I love your 'wish list' and that would be mine also.
**I can't stand the monotonous tone of Katie's voice. Did anyone else notice though in this episode that she seemed to be more in her element with the kids?
I couldn't help but notice that she was a bit more animated when she was at the boys/girls club discussing the challenge and the food. She laughed. She had voice inflection. She was more at ease.
She really seems to love kids.

Whats with the fake off screen voice over by the bald judge. It sounds like they had hom go back into a sound studio and add lines that were never said to the Chefs at the table. I like the show but that little aspect bugs me for some reason.

Well I have to say I watched the last episode where Brian was voted off, I must say a couple of Brian Team mates said that Dave was the team leader for that challenge and I think that Brian got kicked off unfairly. So judges I think you should look at the tape again, he was not the only one who said that Dave was the Teamleader his team mates said the same thing. Forgive me if I am going on. Okay so Brian carrots were over cooked, the kids also hated the applesauce at least he tried to get the kids interested in the food when his other team mates stood on the side lines and talked about him. I am a big fan of the show after cooking for 20 years of my life, in hotels, resturants, schools, cafes and hospitals also in the military and in jails also doing my own catering on the side. I went to the New York Resturant School now called (The Art Institute of NY).
So I do know something about this show and how we as chef's should conduct ourseleves in the kitchen. The two I hope goes is Tiffany and Stephen those two are very disrespectful and should not be allowed in the kitchen if they are going to talk to the other chef's as if they are not good enough to be there.
On another note my heart goes out to Cynthia and her Family God Bless you and your family. Keep doin what you are doing you are great at what you do.
Sorry so long.

I think my reply under the Show Heading should have been in this category. It was inappropriate for Tim Colicchio to not have told the chef that there was an ice cream maker available unless all the chefs were given a list of all the appliances that would be in the kitchen. Mr. Colicchio is trying to split time between being a judge and being "Tim Gunn." You can't do both. The judge from Food & Wine needs to become more comfortable in front of the camera. Her responses come out 'clipped' and it reduces your confidence in her knowledge of food. She should watch some of Nina best episodes from Project Runway. The best judge on the 'Sexy Food' episode was the chef from Citizen Cake.
I think that as a chef (not just a Top Chef), that one must know what is in one's kitchen. Maybe if he weren't looking around at everyone else's dish, he might have found the ice cream maker (it practically kicked him in the shins).

I really wish they had less Bonus Video of the Judges, and more about the chefs. The judges served their purpose, they aided the test groups with choosing who is to go home. I am uncertain why they seem to plug these judges and have them give us advice. I haven't felt compelled to watch those videos.

I disagree with all the bashing. I think a judge who KNOWS THE SUBJECT is more important than one who can pop off a one-liner. The show isn't about the judges after all.
I also enjoy the video's by Tom and Gail. It's nice to have the experts share. So what if they aren't actors? They know their stuff. I know I've learned a few things from them. It's an opportunity I would never have otherwise.
Mrs. Joel. No she isn't Heidi Klum and I'm glad. She had a good idea for a show and does an acceptable job as host. In fact... for somone who doesn't make a living "performing" in front of people (and lets face it, that's exactly what a model does, perform) I would bet she is better than 99% of the people would be. I've been in front of cameras and on microphones. It's is NOT easy. This isn't your home video folks. Lay off her and give her a break.

Yeah, you have a point, Sherm. Speaking of models (though I'm really going to speak of an actress, but one who could have been a model, and was once, perhaps??), did anyone else notice the Audrey Hepburn groove Katie Lee had going tonight? In her appearance at the Junior League? I guess it's just to my taste, but I loved the simple little black dress, big pearls, and slicked-back hair...and as I said elsewhere (probably on the Epi 4 board), all the judges are growin' on me...I'm liking them more, and I think it's 'cause they're relaxing a bit, not being so stern, showing their personalities...I am enjoying Katie Lee, but IF I were her PR advisor, I would...well, I'd suggest she take some elocution or diction lessons, 'cause I think what's a little off-putting still about her is the nasal and very front-of-mouth way of speaking she has...not that that's a criticism of her, just that some people find it a little unpleasant. With that addressed, I think listeners would cease to find her speech grating and appreciate her developing vivacity. IMHO!! (:

I think this is the area that I dislike most about the show. Colicchio or however you spell his name, I don't get what he is supposed to be doing here. He was kind of presented to be their mentor and helper, like Tim Gunn but he doesn't fill that position at all. He seems quite happy to smirk about them and enjoy their failings and downfalls while this can be entertaining not sure it is necessary to the show. His walk throughs seem to be more a joke then anything helpful.
The female judges I think they are good in their critiques and have very valid things to say they just come off very flat in front of the camera. Very monotone. There is no spark or chemistry in front of the camera.
I have to admit I enjoy the guest judges the most. They seem to have the most spark and are fun to listen to. I enjoy their criticism and think, usually, it is very valid.

I completely agree. He should be either a "mentor" or a judge, but not both. If Bravo brings this show back for another season, I hope they give the chefs a dedicated mentor who doesn't sit on the panel of judges (like Tim Gunn's role on Project Runway).

complete agreeance sherm. And as I've mentioned before, Ms. Joel is apparently the CREATOR of the show- so as much as most of us are loving it, she deserves total props for that. Yes, she still needs work as a host- but I'm surprised at the venom in these critiques, I mean I for one don't care all that much WHAT the host sounds like. I agree her card-board delivery is a bit annoying, but it doesn't compromise my enjoyment of the show. I do hope she continues to improve and I think she will. I don't think she has an iota of onscreen experience, that considered- not so bad.

I think for those of us who are used to Project Runway this is very confusing. We are left unsure as to what Tom's role is on the series. I think he needs to be either a judge or a mentor. As he is now, he can only be an effective judge. Even still I think if he is going to be as impartial as the rest of the judges, he should not be in the kitchen seeing all the mayhem that is going on. Since he is not allowed to comment or make suggestions, which makes sense since he is also judging, he can't be effective in a mentor role. I think the show should decide which they want him to do and bring someone else in to fill whichever position is left vacant.

Take some time to read Tom C.'s blogs where he tries to explain what his role is. As far as being a judge and a mentor at the same time, that only happens at the judge's table where the contestant has to take any criticism from Tom C. and make corrections in future episodes, provided the contestant isn't the one to go in the current elimination. Tiffani is an example. She cleaned up her act after the dressing-down she received in episode 3. As far as mentoring during the cooking portion of the competition, that isn't going to happen and that's the way it should be.

See, for me that is the difference...unkind? Are we to assume Ms. Joel is not getting paid for this and that the entertainment that is being sought by Bravo is not to be critiqued? Personally, I am a middle aged female and if I were to accept a job on TV, you can bet I'd have grown a pretty thick skin in advance. Surely Ms. Joel got some advance warnings about the woes of public life from her hubby?? So unkind? No, to be expected in this day and age? You betcha!

I joined the boards just so I could comment on KJ's voice. It's like she's a zombie, whenever she talks she's monotone and totally emotionless. I hate it when she has to talk and the worst part is she's the freaking host. She's almost robotic in the way she speaks, and I really don't feel she should be a judge, I mean what's her culinary background?

Taken from another website:
***In July 2005, Katie co-created the website www.oliveandpeach.com with partner Aleishall Girard. The site focuses on food and aims to provoke readers to think more deeply about the origins of the food they eat. It seeks to heighten awareness about the importance of "conscious consumption."
Katie's culinary and lifestyle column, "East End Girl," is published weekly in Hamptons Magazine and will soon be a part of its sister publication, Gotham. She has also appeared on Extra, Life and Style, CBS Early Show, upcoming episodes of Food Network's Iron Chef America, Fine Living's Pairings and she has been featured in publications like People, In Style and Hamptons Style.
Katie has worked in several restaurants and gourmet food and wine stores. In 2003, she helped to open Jeff and Eddy's Restaurant, one of the hottest dining spots in the Hamptons. There she served as the house fishmonger.
Katie received her bachelor's degree in English and Journalism at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She also studied in Florence, Italy at the British Institute. In 2004, she returned to her classroom in Italy to teach American students about dining in Tuscany.***

I have to agree on the main host woman. I don't even remember her name, but wow she must have some friends in high places. It's too bad, because I like the show for the most part. I think the contestants are interesting, but after falling in love with Bravo via Project Runway, I am dissapointed that Bravo would have such a person with little personality or zest on camera for a host. She is pretty, but that doesn't make her good. Why would Bravo choose someone who seems to not have a passion or inspiration for the subject? Hedi Klume at least LOVED fashion and could really talk about it. Sigh.........

I think a much needed aspect of this show would be for the contestants to ask Tom C. his feedback during the competitions - as the Project Runway contestants were guided by Tim Gunn - whose feedback was often indispensible. This show is missing the component of having a "true" top chef accessible to them and they are not using him at all. I think ALL the contestants would benefit from Tom's feedback and unbias guidance during each contest, not to mention for us viewers!

I hope tonight's episode is a sign that the show is getting better. With one other chef contest on tv and another one coming up "Celebrity CookOff" or something like that, competition cooking shows have their own competition. It was interesting seeing that Stephen actually is human. He was actually rolling around on the couch laughing. I get the feeling he has led a very sheltered, high end life. I don't know if I really dislike him as much as I first thought but rather feel sorry for him. I mean, wearing a suit and tie when you are going to be a streetvendor in an area like the Mission District. And for once he didn't mention wine during the entire show. As for Miguel, he seems to be imploding, which doesn't bode well for him. Next weeks show looks like a major turning point and we should start to see "the pack" start to spread.
