You're sweet to offer your help and it is much appreciated! Wannabefab (where are you girl?) who lives here in Buffalo offered alot of help too along with a host of others who have experienced homeschooling. With such an outpouring, I can think nothing but good thoughts about it

A few years back I had a Brother's antique cast iron typewriter. That puppy was heavy! It was in perfect working order too. I ended up giving it to the husband of my landlady because he was an aspiring writer (of horror which I love) and he wanted a typewriter.
You know, that made me remember that we used to have one of those too - I don't know if it was a Brother, but it was this HUGE HEAVY thing that seemed to be made out of cast iron. It was my husband's, and when we met he actually typed with it all the time (must be an aspiring writer thing - I sure prefer a computer, though). I wonder what in the world happened to that thing??? It's probably worth a fortune now. It may have been worth a fortune even then, he was still using it 10 or 12 years ago.

I remember my cousins having milk delivered to their house - and this was in a Richmond VA suburb in the 70s, even. We were WAY more remote and didn't have milk delivery. Well, we actually were so remote that we had a cow, so I guess we really didn't need delivery.

had to wear dresses to school
My mother didn't let me wear pants until I was in third grade. My best friend's mother didn't let her either, and every day we'd count all the girls who wore pants and go home and report the tallies to our mothers. Finally got to wear pants when it snowed and we still had to go to school. It was so exciting that I still remember what they looked like - they were aqua blue levis. When the pants ban lifted I don't think I wore a dress again until I was a senior in high school.

Childhood Memories, huh?
Can you top these....
.....Seeing "Fantasia" in its FIRST release and screaming my head off when the wicked witch pushed rocks over the cliff during the "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence.
.....Standing in line with my mom, when she went to get our family's food ration books. War time, ya know!
....."Liberty" stamps were sold at school for 10 cents each. When you had pasted a whole book full of them you traded it in and were given a War Bond worth $25 at maturity.
.....The butcher at your local meat market would give you 2 cents for every pound of used kitchen grease you brought in a used coffee can...that is if you had the ration stamps to buy coffee in the first place.
.....and speaking of cans, the trashmen picked them up separately. They told us they could make shell casings to make the war over sooner.
.....And then the post war rush to make up for lost time! I remember the only place you could watch television was in the barroom on my paper route or in the front window of the electrical store with a loudspeaker out front.
.....and the TV sets had big, bubble magnifying glasses in front of them to make the picture bigger.

Hey kids -
I'm finally here!
As I e-mailed De this morning, I promise I'm okay. Wichita actually didn't get hit with any of the tornadoes, just a lot of icky heavy rain for awhile.
I've been really busy, trying to find a job & all that (still unemployed....*grrr*), but I just have to say - I've missed y'all SO much over these past...I don't even know how long.
So as a very brief update about everything (& if there's important stuff that I miss, forgive me - it took me forever & a day to read through the posts I missed & I haven't even gotten to the other threads yet :
TTB: I'm glad to hear that Papi's surgery went well & I hope his recupperation is going well, too.
There seems to be a lot of cases of lazy school districts lately...much props for getting in their faces & making them do their job right. I'm confident your daughter did her best, & I hope she passed just as another jab at the district. I'm sure her homeschooling will be wonderful - send her my love & blessings.
MGK: I loved your virtual make-better (yeah...it's really been that long since I've been around). Very good & those scenes...*whew* I musy say, I think you made my monitor fog up a bit
Not: I'm thinking you explained your absence, but my mind's going completely blank, so whatever the reason, I hope things are all good & well with you.
I have to say, I thought HP&POA was AMAZING!! A little upset Cuarano (sp?) cut out most of the Quidditch, particularly where Malfoy, Goyle, & Crabbe pretend to be a dementor & Harry knocks them on their ass w/ an expecto patronum, but other than that, I was very satisfied.
The dementors were creepy - well done, but creepy. The hippogriff: absolutely stunning - one of the best CGIs I've ever seen.
Gary Oldman did a fantastic job & Rupert, Emma, & Daniel have really matured & are becoming wonderful actors - can't wait until GOF .
Star: Thanks for the concern & I empathize with your laments about the Beckhams; it's the exact same way w/ J. Lo over here.
To all the kids who felt like shut-ins: I know this issue has been resolved, but I just want to say that we don't mean to ignore or forsake ANYONE & you've just got to understand w/ all the names flying around, it's hard to keep track. I kind of felt that way when I first started posting, but...you just have to stick around, show your personality, & not take it so personally.
Again, thanks to everyone for all their concern & I promise to make a more conscious effort to stay more updated, b/c...I just love y'all so much!!

Ah ah-ah,

I woke up this morning,
The sunshine was shining
I put on my happy face
I'm living, I'm able,
I'm breathing, I'm grateful
To put on my happy face
Woke up and realised
This world's not so bad after all
Looked at it through a child's eyes, and
I saw these beautiful
Things that you never think about
Like the ocean, moonlight, stars and clouds
It's amazing how we don't
Appreciate our blessings
There's plenty of people who don't like me
But since there are more who love me
and I love myself
Sometimes, it gets tough,
It gets tough
But I can't give up,
Can't give up
Just take a deep breath,
Close my eyes
Feel the love and
Give a smile
I woke up this morning,
The sunshine was shining
I put on my happy face
I'm living, I'm able,
I'm breathing, I'm grateful
To put on my happy face
I woke up this morning,
The sunshine was shining
I put on my happy face
I'm living, I'm able,
I'm breathing, I'm grateful
To put on my happy face
It's me,
I just wanna be happy
Uh, just be happy, uh,
Just be happy

I will put all the past behind me,
No more enemies

That's a shame. Different strokes for different folks. I found it hard to watch because they aired so much of their dirty laundry on that show. TMI, IMO. I don't care for Showbiz Moms and Dads, either, because it reminds me of Jean-Benet(sp?) Ramsey. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. When I was in elementary school, my mother bought mostly pants for me and unisex toys. I wanted to be girly at that time, so it confused me about my identity. My tomboy phase came when I was in my teens. Now, as an adult, I try to make up for lost time by wearing mostly skirts (okay, they hide the thighs, too), lots of pink, long hair and makeup.

All the running around and interviewing, ugh! Getting a job can seem like a job in itself! The economy's been crappy since 9/11, maybe even sometime before that. According to recent news, hiring has come back up in the past few months. Good luck and lots of patience.

Jai's Mom is a born again Christian, I believe Carson was raised that way too.

well, I've watched a couple of episodes of Moms and Dads. I think Bravo did a good job of finding a wide spectrum of families. Yes, there is the sad little blonde girl, but there's also some success stories. There's the single mother and her talented little girl, who is very well-grounded and levelheaded about it all. A couple of other families seemed to have a positive experience with the show... if not the parents, then the kids. The show is tough to take, and I find myself with my jaw agape more than once as I watch, but if nothing else, it's making the public aware of what goes on behind the scenes.

Gary--I am new to the boards, and I found your comment interesting-the part about how the Fab Five honoring heterosexual relationships. On the one hand, I'm glad you learned something about gays, and on the other, I get the sense you have some reservations about gay people, in general. Maybe that's too heavy a comment for a fan-board, but it made me think. I don't understand the discomfort of many straights, esp. conservative Christians, with people who happen to be gay.
I grew up in homophobic, conservative environment, and it was extremely painful to be different (knew I was gay from the get go), and have my parents and family and their social group HATE gays, not dislike, not just be uncomfortable, but HATE gay people to the point of saying we should all be rounded up and executed. That shot what little self-esteem I had all to you know what, and made me very fearful of people, and terrified of what my parents would think if they knew. I was right to be afraid of the latter.
I'll leave it at that, but your words were very interesting.
Peace and love, Rjaye.

My mother used to make the most incredible rhubarb pie - and she wouldn't tell us what it was until after we ate it, knowing how we'd react. I'll try to find it next time I'm home.

'I just wanted to thank you guys for being there. My husband and I watch your show whenever we can. But I must say you have really helped my guy out! John is a dentist. He will be 41 on May 17...
'He hadn't been taking too much pride in his appearance, until after watching a few episodes of Queer Eye all of a sudden I noticed some of my facial products disappearing...I found out much to my surprise it was John, my husband of almost 18 yrs. I was shocked!...Over the period of a few months I noticed small changes...I'm waking to the sound of our treadmill going...
'Here is the kicker...We have an event in mid May...after a little coaxing he went to the mall. Not only did he get a beautiful Italian suit, he purchased a sport jacket, 2 silk mock turtle neck sweaters, 2 new ties, a tie chain, 7 new wonderfully tailored shirts various colors, 2 pair of pants, 2 belts, 2 silk suspenders, and a new pair of Italian made shoes...
'Oh My God!!! It was expensive but worth it...his self-confidence...(has gone)...through the roof. Our kids were like hey we have a new daddy...What a difference!
Thank you!'

Oh, M'Gawd!
Growing up in a family of two adults and four children, it seemed that a week never went by that one of us didn't have an appointment with the family dentist, Dr. Johnson. My father used to joke that he had, single-handedly, paid for the dentist's three childrens' college expenses.
"Snaps" to Dr. John in his new-found sartorial splendor! His next job is to find another guy, like my father, to pay for his childrens' education.
With good cheer to all!

luvisthom: For a person of your good taste and sensibility, I'm sure I can create a role or job for you. I'm going to be doing double duty as head screenwriter (pun intended), and wardrobe mistress. Although, I can hear it now...
Thom: Are you sure this outfit is appropriate for every scene? It seems a little revealing!

I don't think these people should be called "conservative" christians - they should be called "extreme" christians...better yet, leave out "christians". Christians don't wish death on anyone. One of the ten commandments is "thou shalt not kill". Well if they are saying to kill, then they are not following christian law now are they. This is guaranteed to piss them off, but I'm not one to care so you can tell them I said it - lol

Echoes of Hitler and Nazi Germany in the 21st century!
Those of us who call ourselves Christian are told to "...love your neighbor as yourself" and "...even as you have not done it unto them, you have not done it unto me..."
As Americans, together with most of the civilized world, we fought a war that sacrificed the lives of millions of our youngest and finest to eradicate a regime based on hate and prejudice.
Sometimes I feel deep shame for some of my brothers and sisters.

Change the word from "gays" to "strangers", and you might have an easier time understanding. All of us have reservations about people, places and things we don't have experience with. ...But for me, as a Christian, we are called to walk in love with all men, as Christ did. Quote:
I don't understand the discomfort of many straights, esp. conservative Christians, with people who happen to be gay.
Make sure you keep those as two separate words. "Conservative" and "Christian". One is a POLITICAL agenda, the other is a spiritual identity.Quote:

I grew up in similar areas. I won't repeat what I wrote ages ago... if you even remotely care to find my feelings on this subject - it's Comments thread page 137, I think... bottom of the page... or closely thereafter. I grieve for your fear and your painful experiences. Please just remember - hatred is an equal opportunity employer. strawberry rhubarb pie, w/ orange zest & a fine tapioca-thickened filling. mmmmm. this about.com recipe is identical to the houston chronicle one i've been using for several years:
http://southernfood.about.com/library/rec0...03/bl30427y.htm
can also make it as strawberry peach pie, by obvious means. peach season ... it's virtually here, and many, many people have issues with the rhubarb.

We get BBC America with our satellite dish. Before we got the dish, the only British programs we got were on PBS, which is a public broadcasting channel here - viewer sponsored and without commercials. PBS is great, though - ours in NC shows a lot of British stuff. I got hooked on Monty Python when I was so young my bedtime was an issue, thanks to PBS. They've also showed Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Ballykissangel - all sorts of great stuff. But I LOVE BBC America. Well, other than the fact that they cut out bits of the programs to make room for commercials.
I do like Trinny and Susannah, although they are NO Carsons. They pale beside him.
