I'd like to say, I think Jason is particularily talented....loved what he did with the waitress. However, for the most part, I think male stylists only need to be half as good as female stylists to make it twice as far. There is some sort of "status" people think they have if a man does their hair. They have this perceived talent simply by being male. I'm not saying that some men aren't good stylists, but I know many, many, extremely talented women stylists that work their buns off for half the credit that so-so male stylists receive. This show is a prime example of that. The women seem to be taking a back seat to the men........Having said that, I do love the show - comes on tonight - can't wait.

The best info on make-up and skincare is the book " DONT GO TO THE COSMETIC COUNTER WITHOUT ME". Its the best investment i ever bought. I am a make up artist/stylist and ive worked with many different make up lines and to me each one has their specialty item. Ive worked for Borghese, Fashion Fair and Christian Doir and i have a favorite item from each one. There is not alot of difference from the department store brands than from Target. NOW AS FOR JONATHAN USING REVLON IN HIS SALON...I think it is wonderful that he offers a make up line that the average woman or man can afford at their local grocery store.

What the hell is wrong with Jonathan???? Jason was always busy and makiing money for the salon. So what if he was a little weird, that is Beverly Hills, most of the people that are willing to pay that kind of money are pretty excentric anyway. I'm really not liking the way Jonathan deals with the salon and his employees. He is not a good boss, he has a lot to learn!!!

hi cg.. I am so glad you mentioned rusk. i am a former designer, with rusk. rusk str8 irons are far superior than the rest. when i joined on with rusk, 11 yrs ago, we were the only company "mainstreaming" a flat iron, so we could show how awesome we were. Our "blowdrys" spoke for themselves. I like this show, but, I cut very urban street trendy hair. its too bad he doesnt have that edge. louise rusk said to us designers years ago..."you cant have modern hair withou texture". Rusk has the edge on texture(always has). razors, slide cutting, notching , chipping are not what it is. thanks for mentioning our flat irons they ARE the best. be passionate about what you do. you cant hide it! JINELLE, the CHI is a good choice but the PAUL MITCHELL is a better choice....the difference of the flatirons you ask....the CHI is ceramic, but only ceramic plated( the outside layer). the PAUL MITCHELL is ceramic from the inside out, the whole plate is ceramic.

Just one thing to add about Brandon being let go. If anyone shoud be cut, it should be Alicia. I'm a stylist in a high end salon, and if any employee marched around like she did, engaging other stylists in her complaints about not having someone to sweep up the hair at her station or rinse her clients' colour off, they would be fired immediately. If Jonathon thought Brandon was being unprofessional, he needs to get a new pair of LensCrafters glasses and see what others like Alicia are pulling. Clients don't want to see that kind of petty nonsense, and certainly not when they're paying upwards of 200 dollars a service. Furthermore, Alicia, if you think you're too good to sweep hair and rinse colour, you need a reality check. Real professionals will take care of their own clients from start to finish, regardless. Jonathon, I think letting Brandon go was a hasty decision. As far as the cameras showed, he seemed more likely to rise to the occasion, he's just very high energy (which in my experience is a positive trait in this business.) If someone like Alicia won't do the forementioned in order to take care of her own clients, that poses a bigger character flaw and will likely do more harm in the end.
Best of luck with the new salon.

Canadianstyly, I think you make an interesting point about males vs. females in this industry and their success and the perception of "status." Do you think that it could possibly be because there are more clients that are women that are seeking out a greater number of salon services (higher dollar, higher maintenance) vs. male clients, and maybe the female clients are drawn to the male stylists due to the dynamic of the personal interactions? - i.e. maybe it's psychological in that they feel like they are being "taken care of" or simply enjoy male attention, or think that if a man makes them look good, this will also make them look appealing to other men?
Or do you think it is similar to many other industries where women tend to take "a back seat" as you said? Again, there are many theories on this...for example, perhaps the women aren't as aggressive in being recognized for their talents as some men are...? And that's definitely a huge shame.
Just some thoughts and theories...I found it interesting.

I am not in the hair industry but a very close friend of mine is. If you think this show is scripted and not real - I think you are SADLY mistaken. This show reminded me so much of other salons my friend has worked in it is unbelieveable. This is a great show and I do think it is giving you a pretty realistic look in to running a salon. Yes, there is editing and some scripting for TV but all in all, it is an excellent series and I HATE reality TV. I mean HATE it!
And on a totally seperate topic - no one could say that the waitresses hair that Jason cut was not a work of art or that Jonathan's high school classmate did not look a million% better after her makeover. It was worth every penny she spent for the smile she had on her face when she walked out and showed her girlfriend what happened. And what about those 3 girlfrinds/mom's? Did they each lose about 15 years after getting their hair done and new glasses, or what?
(I do hate the cheesy - let's all go to Lenscrafters to get new glasses plugs for the sponsors)
Beauty can be a life changing industry. It is made to make you feel good about yourself and sometimes it really is worth the money

I agree. Although I'm not a hair designer, my career has been as a psychiatric nurse, so I find I watch the show from a different perspective. Basically, we're all seeing it from a client's viewpoint, but then we have our own unique take given our life experiences. I find it totally outrageous that Brandon was fired. He is what gave the salon flavor. To me, part of the salon experience is watching the staff, and creative people are by nature more "out there." I found that almost everything (correct me if I'm wrong) Jonathan admonished Brandon about, he was guilty of himself. I saw lots of "ink" on J's arms doing that fashion show. (He didn't like Brandon showing his ink.)
He asked a woman for her number who came to interview for a job. Isn't that sexual harrasment? Since he was in the position to hire her, didn't he have an unfair advantage? Brandon asked a client for her number. So what? Women appreciate the attention and just say no nicely if they don't want to. If her pressured her, then yes. That would be a problem. But each time Jonathan spoke to Brandon, Brandon corrected his behavior to do things Jonathan's way. After all, as silly as some of those things were, it was HIS salon, so he either follows his rules or works somewhere else. But the guy WAS doing as he asked. He was never corrected about the same thing twice.
Salons that charge those kinds of prices are going for the total experience, not just a wet cut and goodbye. I would have expected the chairs to have either more space or some type of divider between them for privacy, especially for the more well known celebrities. The dividers could be a trellis with hanging plants. If Jonathan can keep a steady flow of clients coming in for him, that means they enjoy his particular personality. If they didn't, they would choose someone else. I will miss Brandon. He was a standout as far as personality, and he must have been decent with hair. Again, not my forte', but he didn't lack business.
I think that's the real problem: jealousy from the quieter, more sedate stylists as well as the big man himself. More privacy would have taken care of clients' attention being diverted to the more flamboyant Brandon. He was sexy. A good salon would have something for everyone: quiet, gay, flamboyant, male, female, "rocker", punk, and preppie. That's the name of the game, right? Change and be who you want to be. I predict Brandon will have his own shop. Someone will back him once they've seen him on this show.
WHEW! Got all that out. I hope it doesn't get boring now that he's gone. I am fascinated by this show.

I think you mean Brandon. Jason is the blonde guy.
While I don't always agree with Jonathan's management style, I think we knew Brandon was on a short-time. He was a bit "over" for what Jonathan was looking for, and I was surprised he hired Brandon, but maybe he thought he would alter his ego to suit the place. And while I do think Jonathan could have done better with the way he fired Brandon, I know that the others were breathing a sigh of relief. With the amount of ego from those two I bet every ounce of air was sucked from that small salon and one had to go. Jonathan's name was on the front so we know who had to say good bye.
I don't think Jason was so much as a tattle-tale, but was just discussing the shirt incident with the other stylist when Jonathan came in and like always, Jonathan seemed to act at the moment instead of waiting and thinking things out. I do think he didn't know that Brandon and pal were having a body contest. He seems near-sighted to me. He can see clear enough to cut hair, but can't see anything long distance. Contacts don't always help if you have an astigmatism. And I think he's too vain to wear glasses constantly. Maybe for driving or seeing the mirror at a distance, but not all the time!
Also, it wasn't only that Brandon asked a client out that got Jonathan mad, it was he had gotten her number from the clients' book and called her at her home! A big professional no-no.
As for Alicia... Oh please. Acting so glad when someone gets fired? and the temper tantrum when Jonathan and Edward moved her things over? Again, whose salon is it? and do you have the name value or talent of Edward? Then leaving and whining because you feel out of the loop when you come back? I have a feeling someone else's number will be up soon.
In such a small salon (I mean space and number of stylists) you need a good team where everyone knows their job and gets along. There's room for only one diva and Jonathan has one. (Always room for talent however, and it seems Jonathan's salon has plenty! All of the makeovers seemed good!) As for the lack of spice in the haircuts, it seems the long, straight hair is in style right now and they're doing what their clients want. I mean who would expect originality in BH? Obviously someone who doesn't watch tv! Thank heavens for the waitress! Someone who did try something different!
P.S. what is with that flower in the hair of the OC actress? Except when Brandon did her style, she has one of those crummy flowers in her hair. A style that really only looks good in the Islands unless your under ten years of age...

I know that people who get there haircuts there have no worries about affording their makeup also. Its for the people who cant afford to step foot in the salon, and can easily get the makeup down the street so theres no need to go in there to get a 400.00 haircut and use revlon cosmetics.
----speaking of TACKY!!!!!! who goes to a store named RALPHS
Im sure jonathan is saving his butt alot of money of by using REVLON in his salon. If he was using a line like MAC, he would have to purchase at least 10,000 dollars worth of product just to sell it in a salon. So my guess would be if your going to charge for the best, use one of the best.

totally agreed!... management at my previous salon hired a male stylist to do barber work ( his bio included barber training in prison for fraud burglary and many other undesireables, plus much time served in rehab etc.) needless to say, despite his talent, he was very unreliable, unprofessional, and irresponsible, yet clients actually thought he was the manager, not the female stylist who was the manager. why? because as the only male in a salon filled with females, he was seen as the " man in charge". this stereotype is not accurate, and in this day of age it's sad to have to see a professional woman with many more years of experience have to prove herself, ten times more, than a male with little or no knowledge in the same field.

I don't base where I buy my groceries by the name of the store. You do? Are you from the midwest? Do you shop at Eagles? LOL! Watch out for bird dropings! Make sure you don't look up and make sure you keep your mouth closed. LOL!
Seriously though, I suspect that Joanathan does not need to worry about how much money he is saving by using Revlon or any other product for that matter. Money is always made or it is not offered or used, that is how they stay in business.
As far as the show goes, a lot of times deals are made with the suppliers if they are going to be on a show like that. I think you know that. It would be interesting to know if they always sold Revlon. I don't buy Revlon but I'm just saying in most High end salons like Jonathan's you would not find them using Revlon. It feel it takes away from them, that was why I thought it was WAAAAYYYYYYY to TACKKKKYYYY!!!!! OMG! Tacky tacky tacky!!
I don't like the show constantly throwing in my face the products, even Lenscrafters. Sure you need advertising, nothing wrong with that, but I think they over do it a tad bit much! And that is why I also think the whole show is tacky and that is why I will NOT continue to watch the show.

Sharon,
I think you're forgeting this is a show geared for "ratings". Though its claim is "reality" and to some small margin of degree it may be. But in reality it is very much scripted and directed for dramatic affects!
Who wants to watch a really well organized, ultra profesional salon with no dirt!? LOL Too boring...
If they're getting a rise out of the viewers it's good for ratings.

.........I have to agree with this.....I worked in Beverly Hills right out of school as a manicurist, my husband was a hairdresser, I worked in the top salon at the time, also at Vidal Sasson, then we opened our own salon in Hollywood, got out of the business, anyway....let me tell you, NEVER EVER did I see the type of behavior that goes on in "Blow Out"....it would not be allowed at all, no way, there was always a tremendous respect for the owner, the stylists had respect for each other and worked as a team....always...of course there were disagreements at time, but they were not discussed on the floor in front of clients.....I liked the first few epsiodes I called to make an appointment with Jonathan, he is one of our clients (my present job), and our rep used to have him cut her hair, he did a GREAT job, anyway, after watching more, I thought to myself that I could not bear this type of salon environment..as shown on Blow Out...I was listening to the radio this morning, with Danny B as the host , he said he went into Jonatha Salon to cut his hair, said all the guys were straight and buff, and all the girls were beautiful, now I wonder if he was speaking of the W Hollywood salon, as I did not see this in BH, but this lead me to believe that the show is a "fake ratings" thing, I also read in a magazine, forget which one, Jonathafn quote....that Brandon was hired because the producers wanted him on the show, J did not......well, it IS all about the ratings and money here in "Hollywood", I find it very hard to belive that Jonathan would have such disrespectful stylists, manicurists, etc....I for one would not them working on me with those attitudes, I know that Johathan would give me a fantastic haircut, but at $400, there is just no way he would hire low budget people, would you Jonathan???????? PLEASE tell me is isn't so! (Jason IS great)......I suppose I shall have to go check out the salon before I cancel my appointment....just to reasure myself that I won't be walking into major "drama"......

Hi, I've only been doing hair for 2 years now and still learning. I find useing red kicks or any kind of red intesifier the red likes to bleed onto the blonde. I find keeping water on the blonde area's help a little with that. Sometimes we do back to back foils of red and blonde, that's easier to rinse because you can do one foil at a time, mind you that can hurt your back. But it works most of the time.

hey blue turtle, i know exactly what you are going through. I am a 23 yr old male, i work in the Health Care field and make a really good living at what i do, but there is something missing, i have always been intrigued by the aspect of doing hair, but have just brushed the idea aside and went on with my life. I have always been the type of guy that all the girls come to and ask how should I get my hair cut or how bad do you think my hair looks. I think going to Cosmo School would be amazing, I am just not sure if I can actually go through with it, the change would be like night and day for me. I am not sure where you are from but I live in SouthWest Virginia, and things here are really limited, and there is no high end Salons, just a lot of Barber Shops and a couple of "Day Spas"(if you can call them that) Sorry for the "book" here but it was cool to read your post, finally there is someone else who is going through the same thing.

Wow! Thank you for telling me about it. I will ask my hairdresser, Jennifer if they use this brand in her salon. I used to use Wella Color charm in Cinnamon Brown. I am using Feria' from Loreal at the moment and the color I use is called French Roast-Deep Bronzed Brown which is very close to the color that I noted above and very close to my natural color but with a little more of a kick with some pretty reddish highlights. The only problem with Feria is that the grey at the roots starts showing a little after a few shampoos which sucks. Ok! Now the whole world knows that I'm 38 and greying at tje roots hahaha! I wondered if I was the only one who noticed the terrible hair on Jonathan. I like him, I just wonder if he watches the show!?! If he did, he would see how he has bad hair, and that he should not let his employees manipulate him so much. I LOVED Brandon. I even like the blonde with no clients and no shampoo girl, what's her name? As for the head stylists, give me a break with the pink hair, and the no leather thing, but I like her most of the time. The "delicate boy head stylist" tells on Brandon like a scene from Tom Sawyer, but he is a very good stylist, the best I have seen on this show so far. I would have to tell Jonathan that if Brandon's lifting up of his t-shirt was so disruptive and awful, how is it that Jonathan wasn't distracted by it as he was in the SAME room. HUH? Also, Brandon did not REMOVE any clothing. If the phone number/date thing was so bad, a policy forbiding such behavior should have been outlined at hiring, or orientation, or posted on the darn wall. Stop the tattle-tale na na na boo boo stuff, already!

Dear Briteyes:
Do u happen 2 work in Twin Cities? U remind me of an excellent stylist/friend who worked in Both Vegas & Mpls. He was so handsome, (a cross between James Dean & Montgomery Clift), and so smooth; Jonathin would cry! He was also totally focused on his work. He was overly sensative at times which led to a type of intolerance like Jonathan has -- for people who are not "like him".

My mom teaches at Marinellos and she makes sure to demonstrate "state board", but because she also has a salon she demonstrates what she does in her salon that doesn't put the client at any risk. I don't think its strictly a California thing.

Hi, My hair is bleached platinum but I would like to change to a medium blonde. Is it true that I can use a store-bought haircolor and apply using a 10 developer, or is there a better way to make the change?
Thank you in advance.

I live in Philadelphia, love the show and have always been fascinated with hair. I am constantly changing my color but I am at a loss when it comes to a style. I have naturally curly hair and it seems difficult to achieve alot of styles. I am totally in for a big change does anyone have any suggestion. My hair is currently reddish brown (dye job) and it is a little past my shoulders. I would love some highlights and a great cut and style. Please help???

and that was exactly what I was about to post. when ever doing hilites and color at the same time always rinse out the color with the foil in place, I do this all the time and have had great results, there are times when a blend of color is perfered then remove foil and work color throught out the hair as a whole, great results

just a random question: I was wondering if anyone knows what brushes kimberly and elizabeth used to blow dry hair? They were used all throughout today's episode. They are round brushes with mixed bristles. I would like to know the brand or available places to purchase. Thanks!

when you do blondes and reds together you should always get all of the lightner off of the hair before it comes in contact with the red color, or any warm tone (they are strongly pigmented and just get sucked right into blondes) I always rinse them one at a time. also feria is a metallic based haircolor that is not able to be lifted all the way out of the hair withour compromising the integrity of the hair!! you could have done a bleach wash on the blondes to get out the pink.. how did you fix it??
