It was all very commendable. Rah Rah... <yawn>
I am not sentimental about high school sports.
The kids were adorable, but I missed the surprise for them that Jai was referring to?

Before the ladies get sappy all over you, know that I wasn't putting down coach Patrick or your school. I don't know if you are a fan of the show Queer Eye, or have watched many previous episodes, but I was reacting to the change in direction of the show.
This show has been successful against the odds by being cutting edge and edgy. Now many episodes are manipulative tear jerkers. Cute kids, puppies, assorted inspirational stories more fitting for the Oprah magazine.
I like kids and puppies and your school and team are exceptional. I think the show did much good in demonstrating that all athletes are not the ignorant so-called professional spoiled brats that are portrayed in trouble on the evening news, or that some of us remember from high school. For example, if you're up this early, you may be a runner like me!
Try to step back, and try to look at this objectively. If the Fab 5 decided to honor a well deserving Boy Scout Leader who had saved someone's life and needed new uniforms for his troop would you watch the show? If he also saved a kitten and was in a wheelchair would you be likely to cry? Or would you feel manipulated and switch the channel?
I'm glad your coach and school got help, but doing good deeds is not what made "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" a success, and, as a fan of the show, I don't want to see it lose viewers by changing it's format.
Besides that, I had the whole concept of 'team spirit' rammed down my throat in high school. It's all very well when you are accepted into the group, but it just makes those who are unwelcome in the group feel more ostracised. Also, when you get into business, you may find that being a 'team player' may mean keeping your mouth shut when a client makes a racist joke, or when a boss asks you to sign a backdated or deceptive document or agreeing to fire a pregnant or older receptionist.
The Lions is a team to be proud of. Not all teams are.

Well, personally for me it's because I haven't seen it yet. My work schedule has been such that I'm turning into a walking zombie & I fell asleep on the couch at 9pm. I do have it Tivo'd and will watch it tonight.
Concerning the changes to the show - we've talked about it before. Sadly, the element of surprise that was there in Season 1 is not longer possible due to the popularity of the show. And, when the John Bargeman episode (a guy that really didn't need much help) is voted #1 by the fans in a recent survey for their last marathon, I guess it shows that maybe people like having their heart strings tugged. *shrugs*
Anyway, as I said, I haven't seen this episode yet, but am anxious to read everyone's summaries! BTW, I wasn't part of any of the popular in-crowds during school either.

Well, I just have to say that I HATED high school (and elementary) and just seeing school hallways makes me hyperventilate and I can't even walk across the edge of the campus gym on my way to the workout rooms without feeling enormous apprehension because gym class was such a nightmare --- but this made me feel WAY better about the whole thing.
Your school looked like a wonderful place, and the basketball guys were amazing. If all schools had the sort of standards that yours does, for athletes and everyone else, this world would be headed in a far better direction. You are a very very very lucky student!

note to notey: I think the surprise Jai was referring to was the Harlem Globetrotters.
I loved this episode. It's wonderful to see a coach that supports and encourages academic achievement. At the end of the episode, every member of the team had the name of a college under his picture.....THAT is an accomplishment! I'm so proud of Pat and that team. What an inspiration to the students that will follow. And, thanks to the Fab 5, the environment will be 100% better! I guess you could say I'm one of the sappy ladies who cried along with Thom and Jai.....best moment: when Kyan gave Thom a kiss. There will be some who will criticize those reactions, but I don't understand how anyone can be judged for having a sincere, honest reaction. Should they hold back their tears and pretend that they aren't affected by what they've witnessed? Wow, these are some harsh "rules" these days....don't laugh during the nudist episode, don't cry when your heart is touched by the accomplishments of some fine young men......
QE is bringing in a lot of variety this season and, as a result, we are seeing more of the character of the Fab 5 themselves.......and I'm thrilled, pleased, and impressed with the kind of human beings they are. Pat Mangan is a great example of a teacher and coach who reaches within himself to give to his students and he deserves this recognition.

I didn't think they even usually have the thread up until the next day - but it's not over till 11 and I have to go to work the next morning!!! (This is Wednesday, right? I've not had quite enough coffee yet.)
I much prefer the slobby-straight-guy shows to the tearjerkers too, but KCee is right - they're playing to what the masses want to see. And I think considering the quality of television that the masses gobble up, we're probably lucky Queer Eye is even still on.
But although I whined about this one being yet another tearjerker, I really appreciated them showcasing a school where academics are just as important as athletics, and where there are excellent teachers with very high standards
and students going to Harvard who may not have had much hope with the school systems that are the norm. Especially inner city schools.

Well, tomasulo, I got teary at the banquet myself, and I'm not usually weepy. And I'm all over the place about the direction the show is taking. I don't want it to become just a string of tearjerkers, but if they hadn't branched out, people would complain that it's boring and the same old thing every week. I love the slobby straight guy ones - Kevin Downey may be my favorite; John Bargeman was one of my least favorites - but like someone said earlier, the element of surprise is long gone from those.
I think my big concern is that Bravo doesn't turn it into a tearjerker show just for ratings, at the expense of the humor and uniqueness that it's always had, and that made it a hit. I guess some of us fear Bravo's motives, in a way - that the do-good shows are just to win ratings. And of course they need ratings, but I don't want it to turn into just another insipid reality show.
I also am starting to believe I'm REALLY overthinking this whole thing.

hey tomasulo,
I am not criticizing your reactions or anyones. I was just explaining my honest reaction which was <yawn>. Kyan giving Thom a kiss.. yawn again. I much preferred Ted and Kyan snarking at each other in the gym.. when Kyan promised the wine-sipping Ted, that Kyan would be Just as helpful to Ted in his food segment, as Ted was (not) being in Kyan's fitness segment.
But I'm not judging! Am I? How can expressing my opinion be judging? I did reassure 'student' that he/she would be praised when the offices opened later. I kinda felt bad that grouchy notey was the only one to post yesterday, HENCE STUDENT'S NEED TO SHOUT.. sappy ladies Was a snark.. sorry, but you guys ARE you know! And you're proud of it!
I laughed during parts of the nudist episode. I cried with the soldier's wife when the reality of seperation seemed to hit her as the Fab 5 were showing her the box they were packing to send to Iraq, and when they gave the couple the his and her Apple notebook computers so that they could correspond and he could watch his daughter grow. I cried like a goddamn baby!
But I don't like being manipulated emotionally. And I have very bad memories of high school less than a dozen years old. Very bad. Worse than not being in the popular group. Fearing for my life bad. And when the 'team spirit' turns against you, that's a mob mentality and people get hurt.
I'm glad Thom has the life experiences that will let him cry over this kind of event. I was impressed by the players also. But I don't cry over sports related things and never have and never will. Each to his/her own. Right?

I really enjoyed this episode. The coach was great for inspiring those guys both athletically and academically. The guys gave "props" to a coach that encouraged them in school and in life. And "our boys" were fabulous (as usual) for assembling all the ingredients for a well-deserved tribute.
As Carson would say..."there's no 'I' in "team"...there's an 'M' and a 'E' though!
The highlights for me were:
...the guys in ballet class...Jai and Thom with the team as they took new group photos...the new display cases, new floor, the 3 new laptops, TV and DVD player, new uniforms, trophies and Jai's surprise, the Harlem Globetrotters...Jai and Thom cracking up over Ted's attempt to dribble a basketball
And there were a LOT of great quotes!
"Hey, hey, [expletive deleted], [expletive deleted]--those pleated pants have GOT to go!"
Ted: (after the reveal) "They sound like they're in pain!"
Carson: "I wanna pick teams for once in my life!"
"Do we have 'diva snaps'?"
Kyan: (holding Pat's shoe) This is a petri dish in here! There's a fungus among-us!
God bless America, that's an ugly tie!
Basketball's the game that scared me the most in high school.
This is bring back some VERY scary memories!
Kyan and Jai on rhe basketball court: I feel like we're at a distinct disadvantage.
Kyan (to Ted) What in God's name are you doing with a glass of wine? Now you're a bigger lush than Thom Filicia.
Ted: Wow, this gives me so much energy I wanna...punch Kyan!
Kyan: Really? Finally some physical activity from you!
Kyan got each of the guys their own grooming kit and gave them a little primer on athlete's foot and jock itch (holy mother of--EEK!)
"If it burns when you pee, we're talking about something COMPLETELY different!"
Thom: "OK, I'm your new teacher and from now on there's no homework!"
(looking at Pat's old office chairs) "Were you a pimp at one point in your life?"
"If you're ever in the doghouse, at least you'll have a comfortable sofa!"
(holding a phone) "Do you know you can get tuberculosis if you use this?"
"We're going to be able to play basketball today!"
Carson: "I couldn't play basketball earlier! Why would I be able to play today?"
I'm sure I missed a few gems...but then there were SO many!lol

Okay, Bravo, from now on, please check with notey to be sure the episode doesn't evoke any bad memories for him. I think they probably would have re-thunk that circus ep if they had realized how I felt about clowns! I'm not a sports fan but I do recognize the benefits it can offer kids if the adults support them in focussing on cooperation rather than competition, learning to win and lose gracefully, being part of a team, achieving your own personal best, and having fun! And sometimes it's sports that motivates a kid to go on to college when it's possible he/she would never have considered it or had the opportunity.
BTW, I am a sappy lady but it can be insensitive to refer to any group of people as if they weren't individuals...."stupid men", "silly gays".......I think you get my point.

Sounds like one of Thom's outtakes (pardon my paraphrasing):
Thom helping himself to a SG's beer......
Ted: Can I get one of those?
Thom: Want to share?

Well, I'm gonna come into the fray but you gotta know that I watched my recorded episode at about 10 last night and fell asleep so this is pretty disjointed til I can view it again (Guess, I could go with Notey's <yawn>)
First, I thought it was interesting and great that all agreed that HS gym class and sports were a nightmare. I'm in the same boat so I really enjoyed seeing jocks that didn't behave like JOCKS!
Then the school--it wasn't PS--- Wasn't it the Frederick Douglass Academy? So while the students were needing motivation and the coach was great at that motivation, I didn't get the sense that the kids were from the gangs or the street. (I don't know what that had to do with anything, Barb--think before you type!)
Did love the snarking between the FF. Enjoyed that no one seemed uncomfortable with touching, hugging, kissing (one of the students kissed the coach, as well as Kyan kissing Thom) etc.
I'm not big on tear jerkers but I agree with those who have commented that they like the variety of this season. Some downright silly episodes like the nudist as well as the serious ones like the guy with CF. Yes, I'm sure it is audience/ratings driven but I think the FF are handling it all pretty evenly.
Also, I think it is interesting there are more sports celebs recently, beginning last season (I think) with the Jets. Having Boomer Esiesen (don't even ask me to spell that--it's a miracle I know who he is!) in the Denali a few weeks ago really shocked my socks.
I also like how all the guys ae more involved in each other's schtick recently--it makes them all feel more well rounded for me.
That's it for now--no depth, I know.
Now, I'm ready for a margarita with the rest of you.
Signed another sappy lady,
SLB _,,/
OH! p.s. I meant to tell why I missed the real show--I was out to dinner with my HS buddy (my first boy friend, if you gotta know), the man who was the third in the triad of my saga last spring when my gay friend died homeless from 'liver cancer.'
It was such a treat to spend the evening with this man--he is just so great. Sadly he was here to visit with his sister who is dying. Anywho--he has been a designer and pattern maker for years so we dished Project Runway (Jay deserved to win) and QE (doesn't watch it regularly but enjoys it when he does).

CONGRATS QE FOR YOUR EMMY NOMINATION
I haven't made up my mind about the new format... but this particular show came just when I needed it.
Difficulties with my Godson and all he is dealing with just made me wonder if there were any good educators left on planet earth. I'm not for cloning - normally - but if this man's techniques could somehow be implanted in teachers nation wide, more kids just might have a chance to make it on this earth.
It truly encourages me to see a teacher that has so greatly opened his heart, that their success or failure actually effects HIM personally.
I applaud the students as well. These young men have taken their teacher's instruction and made life choices that will benefit not only them, but our society.
Thank you, Gentlemen Five, for the care you pour into the lives you encounter - and for showing us people that remind all of us to take the time to edify those lives we touch daily.
Children learn what they live.
Thank you for showing us a man that teaches kids to live and strive for excellence. May we all strive to do so as well!
(Hopscotch? Giggle!)
Peace preciouses!

Hi everyone,
I haven't posted in awhile, but this ep really touched me on a more personal level than some of the others this season. I too am not a big sports fan, and I can count on 1 hand the number of sports games I went to in high school.
This was a good episode. As an African-American with lots of male cousins, some of whom have gone to college and some who has never even thought about college. It really does my heart good to see that most/all of these guys went to college.
I lived in the inner city most of my life. And in my neighborhood, a lot of weight is put upon being a star, be it athletic like Kobe Bryant, or a rap star like 50 cent, or some type of psuedocelebrity like P Diddy. I'm sure even in non-inner city school some silly girl wants to be just like Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears, ya know "dumb" blondes.
So it just make me happy to see that someone appreciates the value of an education as well as athletics. Because, not everyone who plays an athletic sport will get an athletic scholarship, but if you have a stellar academic record, then more doors will be opened.
I have a cousin who was in the same boat as many of these kids might have been in if not for this coach. He played football, and he did not get recruited. He thought that football would be his ticket, so he did not pay as much attention to school as he should. There is only so much my family could do for him. He just did not make the grade. Luckily (or unluckily) he enlisted in the Army right after high school, so he is doing okay. (Aside from the Irag war and all that is). Maybe if the coaches at his school could have been like Coach Mangan, he may have been able to go to college instead. You never really know.
Anyway, that aspect of the episode alone, makes it a sentimental one for me.
My favorite part of course is the end credits, without any hip tips, just the kids name and the school they will be attending.
I wish them all luck.

I finally saw the episode, and I really enjoyed it. I was never a student athlete, but I do believe in school athletics, and music & the arts, but not at the expense of grades! I was so pleased when they talked about the coach's 80% rule! When I was in high school the atmosphere was that the football & basketball teams (and the cheerleaders) floated through because they were 'stars' and that usually created resentment amongst the rest of us. I'm so glad that the academic side is emphasized because that will get you farther in life than the athletics.

Or, should that have read "...further in life..."? Hey, I'm a science major, not an English major! LOL

Mr. Magan was my high school coach. He has always been a great person. I'm happy someone has recognized that.

It was a pleasure to see such a commtted and devoted teacher. You were lucky to have him as a coach and he's a lucky man to have students like you and the team that was shown on Queer Eye. I wish you all much success in your lives. Big hugs to the whole bunch of ya.....or, if you would prefer, "diva.......shoulder!". (Did I get that right?)

Chalk up another person who doesn't have fond memories of gym class. Like Carson said being picked last and so forth. But this coach was a wonderful man and more schools need people like him. One of my favorite teachers was a English teacher and basketball coach also. It's just my female gym class I wanna forget about!
Anyway, I loved the banter between Kyan and Ted-yes snarky! But then there was Kyan coming over to kiss Thom on the head later. So I guess what I'm saying is I like the guys when they're both tough and tender! I don't mind them mixing it up with the tender episodes and fun ones like the circus episode which Bravo please show again cause my DVR was having problems last week!
I just enjoy seeing the guys every week on Bravo-I just worry about all these comedians coming on with their reality shows-sorry for funny moments for me the Fab 5 rule!

THOM....THOM...THOM...:
My favorite moments were when THOM was laying on the gym floor. THOM and Jai laughing at Ted....
That photo, did you catch Jai and THOM's facial expressions???
At IKEA, that would be THOM running and hiding from DD or DD hiding in that shoe.
And the tearie one of the Fab 5. I would wipe his tears with the softest kleenix tissue.
Was Ky crying also???

Did you see when THOM had on those basketball shorts. I think the waistliine was a little big on him. I would of volunteered to hold up those shorts on him, you too???

I know for a fact Carson wears briefs, because of one of my favorite Carsonisms: "Boxers are hot, and by that I mean *guys who box,* not the underwear, so get rid of 'em!"

What do you think the rest of the Fab 5 wears to nighty-night? I want to know what that conservative one wears?(t-shirt and shorts, right??) As an example the Christmas eppy(robe, tee, socks and jammie bottoms?)

He also proved it in the Nudist episode.

I understand that he proved quite a lot in the Nudist episode, Susan. He proved he is gorgeous and he proved that he is not a snob!
IMHO, though, intelligent men are hot. Boxers can be a bit lacking in that department. Brain damage is a risk of the "sport".
As for boxer shorts, I'll keep mine. And Carson can keep his plastic flip-flops and colorful personalized briefs. Though I agree with his choice for himself if only because it ensures he will only date men with a sense of humor.
I mean, sex is the funniest as well as fun thing really. If you can't laugh, you are going to get
REALLY
REALLY
REALLY embarrassed!

H-m-m-m-m!
I promised long ago that I would remain aloof from the boxer/brief fray, but this won't be the first time I've lied to myself.
That curious breed of investigate scientists who feed the media with trivia guaranteed to titillate announced some years ago that, sometimes, wearing jockey style underwear can cause birth defects and should be avoided because "the little fellas that cause pregnancy become complacent when they're "all cooped up" in a little pouch.
Ever since my mother stopped buying my clothes for me many years ago, I've worn boxer shorts, even though procreation has never been one of my goals.
so sez Supe, "'Cheez, Louise!' This could be as controversial as Global Warming. I wonder if the Sierra Club has taken a position on the subject."

Was just watching this episode this morning and I love what Pat Mangan said about his baseketball team AND the Fab Five...they ARE a true team, a winning team and should be considered as such...not just by their individual pursuits but also by their brotherly bond and their enthusiasm for this "project" they've undertaken. It may not seem that I feel that way but I DO. It's clear how much they enjoy working together and appreciate each others' talents. We, as fans, could learn a lot from them.
