I was just perplexed by this episode... Leanne gets sent home? Dave's mac & cheese & very expensive mushroom with a side of not-lamb is a winner?
I hope Harold wins the whole thing. I think Leanne appeared to be the most skilled (socially & culinary) of the group. I'm very sad she was sent home.

Point of information: most of the quality restaurants in the Napa, Sonoma, and even Medicino serve entirely too much pasta and in every way, shape and form. It is the bulk of the menus. Keep in mind that they are there not for the food but to sell the wine, honey. So Dave's dish was right on the money. The chefs were the ones who selected his as the best dish...wonder why?

oh, you should have seen the little dust up in the paper a few weeks ago about corkage fees. Lots of restaurants whining about they have these carefully selected wine lists which people absolutely destroy by bringing their own wines.

OMG - i think they've put a spoiler in the credits!!! i noticed it on the encore presentation last night. there is only ONE person they show twice in the credits...and this person's image is super-imposed behind another's.... keep your eye at about 11 o'clock to see it! i actually went back to check my Tivo to see if other episodes' credits were the same and YES! see for yourself!! if it is true, then i know who the winner is!!
i guess show's do this all the time...like Amazing Race did i think even Survivor.

I know at the beginning credits, they show Tiffani as a background when they are showing Brian. Which I would suspect is a mistake. Although personally, I would love it if your theory were true, as Tiffani is my favorite. (Dont hate me now)

speaking of spoilers... I wish Bravo would stop showing previews for next weeks show durring the episode. Maybe they only do this durring the second or third viewing and I am being penalized for watching the show at 11:oo instead of 10:00. Also the shows have run over the hour so I ended up seeing Lee Annes goodbye speech before the 11:00 show began.

I'm really not suprised that Le Anne lost and went home on a creative exercise. Technichal skill she was the tops on the show, but I really didn't see any creativity in what she did. The episode where Miguel got booted off really proved that. Miguel offered a great dessert idea, which Le Anne immediately because she wanted to name the damn resteraunt first. Any idiot with no creativity will start with square 1 and work thier way. A real creative mind will do thing backwards and build a main course around thier original idea so that when you get to that dessert it really comes out as that big climax, rather than just some afterthought. Le Anne continued proving her lack of creativity with her, "lets just copy that Spanish fad" attitude. I really do think that functional/technical skill wise Le Anne was the top, but that does not by any means she is creative. Those are different abilities.
Doing too much in an attempt to be creative and elegant is a mistake that non-creative people make when they try to be. Dave on the other hand really deserved to win. Mac & cheese: the perfect compliment to $1000 a pound truffles and the best wine in the world. Now that takes a real creative mind to do something simple, but to pull it off in an elegant fashion. Dave really deserved to win, although I am so sick of his crying. Grow up!
I really wish Tiffany had gone home though. Her food is not nearly impressive enough to excuse her horrendous attitude. Colliflower paste? ewwwww, way to [censored] up my wine and truffles you idiot. Notice how much of a stuck up [expletive deleted] she is too? Way to backtalk to some of the best chefs in the country when the pointed out how bad of a choice she had made. I so wish that the guest judge hadn't picked her octopus in week 2 or she would've been booted way back then like she deserves.

I think what really makes the restaurants crazy is that they mark up the wines about 400 percent for a huge profit. Patrons can bring in the same wines at a quarter the cost, so the restaurants try to make up the loss with corkage fees or forbid customers bringing in their own bottles. It really has very little to do with how carefully the restaurants have chosen their wine lists; it's all about the money.
There's a nice article on this in this month's Washingtonian magazine.

Brand new to the boards. I just joined to concur with many of you out there that have said that they can't WAIT until Wednesday night! I told my husband that I get totally P.O. when the show is over and when the season is over, I will no doubt go postal. I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show.
I was unhappy about LeeAnn's depature. I think she is a class act. Maybe her and Harold will get married and move to Mexico?? Tif is a seriously talented chef but a seriously talented bi-atch, too. Love ya, Dave, you're a sweetheart, but I gotta hook my car up to Team Harold. GO HAROLD! I hope you puree the crap out of Tif!

I was sort of shocked to see Tiffany CRYING. She always seemed like the toughest of the bunch...

Completely agree with Serenity. When you watch the encore showing, unless you time it perfectly, the end result of the show will be ruined. That happened to me with the "Bye-bye Stephen" episode.

First post. I totally agree. I can't believe how much I like this show. As you can tell from my name, I'm not exactly a Top Chef!
Just a quick comment about the remaining chefs. I love Dave. I'm not sure why, but I can't help rooting for him. I also LOVE Harold. If Dave doesn't pull off an upset, I hope Harold wins. Tiffani? She's talented, but her attitude hasn't come across well on TV.
I was watching one of the older episodes, and I absolutely loved the moment when the chefs, back at their apartment, did their own blind taste test. Everyone participated, and they all seemed to be in good spirits. It's too bad we don't see more of this side of the contestants on the show.

As far as the corkage fees go, I don't get bringing your own wine unless you're one of those who saves certain wines for a special occasion.
Most wines at restaurants are under $50, unless you are at an expensive restaurant, in which case you are springing for the meals, so why not the wines they've selected?
Then again, I'm not a big wine drinker - only on special occasions, so I probably have a different perspective than others who drink wine with every meal.
If you're going to pay a corkage fee of >$25 I think you may as well just buy their wine.

Thanks for the link DMM. I don't know how I feel about that article by Lee Anne. I'm kinda taken back a little. She's totally different in the article than how she's protrayed on tv. She's so much more out spoken and I was surprised at the language she used. Don't get me wrong I can cuss like a drunken sailor but she just didn't seem to be like that. I liked her from the beginning and wanted her to win, but now I don't know how I feel. Even though I dispised Tiffani, I thought Lee Anne was kinda harsh when talking about her. Am I the only one who feels this way? I'm just kinda shocked at the *real* Lee Anne.

Mama,
Thanks for the link. I am sure that my wife will want to access the link as she is probably Lee Anne's biggest fan.
I was a little put off by the picture of the jerk with his tongue in her ear. Where were these pictures taken? At a singles club? I noted that Swtpeaches was a little shocked at the 4-letter language used. Not a good idea to post such on the internet. I do understand that profanity is part of how chefs communicate in their world. Do you remember the guest chef in the Hot Dog Cart challenge? ..."It's a F--king
Burrito. You just take the [censored]t and roll it up." This happened at the judges table. I believe Colicchio has been bleeped several times too. But again, Lee Anne was probably a bit tipsy when she typed these blogs and may wish later on that she left the profanity in the kitchen.

I never thought that I'd post on a board for a t.v. show (not since X-files has gone into syndication, that is ) but I've become pretty enamored with this show, which is strange since it's reality t.v.
I'm really not seeing where some of the personality debates are coming from, since this show is so obviously extensively edited. The only person on the show that really made my stomach drop was Ken, and he didn't stay too long anyway.
I don't really have an opinion on Tiffani -- it's so hard to actually judge any of the competitors since you don't see too much personal time. People can be completely different away from work, and I think that happens most obviously in the hospitality industry (does that sound too Stephen-ish? I hate to use that word, but it is what cooking is all about )
Anyway, reading through these posts, I thought I'd try to add some positive vibes since it seems like it can get a little ugly sometimes
Hate me all you want, but my favorites on this show have been Lee Anne and (gasp!) Stephen. The guy is so green he's practically sprouting leaves, and I think that alot of his attitude comes from trying to emulate chefs he may have worked under or pompous professors; I really don't get an evil sort of vibe from him at all -- I just think that he's attempting to gain success through an 'accomplished-chef attitude' -- there is alot of asshatery (geez, did I just type that?) present, but it seems very put-upon. For pete's sake Stephen, you don't seem like a terrible guy, stop acting like one!
I've encountered alot of arrogant people in the sciences (older grad students, professors only interested in the money received by overheading student research, etc.) so maybe I'm just slightly numb to that sort of thing, but I loved watching Stephen, and can only hope that he takes to heart the way in which he came across on the show to be a better person and entrepreneur. Not every asshat gets the chance to see how they really come across. . .
I think (and hope) that all of the chefs have successful careers down the road -- I can't imagine being subjected to a taped competition, they've all earned my respect. Except for Ken. Can't say much beyond that for him!
sorry for the length ~~~

Well, it is his web journal o.O Don't you think it should be all about him since it's meant to be an explaination of his feelings on the show? I think people are too hard on both Stephen and Tiffani. They're just trying to be Top Chef; like everyone else on the show.

Thank you for the link, Dylansmeanmamma!!!
To me, this blog is more endearing than any clip of videotape that survived the editors' scissors on this show. It seeemed Lee Anne conducted herself politely and professionally on the show (perhaps in part because she teaches at the French Culinary Institute and she realized her behavior would reflect her employer.)
Her blog, in contrast, was honest and real, not nearly so reserved.
I once heard that "Profanity is the product of an unrefined mind." At the very least, I think that swearing laced into everyday conversation is inappropriate, but I think that profanity serves a purpose. Profanity is best used to drive home a point when the statement calls for raised eyebrows or underlined print. In this case, I thought Lee Anne made her opinion clear.
The funniest part was when she quoted Tiffany, "I didn't come here to make friends." and replies 'Guess what [expletive deleted]????' [unspoken: YOU DIDN'T!!!]
Anyway, cheers to you, Lee Anne, if you ever read the boards, and thanks for the insight into the REALITY of "reality tv."

Actually I very much appreciate your honesty at your conflicted feelings about LeeAnn. There's a point I've trying to make all along and it's we see want we want to see thru the very distorted lense of television. LeeAnn's upset because she got played by Tiffani. She's also upset that she didn't get the editing she wanted. She says that she thinks they made Tiffani look much better than she really was but that knife cuts both ways. Maybe that editing made LeeAnn look much better and now thru her blog, you see her more as she sees herself, how she really might be. It's a game show produced for maximum viewer entertainment and she did not win or frankly lose since she says she learned alot and gained some friends. I respect her choices.

I'm sorry things got so out of hand last night, Peaches. Things had been so angry seeming here the last few days, and last night we got way too silly as a stress reliever, and may have crossed a few boundaries into an R rating, or at least a solid NC17.

Damnation! I read all three blogs this morning, and almost copied it over to reread after my errands. She does state rather clearly that Tiffani gets a dose of the "what goes around...comes around" kind of karma......but whether that is in losing out to one of the guys in the final episode, or simply losing out in the "Post Top Chef" phase of her life....couldn't say. I do know that that she also indicated that she and Tiffani had sorted through some issues via email after the show. Karmic retribution comes in many forms....or so it seems to me. Sorry I didn't follow my intuition and copy the darn thing to review later, though.

well, basically she had a lot of colorful things to say about the tiffster, and the show in general. her last entry was really fierce... she made the karma comment in reference to tiffani, and talked about how NOT nice tiffani truly was in the house and off camera. she also said stephen was a *stand up* guy. however, in another entry she implied that some favors were being done by both tiff and stevie (see below) so i don't know if she liked stephen or not.
her first entry was really amusing. she taked about trying out for the show, psychiatric testing they had to go through and the security keeping them from talking to each other during the tryouts. priceless semi quote (can't remember exactly): "the testing must not be too accurate, the irishman got through"
but my favorite entry was from an evening when she was drunk... something about the turns the show had taken were total proof that the powers that be at bravo were definately getting blow jobs from tiffani and stephen. ROFL!! lia, am i alone in thinking that this implies stephen is a lover of the same sex? :::sobs:::
it is a little creepy that the blog got pulled so quickly
i wonder if she violated any rules?

well, i hope i don't break any rules here, but my sneaky detective skills have netted me one part of lee anne's blog, word for word it's the last entry, and i am going to c&p it... hope i don't get hand slapped
SO, here ya go, to everyone who wanted to read a wee bit of it!
Hi everybody,
With much dread and humiliation, I watched tonight's episode when I returned home from a glorious dinner and night out with some friends (Andrea Beaman being one of them). I actually skipped the 10 and 11pm showing due to a lengthy meal at Tom's newly opened Craftsteak and the NBA playoffs at a bar nearby. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty good about everything in the end until I actually got home in time for the 1am rerun of episode 9. For the record, there is quite a bit not seen on tv. I may or may not seem petty in that last epi, but it all seems quite out of context because what is not shown is Big Tiff and the 28 someodd days Harold, Dave, and myself had to put up with her smug, arrogant, condescending bull[FA edit]. She beat up on A LOT of people. And what a [FA edit] obnoxious know it all. We have already filmed the reunion and finale, and out of professionalism (and I guess "hope") I gave her the benefit of the doubt in terms of trying to see the good in Tiff and speaking posiitively about her outcome. She played me, just like she played the judges, and let me tell you, I'll say it once, I will say it a MILLION times, karma is a [expletive deleted]. The show was a humbling experience for a majority of us. Even for someone like Stephen, he took it as an opportunity to learn a little bit more about himself and assess what he put out there (and believe it or not, he is a stand-up guy). There is a huge part of me that wants her to win. She is a strong female, creative, resourceful, and most of all, smart. But you ALL know when someone is trying to put one over on you. You ALL want to strangle that [FA edit] manipulative two faced jerkoff on the job that seems to keep getting away with the snowjob. Not to detract from anyone's culinary skills, but I firmly stand by the fact that it takes much much more to lead a group of cooks, and inspire and work with others than sheer skill alone. No chef is an island. No Top Chef, including Tom Colicchio, achieved all that he/she has without the support and hard work of the staff below them. What it boils down to is people skills. And let me say, while the Red Dragon apparently wanted it more than anyone else in this competition, and was willing to go to any length to get there, she gets my props for a mission accomplished. "I didn't come here to make friends." Guess what [expletive deleted]????
In the end, I am so incredibly blessed to have met a group of people as passionate and focused about cooking and food as I am. I am still in close contact with many of my castmates...Dave, Cynthia, Candace, Harold, Miguel, Stephen, and especially Andrea. Top Chef was such a tremendous stepping stone for many of us. We review each episode as it debuts with the rest of tv land, with a bit of laughter and frustration, as the editting room is not necessarily kind, or just. Many of us are working on personal projects. Since the show, I have cooked New Year's dinner at the James Beard House in NYC, I am currently consulting on a remake of the German film ""Mostly Martha" starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Aaron Eckhart, we just finished production on our own show at The FCI "Chef's Story", which is set to debut on PBS in Spring of 2007, and god knows all of my other duties at the job keep my head spinning and my knives sharp. I want to thank all of you who have supported me and some of my soulmates on the show....we couldn't make great tv without the viewers. Please feel free to contact me at my work email: lwong@frenchculinary.com
This has been one of the most bizarre and wonderful experiences in my life to date, and I don't think it will be the last. As long as you all keep eating, we'll try to stay ahead of the game, even with 16 hours and boxed cake mix.
xo,
Lee Anne

STEPHEN IS FINALY GONE!!! NOW I CAN ACTUALLY WATCH THE SHOW WITHOUT THROWING UP!!! EVERYONE CHEER!
The ability of the moronic to create complete sentences truly remains a mystery to me, regardless of the fact that they cannot delineate between lower and UPPER case. Sometimes I wonder how they even manage to feed themselves, but then I remember, there are "helper" humans who lower themselves to their level long enough to try their best to teach.
My heart goes out to the teachers ...

Hey Lia! You are really a cool and self confident person to attack how I speak on a message board. I wish i was as cool as you and that I was so confident in my self that I would be so arrogant to mock another peorson you do not even know on a REALITY SHOW MESSAGE BOARD. Wow, I am baffled to how cool you are. Get a life, this isnt college english class, nor should I want to rise to your so called "level". You think your so much better than me and you are on another level, well you just tried to diss someone on a message board. I hope you feel better about your self B***, have fun being on your level and playing with your 15 cats!
Love ya!
I have 15 cats? When did I get 15 cats? Gosh, guess I'd better raid Petco later on. Actually, I don't have 15 cats, but if I'm ever in need of a helper monkey, I'll be in touch!
Love ya too! Mean it!!
Lia
Um..wow? And I thought I attracted hatred. I'm at the point where I wouldn't even have been bothered, Lia.

*Miguel seems like an ok guy but has the stare of someone a little on the 'slow' side if you know what I mean. I hated him copying Tiffany's bread pudding and can't believe how he threw Andrea under the bus.*
This has been bothering me since I read it and I would just like to address it.
1. I still maintain that since Andrea had immunity then how could he throw her "under the bus"? To do what that phrase indicates she would have had to be in danger of being eliminated and that was not the case. If you noticed Miguel was uncomfortable doing it but it was what he needed to do.
[...]
3. Can you honestly say you've never made a confection from Krispy Kremes? we were getting smoked up and doing that back in the 70's. Trust me, Tiff does not have a copyright on that notion, Though maybe if she and Miguel had been smoked up their respective versions would have turned out edible.
And what about Tiffani's ideas in the napa episode? The corndogs in the quickfire challenge reminded me of the munk fish dogs in the kids episode. She ordered lamb right after leann did while within earshot of her (in fact she asked if they had 'another' lamb). And this is the second time she did a gnocci (sic?) dish. Has she run out of original ideas?

For everything you've said here & more, it makes Leanne`s loss to Tiffany very disappointing.
Of all the days for Leanne not to shine. Amazing ingredients, great budget, fabulous venue, adundant prep time .........
Harold being under the weather showed that the stress of the competition was finally getting to them ...........
Had Leanne had an extra ounce of energy she might`ve had the presence of mind to backtrack on purchasing the lamb once she saw Tiffany & Harold kick in with the same choice.
Just wasn`t her day, was it?

You know, Lia, I survived a series of heart attacks back in 2004 and just finally got the all clear from a fight with prostate cancer. I, therefore, do not suffer fools gladly. If you like me that's great but if you don't then I don't really give a ****. I love my work, I love my hubby and I know what's really important. Someone dissing me on the internet isn't even on the radar.
Now it's time to get myself together so I can have dinner with my hubby and assorted friends at Kinkead's. This should be good. The shrimp and lobster papusas there are to die for.
Cheers
Tom
