How do I make a regular post to ask questions or make comments. I'm new to the site and I'm having trouble doing this. Thanks in advance for the help:)

I am a hairstylist who uses the HAI ceramic flat iron for professional and personal use. My iron is about 1 1/4 inch wide. I LOVE IT!! Just because your hair is thick does not mean you need the wider iron. I find that with the narrower iron, I have more control of the hair. My hair is thick, long, and very curly so I am speaking from experience. Yes you will have to take smaller sections (between 1/2 to 1 inch) but I assure you it will be worth it. The iron gets to about 400 degrees so it does not take long at all to get the hair straight. Just blowdry your hair and start sectioning it to flat iron. Once I figured out the easiest way for me, it takes me about 20 minutes to flat iron my entire head. Also, if your hair does not get oily quickly try washing and flat ironing your hair at night or after it is straight, go a day or two with out washing it. Good luck. I hope I was able to help.
Peachy
Hi everyone! It's me again, Peachy. I originally posted back on 6/28/04 describing my interest of breaking into the beauty business (and when I say "business," I mean on the business side and not so much on the "technical" side). Unfortunately, I didn't get responses for advice.

So, here I am again. My current initiatives are to conduct "informational interviews," which is common for someone looking to change careers/industries. Informational interviews are simply meetings that you with set up with various people in the industry - in several different companies, several different positions/levels, etc., so that you can get a perspective of the industry from several people already in the business. There are tons of websites with tips on how to go about doing this. The idea is that when you are doing this, you are never asking for a job, so the person you are "interviewing" doesn't feel any pressure, and is much more willing to spend some time talking with you. Also, these meetings should usually not take up more than 30 minutes of the person's time...(time is money after all). This can ultimately help you in your job search indirectly, because you are "networking" every time you meet someone new, and this could open the door to keeping in touch with these people no matter what the final outcome is.

I am currently working on a set of sample questions that matter to me, and am putting together a list of salon/spa/corporate beauty businesses in the area. I live in Southern California. As I mentioned before, I have done some research on my own, but what I'm doing now is different approach, because I really want to make things happen. Some of the specific SoCal salons/spas that I have visited/researched so far are as follows (sometimes this simply means that I made a hair/spa appointment for myself for cut and/or color, etc. - good research, huh? also expensive research!): Frederic Fekkai, Christophe, Fred Segal Beauty, Jose Eber, Trinity Spa. A couple of others that I am also interested in are as follows: Prive, Juan Juan, Estilo, Robert Cromeans, Chris McMillan, Toni & Guy...

Can you all help me identify some others in the area that are really outstanding - salons/spas or other related businesses? Also, what about some ideas for "job positions" in the industry that I should include for my target informational interviews. If nothing else, some great places to get my hair done to at least have the "experience" as a client?

Thanks everyone!!! By the way, isn't there going to be a second season of this show? Someone mentioned in a previous post that it was being taken off the air? BOO!!! I love this show!

I was wondering if anyone knew what brand of equipment Jonathan uses, specifically the white styling chairs and dryers. Also, does anyone know where to get custom capes that are customed embroidered like seen in the show?

Hey all. Looks like a lot of stylists here, so I'm hoping someone can help me out and answer my question. I'm wanting to get my hair cut like Annie's, with the long sideswept bangs. Right now it's probably about 2 inches shorter than hers, and doesn't have much in the way of style of layers, as I've been growing out a short cut. I just don't know what exactly to tell my stylist to make sure I get the right cut. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Hello everyone out there. I would like to say that I adore Blow Out. I have a question on if Jonathan ever travels to do hair? We would like him to come to Roanoke Va:) I love the work he does. I wont go near a hairdresser any longer cause noone that I have ran into can do long layered cuts any longer. Trust me I have had it done numerous times and walked out crying. Any suggestions? Thank you for listening:)

Hi! about being too old to start a new career,
I'm 46 and I've been a hairstylist for 10 years now and I wouldn't change a thing I love my work the moneys not bad and I'm my own boss(chair rental) But I would suggest that if possible you go to school full time and enlist all your friends and family as customers that should help get you started. I did it the hard way and it is taking longer to build a client base than if I was fresh out of high school and in a town I grew up in.
I say go for it and good luck.
canadian
If you have a more honest way PLEASE tell me ?
I'm not saying hogg all the new clients.
where I work there's only the three of us and they have been in the bus. for 30 years and their loosing clients that move, die, etc. and I was just starting out and the agreement was I'd get the new clients and then all of the sudden their doing walk ins and I feel I had to play hard ball to servive.
canadian
you should try american crew forming cream it's light but has hold without the wet look (blow dry in style then rub thumb size amount in hand start in front run hands back like to slick back then pull forward.
hope that works for you.

Come on. 20 years in the biz and you treat your staff like they are dirt. I also own a salon I worked my way up the ranks from shampoo girl to salon owner. You must have heard the expression that you get more with surgar than vinigar! Your staff is what makes or breaks you. Sitting in your back room back stabbing is just about as childish as you can get. Have a staff meeting and air all the difference there. Not while your stylist is with a customer. And the fact that your stylist dished to his customer what was going on. Oh Please !!! Maybe you should sit and what the show to see what you are not seeing. >>>

Whoever posted this hit it RIGHT ON! i totally agree with you!!!!

oo and why on earth was Brandon fired before snotty nosed no clientelle Alicia?!
terisassy420
Thats how I do it too. Rinse, rinse, rinse! Why take the time to color first, plus then you have all that red to pull out for the highlights. What a pain. Just leave the foils in when rinsing and take your time pulling foils one at a time, making sure to rinse as you go. The x-tra time you take to rinse will save you time and the texture of the hair. I always like to run a gloss over bleach highlights anyway even if they don't need to be toned. This will lock in that red and make the highlight shine. I always put at least 12oz of light blonde to my gloss, nobody wants white highlights, they look much creamier with a touch of color.

hey im a 17 year old junior straight guy, i have always been kinda a hair junkie and done all kinds of stuff with my hair purple and red flat irons and product u name it i have or have had it. my latest cut was a modern mullet/faux-hawk, not a Joe Dirt mullet but a cool one it was like 3 in. in back and 5 in. on top and buzzed on the sides. my dad got mad after 2 weeks screamed and called me an idot so i came home from school and shaved it. sadly i look retarded with no hair. I will grow.....i hope. anyway i do alot of the kids close to my age's hair in my very small school of 400 K-12. cut color straighten curl u name it. im always asked if im gonna be a stylest when i grow up and have always shrugged it off. i have always loved doing hair but felt i have much more than hair to offer the world. but after seeing blow out i really am thinking about it. i was wondering if there was any school i could take and complet during the summer. i already do hair i might as well get a licesense and charge for it. any advice or help on this situation.

I think Jonathan is just a big baby sometimes, hes not open to any changes at all. and to say that he may have hired the wrong people. the people on this show are awesome hairstylists and Jonathon just needs to chill and get organized.
bekasmom
I actually have a question. I have naturally curly, frizzy hair. I can straigten it with a flat iron but it'll take about 2 hours. Is there a product my hairstylist can use to chemically straighten or at least relax my hair?
Wendy13
All I can say is love your curls.. That is what I tell my clients... Try and ease up on the straightening and give your hair a break... With my clients I suggest Hang Striaght and Retexturizing gel by Aveda... Blow it out and then a flat iron:)
slawrence
hey im a hairstylist, your hairstylist could use an anticurl or a relaxer on it and it will last until it grows out. i have a friend who did that and it looked very good. how curly is your hair a little or really?
Wendy13
Be patient:) They will come back... Go to the nearest mall and start handing out your cards, friends, family, and eventually your work will speak for itself. You WILL get clients... It just takes time;)
Wendy13
If you love hair, stick with it and go for it:)
Wendy13
Oops Hang Straight.. sp....
KirstenO
Hey There! Ok, when doing a double process with Red and hilites, you MUST keep highlites in the foil until the red is completely rinsed out. I have done that, only once though, but man what a mess. Good luck.

Heres my problem...I have not been on the boards in a year...So I never saw the replys to my post back then...What I wanted was pics of the haircut Jason did to the waitress in the first season...I read they were in the picture section but this season the pics have changed...Does anyone know where I can find them now?

cheers to you starting whatever your age. i'm a 49 year old nail technician, now in the biz for 8 years as such. i quit my 20 year career in graphic arts to go to school for my nail license -granted not as many hours as hair- but i was(am) a single mother, no child support, had to go on welfare for a few months, had a lot of help from my family (praise God), commuted 200 miles round trip from my school to where i live to be home with my son for 2 days a week, then back to school again, and passed my boards in the top percentage. it CAN be done and the only time it's too late to start over is when you're dead. go for it. check out what state assistance might be available, get a part time job before-during-and/or after until you build up your clientele and DON'T GIVE UP!! i don't particularly like the type of guy jonathan is but he's got one thing down_if you want it bad enough, it will come.
bekasmom
Very very curly.

Not being a reality TV show fan, I quickly was hooked during the first season! As a business person I can relate to Jonathan's struggles. I am watching the first episode of season Two as I write this.....I feel his stree with being pulled in a thousand directions!

if I ever make it to CA I would love to stop in the salons. Of course, that would mean I would have to take out a second mortgage on the house ( no offense to Jonathan or any of his staff......vacations are just expensive) but I think that a full day at one of his salons woudl be worth every penny! I have finally found a stylist that i trust which is VERY important. I miss the days when I wa sable to just sit down and let my old stylist work and not have to worry about his end product.

At the moment I can empathize with Jonathans frustration with the marketing and devevlopment of his product! The R and D and sales side of any business can drive any oone insane!
I cant wait for the next episode!
jillebn1
Same here raven...I've been searching high and low for a pic of that cut as well. It was awesome...has anyone had any luck finding any pics from last season?
cstern
Can anyone tell me what the brand and model of the cell phone that Jonathan is using? Also, what cell phone carrier he is using?
jen7727
Hi - could not see how to post a new messgae so I replied here...I loved the cut he did on a woman with dark long hair - he cut alot off - do you know how to explain that cut to a stylist???? Thanks so much!

I'm not a hairstylist but I have been coloring my own hair since I was 14, I hate using store bought products, where can I purchase professional hair color that is used in the salons?
seasuzie
Hello, I have a question. Their seems to be alot of stylists on this message board. I'll be 40 in August and was thinking of going to beauty school because I've always loved hair, and watching blow out makes me want to even more. Do you think it is too late?
meadow
No its not too late. If that what you want to do go for it!! I have been in the business for 12 years as a stylist. I went back to school and got my Instuctor Lic. I was an Instructor for a year and there was all ages going to cosmo school. I missed being a stylist though and went back to working in a salon. I like to teach but love working behind the chair.Follow your dreams!!!!!!!

I'm not trying to be rude when I say this but.....
Professional products are called profesional products for a reason. The products that we use in the salon are professional grade. Meaning they have higher concentrations of chemicals, like peroxide, ammonia and so on.
If you are not trained in the knowledge of how to use these products correctly, you can do serious damage to your hair.
In most states it is against the law for an unlicensed individual to purchase proffesional grade products because if misused, they can be dangerous. We as stylists go through fairly intensive training to learn how to use, properly store and dispose of these products.
If you like coloring your own hair, you might be a good candidate for Cosmetology school, then you could work with color as much as you want !
seasuzie
thank you meadow

Those Desing people are HORRABLE... why would you ever put up with people like that! I think he should go with something like this for his logo. PLAIN BOLD and SIMPLE

I just registered and I'm completely frustrated with the format on the board. Normally, a "Post New Message/Topic" button is available to users to avoid thousands of re: replies as you have here. I noticed there is a "post" button shown but it isn't linked or workable. This board is extremely user-UNfriendly and nearly impossible to navigate. Maybe I'm missing something on how the forum works but the FAQ section didn't really address these problems, either. Any plans on tweaking some of these issues? I love the show but all the response congestion is giving me a migraine because I can't find anything I'm interested in unless I read nearly every post. Maybe you could at least post directions on how to change subject lines-that would help a little, maybe. I'd appreciate a response if you have a minute. Thanks.

Hey Wendy13, I think I might know you, but I could be wrong...little over a year ago, I worked for a Wendy who owned an small, amazing Aveda salon here in New England, you suggesting Aveda just perked up my ears and I was curious! If not, I'm totally with you on Aveda, I miss my Aveda Concept salon, I'm in a Family Salon now and it's so not the same!
pinkykat
I think it is too masculine. Jonahan is very femme.

If you're interested, Jonathon's product line is now featured on QVC. Check it out at

Now that I know what the final packaging looks like, it's going to be interesting to watch them arrive at it.

I have found that rinsing the hair in cool to cold water helps a lot in rinsing red with highlights. Mine never blead again after doing this. Hope this helps. The cold water immediately shuts down the cuticle incase you ask
maryjo31
If you still live in your home town you should have a record of your clientelle and just call them up or send a post card to let them know where you are now. if that doesn't work put an ad in the paper to let them see your somewhere else, that always works.....

I myself don't do chemical straitening, but on my curly clients who don't want their curls the best product I have worked with is Pureology Super Straight.Every person I have used it on has raved about it.I have been told by my clients they get the best result with using it with a flat iron and if they decide to wear their curls that it gives great hold and really defines the shape.hope it helps.Good Luck!!

Does anyone know if Jonathan is commission or booth rental? In Houston, booth rental is (unfortunately) very popular. In S2E3, he attracts some apparently famous-ish stylist and is "honored" to have him. He also says his chairs have to make a lot of money. But again, it appears his people have to have their own clients and build their own clientele. So, on one hand, it appears rental-y, and on the other, it appears commission-y.

Also, if it's commission, what kind of percents are these guys getting? Surely Kymberly isn't getting the same as some high producer like Jason or the new guy. But if it's rental, how does she afford the rent.

Also, when the new BH colorist shows up, the assistant says "here's where you can put your color" as if to indicate he's responsible for his own color.

Very different from Houston.

Any insight is much appreciated.

The best way to get over your fear of clipper cuts is do a day of free clipper cuts, have someone on hand to help correct any "mistakes" you`ll be surprised how quick you learn, plus there free so most people won`t complain, explain why your doing it.

Use what you know and trust..
All the OTC colors are built to perpetuate our business, in this case reds fade, and these types of color companies know this and throw as much un-nessessary pigment as possible into the mix to counter that or to passify the public trend or fashion statement... in any case as a compassionate dresser you want to do what makes the client happy so you give in and bam... the work is messed up and time wasted in redo hell because we are used to the "good stuff".

I'm a Matrix freak, I always come back to it, even after Goldwell, Framesi, etc. It's the natural beauty and depth that I love.

But this industry is a learning experience, so don't loose sleep...your client thought it was funny!

What the heck is that behind Jonathan's head on the header of this page???? It looks like a bowling pin kicking a bowling ball...
