Way back in my callow youth, when margarine was first introduced, the 'dairy lobby,' both nationally and locally, influenced legislation prohibiting labeling any substitute for real butter as anything other than "oleo," or "oleo-margarine," and it couldn't be sold in quarter pound sticks like butter.

Ohio was especially 'pickey.' It couldn't even have a buttery color. It came, snow white -- a one pound blob in a pliable plastic pouch with a capsule inside of buttery colored dye that you pinched and then kneaded until the blob attained the proper color. As a little kid, it was my job to do the kneading. I hated it! My fingers would cramp up before the process was complete.

....so sez SA, shuddering at the memory but just thankful that hand-churning real butter was a thing of the past!

Oh, my mother has told me about the Oleo Days, when they had to stir up the coloring into the Oleo! How bizarre. And we used to actually get fresh churned butter from somebody, although now I don't remember who. I just remember that I thought it was HORRIBLE. I liked store butter.

You know, I've suddenly had a memory flash of my mother pressing butter in one of those wooden butter-presser-things, but I know she didn't churn it with a hand churn. Maybe we had an electric one?? How odd.

I have heard stories of my father's sister having to churn butter with a hand-churn. She loved to read and her mother would listen for the churn-thunking to get slower and slower as she got immersed in her book, and then go yell at her to pay attention to what she was doing.

Oh my goodness! I don't know how I got here but--OLEO! My mother, bless her just-87 year old heart still calls margarine oleo in restaurants or wherever. I thought it came from WWII. Her other favorite is ice box. And it ain't cause she is senile, she's always used those two terms.
White bread with oleo and sugar--yes that was junk food when I was young.
Aren't you glad someone FINALLY admitted to eating chocolate chip cookie dough and put it into ice cream? I spent the first 30 years of my adult life secretly baking a double or triple batch of chocolate chip cookies so that I could eat at least half the dough. And HA to those who warn about raw eggs--they never hurt me, yet.
Glad I found this thread.

hey, who was ur first favourite? mine was kyan.. then Carson 'hits' me with his wittiness. then, Thom's gorgeousness mesmerised me! hehehe... but i'm still holding on to my carson... hehehe... he's the best..

Actually, I fell first for Thom's DESIGNS ...THAT's what made me come back. THEN I got hooked when he threw all of Alan C.'s furniture out of the house... (Odd, since that's the only epi I will watch, but not tape.) THEN I had a dream where I was having a long conversation with Kyan - and didn't recognise WHO he was until I saw the show again - after that I was hooked on the show, lock stock and barrel. I briefly liked Ky, then Thom, then Carson-Ted-and Jai all rolled up together! I'm hopelessly locked as a fan of all 5 guys.

...Still waiting on that e-mail hon! Peace!

Thanks for posting this! I'd read about Carson being on a show airing on that weird farm channel that's way up in the 9000s with the alternate universe adult education public access stuff, but all I knew was it was at 4:30 today and I wasn't positive that was even in my time zone, so this was very helpful!

And now I see that weird farm channel shows scads of horse programs, so I'm going to have to start tuning in more - as a lifelong horse fanatic, I LOVE stuff like that. I'd watch the shetland ponies program even without my hero Carson on it.

My mother uses those same terms. Not surprisingly, she's 84. Yeah, and I never really bought into the whole raw egg thing--well, at least where cookie dough is concerned. Just as there is magic in the Corningwear that prevents it from breaking (unless, as Carson and Thom found out, when two plates collide and all the magic falls out), I believe that there is magic in cookie dough that protects people from the raw eggs. Yep, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

From the Boston Herald 8/40/04

INSIDE TRACK; 'Queer Eye' sequel to focus on Straight Girls? Bravo!

Why should guys be the only ones to get a good tszujing? Boston- based Scout Productions began filming in La-La last week on "Queer Eye for the Straight Girl" the sequel to their hit show for helpless Straight Guys. "We fought doing it for a year now," said Michael Williams, who, with his partner David Collins, created "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy," Bravo's marvy makeover sensation. "But we finally gave in."

Whilst Williams made the rounds at last week's Democratic National Convention, Collins was on the Left Coast cruising through Victoria's Secret with the show's first victim, er, Straight Gal.

But, fear not, the 24-year-old schoolteacher featured in the show's first episode is NOT being redone by a gang of lipstick lesbians. She's getting the overhaul courtesy of three gay men - a Fab Three, if you will.

"It took us forever to cast the parts but I think they're every bit as good as the original Fab Five," Williams said.

Why only three, though?

"With guys, they don't even know how to wash their face," he said. "Women need far less help. So we have one guy to do hair, clothes, makeup; another to do lifestyle; and a third to work on the house. We call them The Look, The Life, The Locale."

One day, I sat down to dinner at one of my many (13) aunts' homes salivating with anticipation as I plunked a boiled potato onto my plate. I liberally slathered that firm, big white chunk of heaven with butter (okay, margerine) and carefully sprinkled a little salt on for jzuj. I picked up my fork, took a piece and euforically placed it into my expectant mouth only to get the shock of my life! My potato was spoiled! I quickly spat it out and told my aunt. She took a piece, tasted it, and pronounced it okay. She also pronounced it...a turnip! I have hated turnips ever since!

Sweetheart, you're talking about an industry that labels African-American Christian music as Gospel and White-American Christian music as Christian. And, you're talking about a society that labels products for non-Whites as "ethnic" as though White people are not also an ethnic group! If this world wasn't so sad, it'd be comical!

WELL, I was glad I got to see it, Carson aside. It was quite interesting, and I learned all sorts of things about Shetland ponies that I didn't know. Carson was mostly talking from a script about the ponies and their history and care, etc. It was really a program to get people interested in the ponies. Worked for me - now I want one. They are SO CUTE. And I think I could keep one in the spare room and it would be quite happy. The cats would love it.

Anyway, Carson did an excellent job and obviously knew what he was talking about, despite it being a scripted show. Which he deviated from a few times - early on he was standing with this really cute pony that got increasingly more restless as the show went on - it would bump him with its head and then started jerking around trying to get loose. He seemed about to laugh a few times, and at one point, after talking about how the ponies were from Scotland and were used to haul coal in mines at one time, he looked at it and said, "Doesn't sound like much fun, does it? You are SO getting deported if you don't straighten up!"

The bad thing was that it was obviously a low-budget production, and between the little informative segments with Carson talking about the ponies, they would do these kind of photo-film-montage things with scenes of ponies and people showing them etc, which was fine the first time but they did it every couple of minutes and it lasted FOREVER and had the most awful distracting perky loud music - they kept showing the same scenes, too, so after a point we just started fastforwarding to watch Carson's bits. It was a half hour show but honestly felt like it lasted three hours with all that filler stuff.

Still, I'll bet it will accomplish its purpose, which was to get people interested in Shetland ponies. And I'm really impressed that Carson did that for them, this weird little show that is on some alien public access channel with a small viewership.

Yup, this is an early post by ticktick that only begins to illustrate (tick illustrates in words) why I'm still hoping he'll come back to post here. It came just a few days after ThomsTeddyBear's Thom post!
Anything I think I understand about Carson/ticktick I have found through these posts. Twinned souls! Wow! I don't think I have a twinned soul. At least I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But it is ironic that ticktick found his on the opposite end of the world via internet!

Now this transcends romance!

It seems like a Billion years ago I, or SOMEONE posted about the Xerox and Entrepreneur Magazine Contest to have Thom make over your office.

Here we go:
Dolores Tropiano
The Arizona Republic
July 25, 2004

Designer Thom Filicia, star of the hit TV show QEFTSG, picked up an outdated laser printer from Mad Science of Scottsdale's office on Saturday. He and business owner, Jack Hamlett did a "One, two, three..." before crashing it against the concrete sidewalk.

The action was a symbolic kickoff to a $125,000 office makeover the Scottsdale business won from Entreprenuer Magazine and Xerox Corp., which will transform the technology in the office.

Filicia, of Thom Filicia Inc., came in from New York, to work the aesthetics of the office.

"If you've ever been in here, you'd know why these guys are winners," Filicia said, referring to the company. "Their office is very tragic."

The Mad Science Office, described as a science experiment gon awry, was chosen from more than 450 entries for the honor of being the most obsolete headquarters in the country.

The transformation will take place over the next two weeks, with new equipment including a network color printer, a desktop printer/scanner/fax machine, and software.

Most of the technological changes will cost less than $5,000.00, illustrating the fact that many new small businesses can make changes without going broke.

On Saturday, with an amused crowd in tow, Filicia strolled through what he described as three "very underdeveloped" rooms in the business, examining the state of affairs.

The first room had a shelf filled with chemicals next to a refrigerator and microwave. Marketing materials were scattered throughout, and an old fax machine was sitting on a table.

"Oh my goodness, it's fabulous!" Filicia joked, "I think it's perfect. A little throw rug and we're all done!"

You're very welcome! Carson and my interest in horses aside, it was worth it just to see this bizarre television channel. When I set the VCR it was showing something like Big Joes House O' Polka. Later that night we turned the TV on and it was still set on RFDTV - we couldn't switch it, the programs were so weird. They appeared to be programs from the late 60s or early 70s, these peculiar somewhat disturbing musical groups that were playing from people's livingrooms and wearing glitter and beehive hairdos - but the guide thing said they were from 2004. It was really really REALLY strange. I could never do the bizarreness justice.

*done in best hillbilly voice*

Now Jai he is the youngun'
just like 'is many fans
ya can hear 'em scream 'is name out
across the many lands
They're Angels and their Mimis
and long to be by his side
he appreciates the 'tention
but 'e wants a groom, not bride

*banjo pickin' solo*

He's running down the sidewalk
the girls are close behind
for an actor and a singer
ya'd think he didn' mind
But it makes it kinda hard, now
when he's tryin' to make a date
that's why he bought a wig and dress
and dresses up as Kate

*end banjo strum*

YEE HA!

I love this song!! So, did you make it up yourself or did you have help? Did you make it up on the spot or did it take you a while???

I was thinking the other day about how (i think it was tomasulo)one of the fab 5 fans got a braclet to thom and he wore it and how a person from the forum talked to ted, has anyone else had an encounter with a fab 5 member??

Interesting to hear about it if you want to fess up and give us all the gossip!! And if you have seen or talked to one or all of them.....what are they like?

Are they like most other celebrities and are kind and sweet in front of the camera and nasty to fans off the camera

OR

I heared a story about Kyan telling some papparatzi where to go.....and there has been stories going around about Carson and Ted not getting along......

I just ordered it from Amazon. You have to be kind of careful to get the right thing, though - they call the regular CD "enhanced", and the one that includes the DVD is "limited edition". It mentions the DVD way down under the Editorial Review thing - I nearly never figured it out. It's also the one that costs $23 instead of $13.

It has extra stuff that wasn't in the making of the video show that they had on Bravo - although I think there were things in THAT that aren't on the DVD. Anyhow, it was well worth the effort of figuring it out.

Not being a dance-club-music fan myself, I was quite pleased to find that Thom's taste in music runs towards the Grateful Dead and Neil Young and the Stones. They kind of had to drag it out of him, which was funny.

Funny! Yeah, I can see why it cost ten dollars more. I hope I can get it!

Carson was a member of the 1999 Invitational United States Saddleseat World Cup, Five-Gaited Equitation Team to South Africa.
It is very important to note the word "Invitational."
Also the word "Saddleseat."
Don't confuse the equestrian codes. Saddleseat is not an Olympic discipline. It is an important distinction. The horse world is almost as haughty as the fashion world.
I got the vibe that this particular canvas had been painted a little too "broadly" by Carson for some tastes in the "green shavings" world.
It was spelled out to me, emphatically, that competitors for the 1999 Invitational Team were NOT selected accordng to the selection processes of the governing body. Selection is at one-and-the-same-time a hair-raising competitive and eliminative process with almost incomprehensible criteria....well, I couldn't follow it.
It was like - You win this event or that event and you are on the team short-list or you get points towards being considered and then they have a "cold" ride-off against each other on unknown mounts, picked by lottery. Very complex.
To quote:A phone call came from Hennie Heyns, President of the South African Amateur Saddlehorse Union (SAASU). The question? Would the US send a team to "practice" against the South African national teams, both three- and five-gaited.
Mr. Heyns was informed that it was almost certain that the US Saddle Seat World Cup couldn't afford to field an official team in an "off-year", nor would there be sufficient time to stage a trials process.
The US could always send a non-official or invitational team, one where the riders paid their own way. Officials hurriedly began racking their brains to think of candidates.
They were told that the rules would not follow the guidelines of the Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup. There would be two competitions held back to back at two different shows in the Western Cape area. The South African riders would ride their own horses for half of each competition. Each South African rider had been asked to secure a second horse for the US Team to use on the first day of competition, then the teams would switch with the US Team riding the South African team's horses on the second day of each event. Scoring would be numerical, although the system to be used wasn't outlined, and the scores would accumulate over both competitions. In addition, there would be five judges at each event, all South African.
With these stipulations in mind, officials set about putting together "a team of good horsemen," as they called it. "We want to get a group of good riders, not necessarily equitation riders together for this. It was a little experiment."
Initial organizer and the coach, had to decline due to scheduling conflicts.
Many candidates were identified and invited. But the length of the trip, two weeks of competition with an optional third week aftertour, made it difficult for a number of candidates to sign on. When all was said and done, two unique teams were assembled. The three-gaited team would be comprised of Captain Stacey Kipper, along with Jennifer Green (who had served as the alternate on the 1996 US World Cup team), Toree Hefner, Christy O'Donnell (a 1990 US Team Captain) and Fatima Wazir. The five-gaited team consisted of Captain Vicki Gillenwater (a 1988 US Team member), along with Jonelle Chovanec, Carson Kressley, Chris Nalley and Ryan Stodd.--EndQuote
It seems to have been like this: "If you can get the days off and get to the airport with your gear - you are on the team."
Oh, and the South Africans won everything, but everyone had good competition and plenty of fun.
I never got around to obtaining permission from the author of the article to make these quotes - so, I am indebted to my souce, but I have left out some names of officials, as a precautionary measure - in case the grit hits the fan.

I found the site where HRH Tick obtained this information about Carson. The Equine events from Athens are scheduled to air on Bravo. I will be watching - both out of my love for horses, and knowing - somewhere both Tick and Carson are watching too... (Fan of our mesmeric-cutie Carson, AND HRH Tick... Sigh.)
Peace!

Thanks for all the interesting information De.
I appreciate Carson's style and Tick's writing, but the fashion and horse world do seem haughty and oftimes ridiculous. I enjoy that Carson doesn't seem intimidated by that aspect of either world or to fall into line with it, but at the same time can navigate those worlds with so much style and talent! And he brings fun to those venues and his charisma energizes others! It's a very American attitude that I think Tick admired as well..
But we'll never know exactly unless he returns to post. I have also found a post here and there on some marginal sites but nothing recent. I can only hope that his determination paid off and that he has no more motivation to post here because he is corresponding with Carson directly. I hope this for Carson's sake. I can't imagine there are too many guys who can understand such a combination of passions. I never said I did. I don't.
I think most would like Carson despite, not because of, and he deserves more.

I am really anxious for the new episode, and it doesn't come on for another 4 hours and 50 minutes, so I think I'll take what De said and write a haiku!

She saw Brad Carson
She asked others to reply
"That is wicked bad"

Okay, so I skipped some parts in the post, but it's hard to fit everything into a haiku. I mean, you can only have 17 syllables in all....oh, well. Maybe I'll try again later.

Hey! Only four hours and 44 more minutes!

I've debated for the past week on whether or not I should post this but since I'm going to send it off to Carson, I figured I'd share it with you. If anyone will understand, its you guys.

Last Tuesday, my state had a primary election for US senator. Now, normally, I'm very politically active and up on all the candidates. However, this year, since I've focused all my energy gunning for the big guy, I've neglected my state matters.

Anyway, I wake up Tuesday to hear we're having a primary election. I've never missed an election in the 22 years I've been voting and I wasn't about to start this year. So off to the voting booth my sister and I trudged.

Here comes the confession: I didn't really know any of the names on the democratic ticket. Remember, I've been really focused on a change in that big seat. I looked at the names, looked at my sister and shrugged. I could tell she was clueless too.

Then I saw the name: Brad Carson

I let out a small yelp and pointed to the name on my sister's ballot. She said "no way". I said I was. It was a sign.

To make an already long story less long, we both voted for Carson. And guess what? He won! And he won by a HUGE margin so apparently other democrats here thought he was the right guy for the job although probably for different reasons

So, I'm going to do my best to see that Carson goes to the US Senate come January!

Am I obsessed? Have I gone overboard?

CW

YYYAAAAAYYYY!!! It WAS a sign, it had to be! And the other democrats probably voted by the same sign! WTG CARSON!!

OK, I know I'm really late in replying to this, but I have to say basing your vote on someone's name is a really bad idea. Brad Carson is pretty right wing, and has been accused of being a homophobe. He very publicly supports the Defense of Marriage Act (the act that wants to stop gay people from ever being able to get married). Although he is a Democrat his voting record has been described as Republican in nature.
"U.S. Rep. Brad Carson, has voted with the Republicans on more issues than he has voted with the Democrats. He voted last week for the Federal Marriage Amendment. He brags about this, because there are so many conservative people in Oklahoma that he thinks he has a better chance to win if he votes like a Republican."

PLEASE don't vote for people like that. DOMA is evil!
