I posted this on another thread during the last week, but thought it was worth repeating. I am curious if the designs will also be judged by the "standards". Sasha being selected for the Olympic Figure Skating Team happened after the show taping, but it would interesting to see what she wears to the Olympics (but guess that also depends on what we see tonight:-)

=================================================

According to the United States Figure Skating Association Handbook, clothing for skating competitions "must be modest, dignified, not garish or theatrical in design...." Bare midriffs or too many beads, sequins or feathers are a no-no. Men must always wear full-length trousers and ladies must have skirts and pants covering the hips and posterior, according to the rule book.

Ice Skating Fashion Trivia

Ice skating’s history is as rich and colorful as it’s choice of clothing has been. In the very early years, figure skaters such as Madge Syers simply competed in her Victorian era dress. It was the early 1900’s. It wasn’t until 1924 when Sonje Henie shook up the skating fashion scene by competing in shorter skirts which were the style for girls her age. However it gave her a definite advantage for jumping and spinning without the restraints of the longer dresses. A true trend setter, Henie had her own Norwegian dress makers who color matched and coordinated her outfits, bloomers and all. Cecilia Colledge of Great Britain remarked that "Sonje never came on in the same outfit twice." After Henie, ladies of all ages began wearing shorter skirts.

Fabrics used by the early skaters: Although many believe wool, (which was used in most practice wear), actually lovely silks and velvets in all sorts of beautiful colors were used just as they are today. Skaters who practiced outdoors on natural ice needed the warmth of wool and heavier fabrics. Fur trim was often added for not only esthetic reasons but for staying warm. Competitions were often held outdoors so a fur jacket was for warming up but for the events, out came the chiffon and silk materials.

Since the 1970’s there’s been a wide variety of stretchy materials which lend themselves to the athletic side of ice skating. For example, while Lycra and Spandex once ruled, Sueded Supplex or SilkSkyn represents the new generation skating fabrics. It is warmer and softer than the Lycra of old while offering a less shiny, matte finish to the garment. Many practice coordinates such as skirts and jackets are made of Supplex, replacing the scratchy woolen wear of yesteryear.

Competition: Michelle Kwan has one of the top haute couture designers, Vera Wang, making her dresses. They are often made of silk with crystals added for sparkling decoration. One of her dresses can cost up to $40,000!

In contrast, Ann Patrice McDonough’s dresses are handmade by her mother. So were Peggy Fleming’s competition dresses.

Sasha Cohen, Kimmie Meissner, Michelle Kwan Nominated To 2006 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team - Jan 14, 2006

St. Louis -- The U.S. Figure Skating International Committee announced today the nomination of Sasha Cohen, Kimmie Meissner and Michelle Kwan to the 2006 United States Olympic Team, pending USOC approval. Cohen and Meissner placed first and second at the 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Louis, Mo., respectively.
“The International Committee considered all of the relevant information and picked the best possible U.S. Olympic Team to represent the United States in Torino,” International Committee Chair Bob Horen said. “We believe that Sasha, Kimmie and Michelle will compete in a manner that will make our country proud.”

Cohen won her first U.S. title at the 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships Saturday night.

“I made it to the end and stayed on my feet,” Cohen said after getting off the ice. “It wasn't perfect, but it was good. After I started getting into it I started to enjoy it.”

Remind me as I am not an avid skating fan - is Sasha Cohen retired from competitive skating, or is she up to compete in the winter Olympics?

Also, who do you anticipate to design both a beautiful and a functional skating dress? Daniel V. seems to blend those two elements well.
eatapeach4peace
thanks, Sandi - I think I was posting my skating question at the same time you posted the info. It will be interesting to see if the designers have to folllow those costume rules!

i'm interested to see if this is an individual project or team project tonite...........also interested to see what's up with Santino's Russian fur hat........& drama drama drama..........

Before this episode airs...Sasha Cohen wore a very colorful, interesting outfit for her short program last week. It was different from the usual type of skating outfit (like she wore in the long program, [expletive deleted] hum) Will be interesting to see if by any chance if that short-program outfit is the winning design.

OOOOOMY gawDDDDD Z got it yipper i liked it too

Until Santino is gone, I'm gone. I will not watch that over-the-top jack-a** any longer. I'm sorry to miss Jay juding last week, but you picked the guy who never listens to anyone but his own oversized ego over the guy who is trying to strecth himself into new directions.

I've had enough. Auf Wiedersehn Project Runway!
sassy5
I had such a weird feeling that ZUlema would win & EMmet would be out. I think i got it right this week!!!!! I want that Jay McCarrol bag!
I'm glad Santino wasn't cut b/c he is def more creative than Emmett who is actual a menswear designer trying to learn womenswear.........
i can't wait til next week......wish we could watch it online!

She'll be in the 2006 games. I agreed with what they did. The back made Santino's outfit unusable basically. He shoulda known better. Zulema deserved to win. I thought Emmett's costume was boring myself.
ontherange
only Rebecca could make an ice skating outfit look hot, lol. well, Katarina Witt could also, actually.
Jirel
YEA! Jay's going to be back, Yipeee!!!! I am so looking forward to next week's show. And it sounds like a [expletive deleted] fight. LOL!

Everyone notice that they totally toned down the Santino image this time around? I wonder if they were trying to make us think he was going to be off (combined with Heidi's remarks) or if it was just the way things went?). I already knew the "I want your soul." bit was just funny, you could see Andre laughing through it even on the previews. This was a good episode but I am so looking forward to next week.

I'm much more of a Jay fan than a Rob fan.

I guess we all know for sure now that bad behavior cancels out bad design. I am totally stunned that Santino is allowed to stay once more. Emmitt's wasn't any more boring than Kara's. Santino's was just BAD!!!!

again, this is a travisty that BRAVO has put upon us.....obviously SANTINO should have been out....but ratings will always override ...........it is obviously all about the money to BRAVO....I for one am DISGUSTED by the outcome of this challenge...... SHAME ON YOU BRAVO.....when the [censored] hits the fan, I hope you are standing in front for the splatter!!!!!!!!

Knock me over with a feather-I can't believe Zulema won!! I thought she would be out. Her garment looked a little naked to me-too much flesh was showing. I thought Nick or Daniel had better skating outfits. I will admit I'm in love with Nick's designs and Daniel's run a close second. The wildman Santino dodges another bullet. How many of you are playing the face-off chalenge? I haven't been doing very well. The previews of next week show last year's winner Jay Carroll as a judge-can't wait to see him. Thanks for reading. "Carry on".
historygal
I'm curious as to why the judges have not noted the striking similarities between Santino's designs from week to week. Every week, it's the same criss-cross detail over the breast--whether constructed of twisted or braided fabric or, as in this week's skating dress, of feathers. In fact, his dress for Nikki Hilton was almost exactly the same as the dress he made out of muslin for the first challenge.

Despite his much vaunted creativity, the repetition of his designs reveals that he is actually quite lacking in creativity. He can't seem to conceive of a different kind of construction or different look. He's making the same thing over and over again.

I find this more disturbing than his shameful arrogance.
jethrotull
This is it for me. No more Project Runway. Tonight's episode was ridiculous and this, along with all other reality shows, can go screw themselves. This isn't reality..oh wait, it's reality in terms of how shows [censored] with their viewers by manipulating "reality" to get ratings. screw that.

At the end all the judges were like, Santino's got to go. But then of course Heidi has to add in the little tidbit about what's better, overdesigning or underdesigning. I knew that Emmit was out right there and then.

This show's [censored] up. Yeah Emmit's design kinda sucked, but how could you get rid of that over Santino's travesty? It's insanity.

Anways, I wasn't a big fan of Zulema's either. Quite surprised to see that one win. I like Chloe's much better, but I think I liked Andre's and Nick's best of all.
giz2000
I'm sorry to see Emmett go...he is very talented..I loved his tailored looks, but I think this challenge was a little too much for a menswear designer...but, I can't believe Santino is still there...his stuff is just too out there. I think they keep him around for the drama.

IMHO, Zulema's dress was pretty, but a little too hoochie...
arturo
I have to say that I'm really not surprised that Santino didn't get kicked. It is obvious that Project Runway is about drama (like all other reality shows) and not about fashion. Though it wasn't great, Emmet's costume was much better than Santino's, but I'm sure the producers come out to save him before every judging. They want people to keep watching, and Santino brings drama and friction to the show, so in the interest of ratings, anything goes. This last show proved this fact to me, and sadly, the show has lost some credibility to me. I know that Santino is going to make it to the final show based on ratings, regardless of consistent talent or how good the dresses work. Remember, its "Bravo, WATCH what happens"
sincity
The fact that Santino remains on this show continues to prove that this is less about fashion than it is about keeping a "personality" on the show. At least 2 or 3 times now the judges have flat out said Santino hasn't met the objectives of the challenge, hasn't designed for the person he was supposed to be designing for, etc. What a load of crap! If Santino were some meek and mild person he would have been gone by the second show. Emmett's design was boring, but Santino didn't design for the client so you keep Santino? Am I missing something or does anyone else agree with me?
jayfan
OMG Santino needs to go. What the heck was his. I thought for sure he was gone after the comments that were said. Come on get him off he is bad. But I guess he is good for ratings. Like Wendy last year. Cant wait to see Jay he is great. I think Santino is the only one I have ever seen them talk to about his MOUTH. I am tired of the I am great and yall just stink attitude. Hope he leaves next week.
lazylady
They had the perfect episode to get rid of the a**holic Santino and did not. This show is so very, very rigged. At least Emmet is trying something different, sure his outfit was bland but you know what, she could have at least skated in it!

She wouild fall on her ice carrying around all that garbage on the back end of Santino's.

I was not crazy about any of them really.

I think they are setting up Santino to win. And if they do I am all finished with Project Runway
pinksalute
My favorite tonight was Daniels. I loved the color and shape of his design.

I liked Zulemas but i have seen that design many times before when watching iceskating.
eastcoastgal527
I just finished watching "On Thin Ice" and thought finally they're going to get rid of that arrogant jerk, Santino. How many times have we heard the judges tell him his designs are horrible, and yet he stays because he is creative? Please, I think he stays merely because he is controversial. I think the producers have more pull on who stays than the judges and I'm tired of it. Santino doesn't ever think of the client and does whatever he wants. Emmet's design was far better than Santino's. All three judges said let's send him home. So, I ask, how the heck did he get to stay?
benSolomon
Is there any purpose whatsoever to having challenges if the results are just going to be ignored? Clearly Santino's design was absurd and utterly unwearable. This is the first time I actually thought I could do a better design than one of the contestants. Interesting or not, Emmett at least designed a wearable garment.

Why don't they just say that Santino is going to be in the final three and he can skip straight to being the Rob Plotkin of this season until then -- help the others sew and stop wasting our time.

Also, the manipulation with using the editing on the judges' comments is a little heavy-handed. As someone else said, as soon as Heidi said she could say auf viedersein (sic?) to Santino, I knew he was staying.

Ptui on this episode.
JohnStacy
To the throat! What a total jerk, fool, a$$, etc. Emmit's work was classy and would have worked. He should not be faulted for the shortness.

Santino's looked liked he described it himself... A baboon's a$$. The producers of PR simply like the controversy. I would love to see someone run Santino over repeatedly with a car!

I know!!!!! He likes feathers and glueing $hit on so much, let's tar and feather him before we toss his a$$ in the river!
peggyau7
I agree with you totally. If we mere mortals see it, why can't the great Michael Korrs and Nina Garcia see it.
marxsis3
Poor Emmett, I think Satino should have gotten the boot!!

I for one, could not agree with you more. This program is a rigged sham. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you Bravo. I'm done watching this horsesh*t. AMERICAN IDOL has started again, and I am Soooooo switching to it. It may be the cheesiest thing on TV, but at least it's not totally fixed like Project Runway.

I think every one of the producers should be lined up, and force-fed that hideous rag designed by Santi. It would be absolute justice for the abominable crap they've just forced their audience to swallow.

And I really wish the remaining contestants would each slap the snot out of that b*tc* Zulema for what she's going to do with the models next week. Of course I'll never know, cause I WILL NOT watch this freak show again. I am OUT OF HERE!!!!

JustJak
Sandi929
Zulema's design deserved to win, it was beautiful.

I was dissappointed that Santino is still there given his design was not "wearable" for an ice skater. If the challenge was to design an ice skating outfit for someone who has to meet certain criteria with their clothing. (Katrina Witt was told to change or be eliminated from the Olympics one year because her dress did not meet the criteria), then that factor alone should have been enough to boot him - I mean everyone else made a point of keeping to the guidelines, which in some ways restricts what can be done. I won't even mention it was mostly butt-ugly with all that "stuff" added.

While Emmett's was boring, it at least met the requirements it was suppose to.

It feels like the judges/producers use a floating set of rules to judge.
jayfan
I agree with you 100% How much longer does he stay. He is bad and I mean BAd in the worst way. His Mouth is just well lets say gets him in trouble. He needs to think about the client not his way. I want what I want not what he wants. I would never have him do anything for me because I would not get what I asked for. She is a skater and small and the ourfit needs to fit into that world. His was to much junk in the trunk.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*sobs*

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

My poor poor Emmett is out...I am sorry but while his dress was old and traditinal...at least it could be worn on the skating rink...Santino should of been out cause his couldn't of even been worn...Besides through all project runway history there have been several designs that made it that weren't too inspired..

And whats worse (besides the Lingerie thing) Emmett has never been on the chopping block...and Santino missed the bullet THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW...I really wish Heidi would of gotten rid of him like she said she wanted to. (which makes me believe EVIL PRODUCERS are being bad)

I am actually happy Zulema won so she could do her walk off...and hopefully because of this someone will take Emmett's old model Shannon...because Shannon is a model I LOVE. (and of course everyone knows I love Grace and Rebbeca) (and still miss Claudia).

but once again...

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they were going to get rid of my Emmett...if they could of just gotten rid of Santino first I would of been happy.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Now about the designers in the skate outfits...I thought Emmett was HOT...I noticed he had a belly but I am turned on by bellys(I know I am weird[and even weirder because I have walked runways before and am very thin]And I only like a belly on my guys not my girls) but I was like IN HEAVEN...I also liked Chloe in her outfit can you say OW OW.
Greytone
Challenge after challenge reveals the sewing ability of each designer. It was inevitable that Emmett would be leaving sooner than head-strong Santino because his designs had to stay 'safe' due to his limited construction capability.

I am enjoying seeing the technique used by Chloe during the construction of her garments. She uses a lot of black tape on the mannequin, and based on what we saw of her tape placement on it in one scene, we could readily foresee the direction of her design. She truly knows what she is doing, and the finish on each of the ruffles she cut was perfectly accomplished.

Nick's design was my favorite. I feel his use of color was a surprise, and the design was unique and not something I have seen on the ice before. It fell so beautifully, you could see his skill level in its construction.

Andrae seems to be the savior of the designer group as he took it upon himself to fix and/or repair the overlock. It was surprising to me that they all were stumped by the breaking of a needle. I have broken only one needle, and if you have a spare and any knowledge of your machine, it is quickly replaced. If the needle broke, it actually means that you are pulling the fabric in some way and distorting the position of the needle, so I do point as Kara being the problem in that circumstance.

I haven't posted much this season, but I sure an interested in seeing if the final winning Project Runway designer will be someone who is a expert hands-on seamstress/tailor, or one with a vision and access to expert seamtresses to implement his/her designs. What do you think?
peggyau7
Yep, hoochie was the word I was looking for. Thank You. Apparently Miss Z causes a real stir next week with the models. She needs to go!
mariophila
AHHHHHH!!!! What the hell is this crud...just finished watching episode 7 and really annoyed. I'm sorry, I know Santino is a probably a better designer than Emmett and has all that vision blah blah blah...but this is the THIRD runway he completely missed the mark, failed miserably and deserved to get his butt booted off. HIS DRESS WAS HIDEOUS!!!!BEYOND WORDS!!!! Nothing was impressive about it at all, it didn't even look like a nice Halloween costume...Emmett is probabl technically the lesser designer but come on, his dress was WAY nicer than Santino's...now I know all these judgings are based on ratings and not aesthetic value...I expected Emmett to go this week but never expected Santino's work to look sooooo BAD...REALLY REALLY BAD!!!! This ranks with the Marla/Guadalupe and Scarlet/Wendy judgings ... yuck...

I'm happy for Zulema though, her skate dress was really pretty...but what the hell was Andre thinking...his dress scared the hell out of me (good dress but NOT for figure skating)
Designer36
As an aspiring fashion designer who has already been accepted to FIDM (same place Nick, Santino, Gaudalupe, and Raymundo attended) I honestly don't think Santino is a bad Designer. Though I believd Daniel should of won. I loved the color as well as the Style. I liked Vhloe's and I love the color but she is obssesed with teal. Its my favorite color but she did well in the end. Santino's was.... different. I thought he was arrogant this epidsode and he knew he was going to be on the chopping block. Emmit needed to go, he's a menswear designer. Im shocked Zulema won, but oh well. Its the client that counts.

Most of all i do beleive Santino has great talent and skill and a creative ambition. Though I may be only a senior in high school and not have as much expeirence as these judges, i honestly think Santino deserved to stay. He just needs to harness his creativity and focus his skills on the challenge.
jmj424
The outfit that santino came up with was just gross. What was he thinking?
Emmetts was kind of boring but at least it would not have looked stupid on a figure skater. It would have been wearable.
I liked the one that chloe came up with. It was wearable and different.
Chicagolawyer
I am mortified by this week's episode. I will seriously reconsider whether I want to continue watching this show. I am appalled that Santino was allowed to stay. His dress wasn't just overdesigned or "too creative" - it was out-and-out hideous. It looked sloppy, unfinished, and even made his model look fat. I have to wonder why the judges keep making excuses for him and being over-indulgent of him. He is disrespectful of others, has zero ability to design tasteful or classy garments (sorry, but the fact that he got the approval of a Hilton sister certainly does not equal "class"), and he should have been out the last two weeks in a row, and in the underwear challenge. Each time, his design was by far the worst, yet he was allowed to stay while other designers whose designs are much more aesthetically pleasing (and wearable - who would ever wear one of Santino's designs?) are kicked off. There is no excuse for refusing to run the competition based on merit. If he is still on after next week's episode, I will no longer be a viewer of Project Runway. His continued presence is an outrage and a disgrace to Bravo, the producers of Project Runway, and to the other designers.
mother03
I think that Santino should have been the one to go. This was Emmets only design that went bad. My god, Santino almost got elminated last week. When are they going to get rid of him. I'm upset because Emmet is such a good designer and I don't feel that it should have been him. I know his design was boring but up till now he has been so wonderful. I think that they got it wrong. I also liked Choles outfit much better than Zulema's.

I really liked Andrae's but was wondering how functional it would be. Chloe's and Zulema's seemed to be interesting AND functional.

Show is becoming a joke, has utterly discredited itself tonight. Very frustrating really because the reason I started watching it last season was that it had a little more credibility than other "reality" shows. It's an outrage that Santino continues to design flagrant nonsense, ignore the parameters of the challenge, bless out the judges, and be rewarded for it. If Kara, Zulema or any of the unpopular designers had put out that unwearable unbearable foolishness they'd have been out immediately. Utterly unwearable. Utterly ridiculous. Utterly unresponsive to the challenge. Couldn't be used for ice skating. Client a laughingstock. Santino, arrogant untalented braggart, still reigning. Yikes I hate injustice.

Speaking of which. Zulema's was beautiful, elegant and tasteful, not even slightly hoochie. Curb your bigotries.
danaje9303
Please take me out of my misery. I dont think I can stand another week of watching Santino make those hideous outfits....No matter what he makes he always seems to make an outfit that looks like someones gotten into a fight with tooooooooooo much material.......or better yet just bought all the material & trimmings the store had to offer.......HELP....someone call the FASHION POLICE!
maruchan
Everytime I watch this show I become more enraged. Do the producers really think we're idiots? Santino is a plant plain and simple. Just like wendy was last years plant. I agree Emmitts design was boring but it was not vulgar. That judge whatever her name was is a complete idiot. I thought Zulema's was vulgar showing her navel. I'm not sure I'll watch the show anymore, except to see Jay kick some Santino A$%$!!!!! The remaining combatants are the most boring people I've ever seen on television. I hope the ratings suffer for treating us like fools!!
indy
After being a viewer since the start of this season I have to agree 100% also. What is the deal that Santino gets talk to the judges the way he does, doesn't like really anyone else, thinks he is the BEST of everything, and yet he stays?? It always comes down to him and another, and again he "back talks" the judges and the other person is the loser. Make someone wonder how much of this show is real and how much is "fixed".. Guess we'll see next week?
Meggo
Wow,I cannot believe Santino is still on, his outfit was hideous, almost as bad as the lingerie, I do not see this creativity people refer to him as having, all his designs are very similar, overembellished and mostly ugly, he never designs to fit the challenge or the client and should have gone home twice, it makes me angry that he stayed again, when Emmett's design wasn't all that bad. Also, what was vulgar about it? If anyone's was vulgar or showed too much it was Zulema's, which was nice but would have been nicer if she covered the top better. I really liked Chloe's and Nick's designs and Emmett's. I wish they would send Santino home where he belongs and stop keeping him just for the ratings. I am very tempted not to watch anymore because of that but I really enjoy the show besides Santino. It's not fair for other good, deserving designers to lose out because Santino is a jerk.
aajay
I'm really fed up with the games being played on these "contest" shows. Keeping that maniac Santino after all the ridiculous outfits he has designed is disgusting. No one in their right mind (exception Nicky Hilton) would get anywhere near any of them. Maybe few skaters would wear Emmets but NO ONE would wear Santinos. (and Daniel B didn't deserve to lose the lingerie contest). We all know that Santino won't be allowed to win like, Wendy or Jim (Martha) but is kept on just for the ratings: He is good copy. However, he also is using the show for PR, etc. and winning is not his goal. Oh well, after all, they deserve each other.
mariophila
At least Santino grew up a little and didn't act like a damn fool on the runway...but I think humility in the realization that all your "dress" is good for is wiping windows or picking up dog poo will do that to you...I'm betting he goes next week...I really don't think the producers are going to stoop to keeping him on for ratings anymore especially that the drama seems to be dying out...really hope Tim Gunn rips him a new one next week like the preview suggested!!!
jodiefrodie
Right, so it looks like most people don't like Santino...I have to diagree. I think Santino is GREAT. Sure, he is a little out there, but he has passion, creativity, and IDEAS!!! No doubt his creations are a little over the top, but honestly, when one sees runway shoes on TV, aren't most of the clothes over the top, and realistically unwearable?!?!? I HEART SANTINO!!!!!
