for the accent faux-pas. I was a huge fan of his at the time (and still am but there are 5 other guys occupying my attention). I remember the big hoopla about the accent. Kevin wanted to do the accent but director Kevin Reynolds nixed it. He thought it would be a distraction. In the end, the lack of an accent was the distraction. However, if you'll listen closely, there are some scenes in the movie where he does have a slight accent. The best line from the movie? An Alan Rickman line of course: "Locksley. I'll cut your heart out with a spoon."

Alan Rickman (in anything, really, but especially as the Colonel in S&S) just makes my tummy do flip-flops! I think it's his voice (remember when he's reading the poetry to Marianne? "For there is nothing lost... that is not found... if sought... sigh)
And Rasputin! You haven't seen it??? You must rent it today! He's totally in the part!

Ok... That's it! Blockbuster, here I come!
Do read through the whole of our threads... we're SO insane - we go off topic SO much! LOL! We're just killing time until we (hopefully) get a note from one of the straight guys or their family and friends... (Which HAS happened!)

Come on Mark Finegan! Schools out soon, is it not? Hit the boards and dish with us!

Meanwhile - it's literature, Brannaugh (YUM!) and Rickman!

Ok... I'm gonna break out my VHS of Robin Hood before I go... or Quigly Down Under... I'll avoid the ones with Hugh Grant and Tim Robbins... Never saw his film debut... it's - shall we say NC-17! !

Peace! --De

Oh, girl... you and I are gonna get along jest fine! As far as getting off-topic, that's my specialty, like it or not! Speaking of straight guys, I'm actually shocked that there are so many husbands into QE! I guess I shouldn't be, because who wouldn't love them, but my ex would NEVER have watched it (perhaps contributing to my initial glee at finding Queer Eye?)
And if you wanna talk Kenneth Branaugh, have you seen Much Ado? Laugh-out-loud, I'm-the-only-one-in-the-room-who-appreciates-the-punchline-FUNNY! And, let's face it, girls, he's hot as hell! (Sorry if I'm repeating things here, I haven't finished all my research into old posts... just thought I'd share!

Dark Harbour... Hmm... another Blockbuster choice!--De

I think you would like "An Awfully Big Adventure",even though Hugh Grant was out of his depth (again), and the love interest was under-age and clueless. Don't be scared off by the sex scenes in "Love Actually". They are part of the point of the movie- not cheap thrills. Unfortunately Alan Rickman is not in them..Hugh Grant makes a very unconvincing Prime Minister..but a charmer I saw on SHOWTIME with him is "Just a Boy". Rated G for girly and goofy. Back to Rickman..this may squick you, but in "Close My Eyes" he plays the husband of a woman who is having an affair with her own brother. Except that the character was super-rich, the husband is much like my lover. Distracted..intelligent..a charmer, but quite genuine at home. "Rasputin" is worth buying second hand if you can't find it new. "Quigly Down Under" is a flawed film. Tom Selleck is as boring as Costner, and Laura San Giacomo- his love interest (who was great in "Sex Lies and Videotape"- and James Spader- always sexy) was ridiculous in this one. Only watch it for Rickman who plays a racist murderer with delusions of grandeur. Rickman was sweet in "Blow Dry" where he plays a divorced straight hairdresser whose wife has left him for another female hairdresser. But that isn't the point of the film..it's about a hairstyling competition and very funny. It's by the same writer as "The Full Monty" which is another fun film about ordinary guys trying to make some extra cash by putting on a strip show..I havn't seen "Calendar Girls" yet..but that idea. Did you ever see "Best in Show"? Funnyfunny.
But you were talking about Rickman's "Robin Hood..Prince of Thieves"..I have the 2-disk special edition DVD and it has some of the cut scenes- especially with Geraldine McEwan who plays his witch mother Mortiana. My favorite lines in the regular movie are "I had a very sad childhood, I never knew my parents, it's amazing I'm sane." and "You - my room at 10:30 tonight. You - 10:45. And bring a friend."LOL not half obsessed am I? notevayas

If you enjoy HOURS of Alan Rickmans voice (and don't have a jealous lover who doesn't believe you like antique morality tales) you should order the book-on-cassette "Return of the Native" by Thomas Hardy that Rickman reads.

Probably not, not until the end of June.

Sweetie - I saw the interview on E! Entertainment television. Costner stated himself that he tried the vocal coach but didn't try hard enough and continuously slid in out out of the American accent until the director nixed it in FRUSTRATION - not personal preference. Costner had several irons in the fire - including his separation and divorce. He didn't take the time necessary to work the accent - and has commented since that his theatical "ear" has a great deal of difficulty assimilating accents.

I cut him slack on the life interrupting art front - but not for being dismissive about ever trying again. It IS part of the craft - and for as stellar a writer/producer/director as he is... I would just like to see him step up to the plate and streatch further as an actor.

Peace to you. --De

I went on a video binge when I wasn't well - and decided to run the list of my fave actor's credits. I love both Donald and Keifer Sutherland as well as Rickman. I rented "Close My Eyes" along with selections of both Sutherlands. The video guy looked at me remarkably strangely as I handed him the VHS tapes.

Found out why.

They all had the same theme.

Need I say more? LOL! Peace -- De.

ooooh, thanks, Notevayas... I'll have to see if the library can get me a copy of that. Hours of Alan Rickman's voice??? I may never be the same again!

Which just goes to prove you can't believe everything you read. I took my info from a print interview with the Kevins. {{shrug}} Oh well, it still didn't bother me as much as other people.

I caught the tiniest glimpse of a commercial - and totally missed the title. Alan plays the lead - and a doctor, most likely surgeon - in a movie coming out soon. Be watching, kiddies. --De

Just saw him in Love, Actually last night. I didn't really like his character, but he was sexy as usual in it (he often plays bad guys, but he does it so GOOD!) The movie itself was awesome... I must have cried 5 times at least.
I LOVE Blowdry! It comes on Bravo alot and I watch it every time. Between Alan Rickman and Josh Harnett, there's always something yummy on the screen!

EXCUSE ME? WHEN DID I GET Feung Shueid? (SP?)

Odd place, mid 500's...

Anyway I was wrong - NOT Theatres, HBO. The movie is called, "Something the Lord Made" - and DRAT, I don't have HBO. Sigh... yet another thing to wait a year for on VHS.
Rickman's showing his age a bit... but still... that velvet voice!
Peace! --De

Ah, he's like a fine wine or good cheese... or me! He just gets better with age (not unlike Sean Connery). His cheeks were a little puffy for a while, but now he's getting these delicious vertical lines in them that I want to lick... shame on me!

Well... it was fun while it lasted... let's see... totally plugged in...

When I'm "ON" - I'm a TV showing PBS, CNN, Comedy Central or Bravo. No body better EVER call me a "flat screen"!
When I'm "DOWN" - I'm my dinosaur of a computer.
When I'm 'moody' - I'm a vacuum cleaner... LOL!
When I'm piggish - I'm a food processor.
When I'm cool - I'm an Air Conditioner.
When I'm angry - I'm a Heat Pump.
When dealing with trolls - I'm a toaster that's set too high.
When full of hot air... - I'm a blow dryer.

Totally plugged in, huh? All that work to get out of fashionista... only to land on the table top as an appliance. Sigh.

Life is just not fair. **Whine, weep, boo-hoo...**
Peace, TTB. --De

As for all the fuss about Jai, it's an illusion that's he's coming up with these aphorisms and sensitive sayings all by himself. He's well-coached and his spiels are well laid-out in advance.

TV Guide 11/13/03: Queer Eye guys defend Jai--by Daniel R. Colleridge

Quote:

Which Fab 5 member is your fave on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? (Carson, Ted, Thom, Kyan), But how 'bout poor Jai Rodriguez? The "Culture Vulture" is so mocked, so maligned... ..."Culture is the hardest role, by definition, on this show," Executive Producer, and Co-Creator, David Metzler admits to TV Guide Online. "It's the least tangible thing. You can't touch it. Jai is so good at so many things, which includes his background as a performer, singer, someone who deals with people socially." ...A woman is more apt to tell a gay man what she really wants, than a straight man," Metzler offers. Jai knows women as close and intimate friends, and knows what they're looking for." Metzler says we'll see "a lot more Jai" in season two starting Nov. 18th at 10 PM/ET on Bravo - and he'll offer more tutoring on social skills. "Jai's going to put the details together that help the guy show love to his wife or girlfriend. He and Ted may work together to help him prepare the perfect meal and ambiance and know what to say. It's stuff like that, in your cultural life as a straight guy, you may not know how to pull off... ...One of the problems we may have had (in season one) was, we weren't sure how to communicate how to do these things," Metzler adds. "Jai is helping us to figure out how we can communicate those things in a clear way so that straight guys at home have advice to take away." "Just to add to that," Executive Producer and Co-Creator, David Collins chimes in, "Jai's become the resource guy for the show, a walking Zagat (guide) of cultural information."

Hmmmmmmmm... the CREATORS of the series seem to DISAGREE with your premise that Jai has everything handed TO him. Gee... I wonder whose opinion has more weight...?

Enough said? Thought so. --De

De, in light of some recent posts, I'm bringing this back to the top. As you wrote, Enough said. Done.
