I watched the first episode and I must say I was feeling Jonathan's stress. I hope to learn something from watching all of the stylist. I do have a problem I was hoping someone could help me with. I was doing a color (dark burgundy with a red color kicker) with a partial hilite on top. Now normally this works well with other colors I have done but today when I rinsed and shampooed my client her hilites turned PINK. I used foil for the hilited and they were only near the color right before I rinsed her and just that quick that blonde sucked up the red. I was horrified and my client just laughed. I managed to fix it but that has never happened before. Anyone have any feedback about this? By the way I normally use Socolor cool reds for my color but she had this L'Oreal Feria color she loved and had been using. Against my better judgement-I used it. Could this have been the problem?
HairKerr76
HI! i have done the same thing!!! Its the xtra boost of red I think that does it on the high lift hair! I have learned my lesson and started taking my time and doing a double process.....being that you had to do one anyway!!!
shoegal
Don't worry things like this can happen to the best of us. In my experience I have noticed that the result is much better when I do my color and hilites seperatley. I have made a mistake like this before and let me tell you I was embarressed, but let me just say this- freshly lightened hair becomes so porous that it acts like a sponge and it absorbs everything- so with having a red on the hair along with the hilites I can see where the hilites absorbed the excess color. Just be thankful that your client was as forgiving as they were.
glenp827
HAHAHA I almost spit my diet coke when he was talking about having bad hair as a kid and now he does it well!!
He's got about the most fraudulent looking paste on hair I have ever seen. Now it really impressed me when they took a shot of him shampooing just to prove it was his, but have you looked at his profile and his hairline goes about half way back on his skull?? Man, that browline is completely incongruous with the rest of his pate.
Other than that glaring flaw, I think he is a manly looking type, one that walks through the airport with an aura that makes people turn their heads.
Best of luck with that FULL SPEED AHEAD new salon. It's scary when YOUR rear is ON THE LINE for it all.
Stylesavvy
Hey there. Yes L'Oreal made a mess. You didn't do anything wrong with the color or the hilite but the red molecules in "store bought" color are often bigger than professional color molecules. For that reason, red especially, doesn't penetrate all the way to the cortex as much as we would like, therefore it sits on the shaft to get rinsed out. When you took off the foil and rinsed, the minute both colors met the extra red was "sucked" into the blonde, and since blonde is light, it holds color. Nothing to worry about. the fact that it turned pink mean that there wasn't enough color in the red to develop the true color so the "pink hilites" probably would have gone back to normal after a few clarifying shampoos. Lesson learned- don't use WalMart color, with Matrix talent! I hope that answered your question. If anyone has any questions fee free to ask.
RobbCarlos
Heya Kimmieo, about your problem with your hilites turning pink...here is a simple solution...rinse the base color out of the hair while the foils are still in...after the majority or all of your red is rinsed out...then remove the foils from the hair!!....I found out the hard way too!!
bryteyes
I have to agree that's one way to fix that mess. Always remember that the store bought crap doesn't compare to our colors ex.Goldwell true and trusted. Always double process those reds. And Please take your time your clients will love you for it.

So to all of you wonderful stylists out there here is a question to all of you. I am a stylist and I have been for about 4 years. I used to work in a salon in my home town and I had a booming clientele and then I had a hard time with the new owner that purchased my salon. I decided that I never wanted to do hair again and I left. After 6 months I could not live without doing hair and I went on the hunt for the perfect salon, finally I found what I was looking for, but now I am struggling to build up a new clientele. How do I go about this?? The new salon I started working at is wonderful and has a great team of stylists, but I'm the only one that has no clients and I just sit around. HELP!!!
Jazz
Ok, What I cannot understand is this is suppose to be a "professional" salon. So what is up with the "Revlon" products being used? Revlon is not a professional product but it will make the client out there watching this show think it is. Revlon is a public comsumers product.
RobbCarlos
Heya Shoegal!!...and I dont mean this in a bad way...but for starters...STOP SITTIN AROUND!!..If there isnt any business that you can accumulate thru networking within your salon...then reach through your existing clients!!..offer them specials for bringing you new clients...HAND OUT THOSE BUSINESS CARDS!!! Offer free haircuts just to get them in your chair....give a business card to every NEW person you come in contact with from your grocery store to your bank to the host at a restaraunt!!...Its not gonna happen overnight but if you do these little things....I PROMISE you, you wont be sittin around!!!

Never give up!! You'll be GREAT!!
Kimmieo
Hey thanks to everyone for all the great advice on the pink hilites. I'm still laughing about that. Anyhow, I noticed your log in name was HairKerr. Is Kerr your last name? That's my maiden name. Hmmmm-could it be that I have maybe found a relative online?
Kimmieo
Hey Shoegal-I am in the same boat with ya babe so don't feel down. I worked at a chain salon with a built in clientele and after my manager screaming at me for the third time with a client in her chair, I had enough and walked out. I was also sick of those hours that made you lose your mind. I have been independant for two months now and while a lot of my business is the few walk ins and the occasional shop customer who makes an appt. for anyone who is available (me), I have always looked on the bright side. That bright side for me is while things may be slow at first, I am confident enough in my abilities as a stylist to know that the clients I do WILL return to me. Also I can set my own schedule which leaves the family time I need. I also own a Karaoke business and I now have no scheduling conflicts. Hang in there. It takes time. Post flyers with your specials on them. Maybe advertise a very inexpensive haircut day for the next month say on a particularly slow day. I'd rather do a 10$ wet cut than nothing at all. Good luck to you!
deeraee
I would stop using the Feria! It is the worst - IMHO.
colourdiva
Hey I use socolor in my salon and sometomes it can be the red booster next time rinse the hilites first and put a really thick conditioner on them. If that doesn't work then you can use a product called malibu crystals at the shampoo bowl and it will take the pink out. On the packaging it is for removing minerals and chlorine but has saved me before.
As for using the grocery store color it doesn't help in the fight against diversion or our reputation as professionals.
Good Luck Colourdiva
shoegal
Hey RobbCarlos,
Thanks for the advice I guess I just have to be patient. The hair business is a tricky one. The only problem is I can't really run many specials because our salon is one of the higher priced salons in my area and my boss is always concerned about lowering the prices at all. I know I am very good and I hope that doesn't sound cocky, but after someone sits in my chair once they always come back. I just need to work on getting more people to just sit down. Thanks so much, take care. Shoegal
Steven
Hi, my name is Steven and I am a full time hair colorist. If I read your post correctly, you foiled in a partial highlight and then a single process color in between the foils? My question to you is, why would you remove the foils of highlighted hair before rinsing all of the single process color off first? Rinsing off the color in between the foils with very cool water and you should never have this problem.
Stylesavvy
Hey everyone, i was just wondering if anyone knew of any opportunities or was looking to hire someone to work for them or with them in hair. im really into production hair as well as i like to try new things in haircolor and life in general! i currently live in NY and do hair but im always looking for that new and exciting opportunity!!! If you know anything any response would be greatly appreciated.. im up for almost anything
Kimmieo
Well I guess I should start by saying that I was terrified of doing color and hilites together for the longest. I became quite comfortable with it and enjoy doing it. I know it was that L'Oreal color with that red booster that did it. I knew better than to use it but this girl brought me her own color and wanted to use that particular one because she had used it before. Even so I have rinsed many color/hilites by removing all of the foils at once-even other reds without this happening so it kinda freaked me out. I shampooed her at least five times and that color kept on shampooing pink so it was a lose lose situation after that. Good advice though- I will try that next time-rinsing separatly. I am thinking of switching from socolor to Redken color fusion or something else. I love socolr's reds but their neutrals are ashy and I don't like anything ashy unless I need to cut red. Suggestions?
Jinelle
I here you Jazz!!!!
they use REVLON for the make-up stylist too!!! LOL

I'm no hair sylist but I know that is not typical!!
Jinelle
I'm shopping for a flat iron, but I have no idea on what type I should buy or what I should look for. Can anyone help me on suggesting which type to get????? Please!!!

I heard CHI is good but let me know somthing!!!!
Andrew
I was wondering the same thing but somebody has to foot the bill
hairdiva35
Hey shoegal, I know how you feel, I went through the same thing a while back. How about taking a ad out in the local paper, for maybe a special price on a service as long as they request you , they get the price. Or you could make up flyers and put them on windshields of cars in a shopping centers parking lot. There are all kinds of ideas to bring in clientel. You just have to be creative, and us stylist are so creative. I have been doing hair for over 12 years and have seen it all . Right now I am working in a professional theatre and have done a few celebs myself. You will get there again. trust me , good luck.
hairdiva35
I was thinking the same thing,, why are they using Revlon, yuck, I mean for the teenager who does not know what she's using , maybe its okay , but us pro's do not. And I want to know what products he uses in his salon. I heard he has his own product. And will someone Please get rid of that Brandon. what a piece of work he is. If I owned a salon in Beverly Hills , his mouth and the way he dresses would not last 2 seconds with me.
hairdiva35
See even a person who is not a stylist knows that Revlon is not used in pro salons.. The answer to why is that Revlon is a sponser of the show, they most likely pull out the real stuff , like Mac or whatever, when the camera's go off.. lmao . And I use Wella Koleston perfect color , never once had a problem with it, I wonder if he uses Feria , or whatever that revlon color in the stores is,, lmao. I would hope he knows better if he's working on celebs. I worked on a celeb who will remain nameless in my theatre, And I used Koleston perfect color on him, I would not dream of using a product that is sold to the public on a client of mine much less celeb , or the high brow folks of Beverly Hills.
maryj
yeah i thought that was strange to use revlon. wonder how much revlon shelled out! dont u think it kinda undermines the stylist cred?

Looking for some good advice and wisdom... I've been secretly contemplating changing careers by attending cosmetology school to become a hair stylist. I have a good job earning a decent salary in a field completely opposite from the beauty industy, but the trouble is, I hate my job. Another issue of mine is that I'm turning 30 this year, and I don't know if it's too late for me to "start over", as it'll take me about 2 years to get through cosmetology school (part-time) and another couple of years for an apprenticeship before I really launch my new career. It seems that most people start out really young in this field, and by the time they're 30, they've had at least 10 years of experience and are well-established. I'm also worried about the possible decrease in salary, as I need to continue to pay the bills. Can any of you great stylists out there offer some advice? I would be abundantly grateful!! Thank you for your time in advance!
RobbCarlos
Has anyone else other than me been waiting to see some really awesome hair???....hmm..Im hoping that I havent just become complacent in this business! Ok...the hair that Brandon did on the 15 year old that he asked if her high school teacher ever flirt with her(yikes, careful Brandon you dont want to reveal too much about your fantasies!!), she had great hair walking out of the salon..NOTHING EXTRAORDINARY....but great! Jasons client Peter Reckell from "Days"...well...i just wasnt feeling it! But if he was happy...hey...who am I to say!!

Im ready to see from these guys , why I got into this business!!! Bring it ON!!

The reason why Queer Eye works and this doesn't is that Queer Eye does not purport to be "reality" and does not hide the pushing of their commercial sponsors. Last night's episode of Blow Out had Antin discussing the value of American Express' "One" product and the makeup artist and Tish discussing Revlon makeup. The woman who supplied the shampoo bowls asked Antin for his American Express card. This sort of commercialism is boring and it insults the audience to call it "reality", this was all scripted, it is so obvious.
badluckchick
To piggy back on Blueturtle's post, I've been thinking about going into makeup and I've been looking for cosmetology schools or programs in NYC. I'm having trouble finding anything that doesn't look like a scam. Any advice?
12278
Actually all Stylist use revlon and other products you can get in any store. The difference is they know how to put it on your hair the right way.

I watched the first episode and loved it!

I wish though that a few of the contestants would have stayed on. I loved Ivan- Even though they said he was too tall, and you he was gay, he was HOT!!!!!!! WOW, WEE.....
BrandonsBabe
Hey, I don't have time to read all the posts here, but I skimmed through all three pages and I can't find out how much the cost would be to have Bradon cut hair would be. I can't find the salons number either. I asked this in a Blowout LJ community, but they just said to call and ask. One girl said that Lamar does a wash, cut, and straighten for $40. I'm going back to Southern California this summer, and I've always wanted to have one day where I just spend more money than I should on styling or something since that's not something I would typically do. But I don't want it to cost too much either. Does anyone know how much it is? If you could let me know I'd be so thankful!
mahbizznazz
Jazz, I totally agree. Why would they show the make-up artist using Revlon..Puleeze. I also hated when Jonathan was doing his clients hair and mentioned how American Express Open was working for him. Like the client really cared. We know Lenscrafters, AE and Revlon are the sponsors but c'mon it doesnt need to be crammed down our throats.
ErnestoSF94114
Sweetie, a shampoo&set, and cut alone in a upscale salon <in SF> typically runs about $100.00-$150.00 not including tip. If you can find anyone in BH that will all three for $40.00 you rule!
BrandonsBabe
Yeah, someone in my LJ community posted the Salons #, for Brandon, its $150.00! I'm kinda bummed, Brandon rocks! Plus what he did on that one chicks hair was very awsome! But hey, I've never given up that easy! I'm gonna see what I can do, if I can't do it right now, or this summer anyways, my time will come! haha. But one girl in the same LJCommunity, she said that her mom and Lamar were friends back in Tucson AZ, and he cut her hair for $40.00, and he still does even at Jonathans, I wish Brandon was that much! all well, as I said, my time will come. . .

Jinelle,
I just bought a CHI turbo (it has temperature settings, unlike the original CHI) and i love it! You def. want a ceramic iron and i think chi is the best brand out there. Try looking on Ebay. I got mine for way cheaper than retail price and have had no problems with it. I hope this was useful! Let me know if you have any questions!
sheydan
Base color of burgandy is usually violet. Did you use bleach on top of the color? If so then a lightened version of burgandy would be a pinkish tone.
sheydan
I have a great way to build your clientelle. Send out fliers of postcards to wealthy neighborhoods near your salon and give away a color service on the first visit of any new client as long as the get a haircut the same day. If you think about it...all you are giving them is about 5.00 in products and your time. If you do a good job on the color then they will come back for years. I worked behind the chair for 13 years but now work with a distributor. I have seen stylists use this and really change their situation fast. Let me know how it works if you try it.
sheydan
Some more advice....don't ever discount your services...instead give something away..like a bottle of hairspray. The VALUE of your service stays the same and they think about you everytime they use your spray.
sheydan
Paul Mitchell has an incredible new flat Iron. If works better than the chi .

Yes! It does work! I did this in my working days as a nail technician/manicurist and it landed me some good customers.

I use Feria at the moment. I was wondering if there is a better brand out there that will provide longer lasting color especially at the roots which are greying. I am not a professional hair stylist but have to color my hair at home because I am on a serious budget which sucks I know. I would appreciate any advice by the beauticians on here. Thank you.

I know. When I saw the girls at the salon going through the makeup pretending it was great, I was like "What's that about?" But obviously Revlon has some sort of contract with the show and the salon profits. It's similar to the obvious plug Jonathan gave for Open while talking to his customer. I swear ads are so shameless nowadays.

hi. i like my chi alot. i've had it 3 years. it s the old model but the chi turbo is really nice. it has the temp gauge and it has felt so u won't burn your fingers or ears if u use it on yourself.
i need advice... need new clippers. i used wahl before. i heard oster is good. any suggestions?
maryj
if u really feel like doing hair you should do it! when i was in school most of the fellow students were over 30 or approaching it. i was really surprised b/c being 18 at the time i thought there would be more people my age. Most of the other women had school age kids, worked in other fields and had interesting stories to tell. three semesters later, it was those women who finished school, took the state board, got the license, lived the dream. there were some that dropped out for their own reasons(stylists have alot of drama). most that didn't finish were the ones that didn't take it seriously: i.e. didn't have bills to pay, or kids, still living at home etc.
bottom line- you're never too old!
Many of my peers were on a govt grant. i went to a public school- jr college. if there's a public cosmetology school in your area maybe u could look into that. its usually cheaper than going to a private school(at least here in texas). i'm not speaking for all private schools but the ones here well, sometimes you don't get a good foundation. they just put u on the floor and expect u to do clients, especially if the owners just want to make a quick buck. in our school we went from 8am - 4pm Mon thru Fri. So if u didn't work nights you would need a scholarship or something.
good luck blue turtle!

I have a great flatiron that I love - it's the Solano Sapphire 11/1120 and it runs around $100 but it's wonderful! I know Johnathan is pictured using the Solano hairdryer I use too - so that's a pretty good recommendation for the brand :-) Definitely look for ceramic (holds heat evenly) and I love that mine has a removable comb on one side. Here's a website with some more info on Solano: http://www.totalvac.com/flatirons.htm

Also, here's one way to tell if something might REALLY be "professional" like all brands love to print on their boxes - look for the length of the cord. Tools that are honestly used in salons all have really long cords. Hope you find one you like!
Usofunky02
I'm attending cosmetology school and we use matrix. lol just saying. i saw someone talk bout them and being w/ matrix
Usofunky02
like i've stated in other posts..im attending cosmetology school and im going part time which is from 430 pm to 10 pm and i work durin the day from 9 am to 3 ..i can't wait til i get out of school just because I'll be able to do more of what i like to do on my own time and in an actual salon. Anybody have any suggestions on how i can get over the lil fear i have when it comes to clipper cuts?? I can't seem to do a good fade lol! I get nervous every single time and I think its because it takes of soooo much hair at one time and guys are pretty picky about they're hair and I don't want to mess it up...so if anyone has any idea of what i could do to get over this i'd really appreciate it

Hello everyone! I'm new to this, I hope I'm doing this right. Anyway, I LOVE LOVE this new show! It's awesome! I'm currently working in the corporate world and I've had my cosmetology license since 1998 and I'm finding it extremely hard trying to work my way into the cosmetology industry. This is what I want to do, this is my DREAM! I want out of the corporate world! I want to be a full-time salon owner! Since 1998, i've been working from home doing friends and family and I've also had some part-time jobs. It's hard to find a part-time cosmetologist job. Most hair salons are not open in the evenings. Any suggestions anyone? Should I keep looking for a part-time job and stick to it until I can go full-time or should I just continue to work out of my home? I need more experience. I want to learn more. I'm terrified going to advanced classes due to my experience. I don't have much experience as a cosmetologist. What to do? It's very frustrating.
alandaniel
I need help with one of my clients. I've been highlighing her hair for a while now and she is completely blond. She now wants me to color her hair instead of highlighting. Would it be recommended that I use color instead of the highlighing cream that i've been using to do her highlights? If I should use color, what color line is great to use? She is a level 6 and she still wants her hair to be blonde. Not a dark or too light blonde. Can I get her hair up 3 or 4 levels using color? How do I know what color blonde to use to get to the same blonde that she has in her highlights? Can anyone help me? Is what I'm asking clear? Let me know if I don't make any sense. You can respond to me in here or send me an email at adanpell33@yahoo.com Thanks in advance to any help I can aquire!
