I was wondering if anyone knows of a good hairdresser in northeast Ohio(preferably the Akron-Canton area)?
I was going to a salon in Wooster Ohio, but I couldn't stand the hairstylist's high falutin and conceited attitude. She traveled all over the world going to hair shows and claimed she won all these Matrix awards and that her salon beat all the New York salons(yeah, right....)I couldn't stand her pompous attitude and the way she talked down to me, so I stopped going to her. She was good, but not THAT good.
Then, I recently found out that the last hairstylist I was going to, has been arrested in a major drug ring. What luck I have with hairdressers!

What the heck is that behind Jonathan's head on the header of this page???? It looks like a bowling pin kicking a bowling ball...

That is weird. There's a spray bottle, a chair, a comb and a bowling pin kicking a bowling ball. Maybe a mistake in the art department, or an inside joke, or maybe it's symbolic of something...maybe it means Jonathon is really as bald as a bowling ball. The bowling pin is bald too, and look on the right: is that a rug?

I think that Jonathan needs to be more multi-cultural within his salons? Meaning having stylists that specialize in different hair types of different races? The show is great, but what is the point of watching it knowing that if I am in California, and wanted to go to a Jonathan salon that I would not feel comfortable getting my hair done there.

Whether it's politically correct to say it or not, most salons cater to a particular niche, whether it's a financial, cultural, or racial demographic. No single salon is going to be all things to all people. A place like Jonathan's, for example, isn't going to be the right fit for someone in a lower income bracket. Does this mean I shouldn't watch the show, simply because it's outside my price range to actually *go* to his salon? Heavens, no. I watch it for the drama, not because I think his salon is a fit for my personal needs. If your yardstick for judging a television series is whether or not you could personally hang out on the set, you must not get to watch much t.v.
I've been a stylist for ten years, and in that time several of the black stylists I've known have told me, flat out, that if they want their hair done, they go to a salon that is owned/operated/frequented by other black people. I don't think that makes them racist, I think, GENERALLY speaking, it makes them realistic. A person will know best, and best deal with, a hair type most like their own, since that's something they'll have a lot of experience with, day in and day out.
By the way... how are you so sure that Jonathan's salon *doesn't* have a stylist that can do different hair types? We just see clips of them working, we don't watch them 24/7. It's entirely possible that one of the stylists is fully capable of doing a broad range of hair types and it just hasn't been a focus for the show.
Meh. I'm ready to get off the hormone roller coaster... I feel like Foamy the Squirrel.

I just bought some Dirt at Sephora and it was $26. It was about 10 more dollars than I would spend on the other product I used but it was worth it. I like it a lot. It doesn't make my hair sticky or greasy. Other styling pastes I use can barely be brushed out without my hair looking like it is full of grease. It doesn't weigh my hair down and it holds extremely well.

I'm not sure where Akron/Canton is, but in Cleveland or Cincinatti (whatever), I know there is a reputable chain of salons: Mitchell's. One of the girls there came to Houston to do education (Sahag). From what little I know, they seem to be pretty up scale and talented. Couldn't say how the attitude in the salon is. Haven't been there yet.

I havn't bought any of the Jonathan Products yet, but the price range seems just barely a bit higher than other upscale products... Aveda, which I work with in my Salon, is close in price, as is Bumble & Bumble, etc. Aveda has organic ingredients, his are vegan, with that theme you're paying for more expensive ingredients, not to mention the name on the label. In the end all that matters is that it's a good product, and it's worth the price tag. It's hard to find products that work perfectly, Control Paste from Aveda is great but is grainy & too sticky, gets a little gross when it's really hot out. As a stylist, it's just a constant search for the next best thing, we're always coctailing 2 or 3 products to get the result we want. Clients don't always want to but 3 products when they should be able to get the same result with one. If this line holds up tot he hype, it'll be nice to have around!

Thank you! It's about time someone mentioned this. I agree with you 100% I also feel that it would make Jonathan even more money as well as attaining an African-American fanbase. I believe there is an African-American stylist working in the West Hollywood salon. He was even on a few episodes in season 1 but they really need to get more African American stylists in both. It's all about the hair baby! EVERYBODY'S hair

I see your point about the lack of diversity in Jonathan's salon. I also believe the perception is unjust. Being an Black woman who recently relocated to L.A. from the Midwest (resided in a city that is labeled the "hair capital"), I was in utter shock of the lack of professional, talented hair stylists in L.A. Despite the "crap" I hear on TV and read in magazines, Los Angeles doesn't ascertain the level of professional showmanship I thought it ACTUALLY had. I currently have a stylist who isn't Black and it's not a big deal. Some of my friends ask if I am uncomfortable and I am not. I am paying for my hair to be professionally maintained by someone who knows what he/she is doing. I am not trying to find someone who looks like me but doesn't understand my hair needs. That was the issue I ran into over and over. People who don't know what they are doing. Once I saw Jonathan scrutinize his stylists to be the best, I was happy. As a Make-Up Artistry Trainer, I do the same thing. Those who excel and move on doing celebrities, etc. got there because they KNOW what to do (by the way, I think Jonathan's personality is cascading because the cameras are on.) I noticed there aren't many hair stylists willing to put forth the effort to build a solid clientele and actually keep them. Most of them are about being the "DIVA" and want to hop on every TV show or video for quick money. With that said, I am not surprised that Jonathan's salon has a specific genre of folks.
Unless we actually worked there and saw each and every customer, it would be hard to justify labeling him. When I frequent Black salons I seldom (if at all) see other nationalities working there. I don't see Black women complaining - telling Black salons they need to add White, Asian or Latino stylists to their staff. I also don't know too many women regardless of race who are willing to pay $250 and up for a hair cut. Jonathan's prices for simple services range from $400 and up. I would rather pay take that cash and put it towards my mortgage. While I do find a lot of value in the comment, it speaks to only what the producers want us to see. The channel the show is shown on isn't diverse towards other races either. But, one of the best men on Jonathan's professional-freelance staff IS a black man (the guy with the dreads) who may not be shown often on the show but is definitely in the upper crust of getting the higher end clients than those stuck behind a chair. What I would LOVE to see is Jonathan so something funky, non-Hollywood AND short hair to show versatility. Every person behind his chair appears to have long extensions or naturally long hair and that IS what the camera wants us to see.

ok people first of all how many black people live in beverly hills in the first place? and how many would go to what they would consider a "white salon" in the first place? most african americans are very picky about where they get there hair done its usually word of mouth or someone they know where they feel comfortable in, and as far as multicultural one of the first things i learned in hair styling school is you have to learn to do all types of hair no matter what color you are

I'm with ITSTHATGAL! I also live in Jersey and I have had nightmare after nightmare every time I get a haircut. My hair is long, thick and wavy with an angle around my face and long layers all around. The last stylist I went to pulled it up into a ponytail on top of my head and hacked about 3 inches off the tip and said, "all done". I wanted to die.
Can anyone recommend an AWESOME stylist in Jersey???

I don't mind spending the money on the products if they are going to work and make my hair look good.

He never said he came up with "heroin chic". He never even used that phrase. What you are referring to is the scene with Kristen Bell. When he was talking to her about different ways he could do her hair, he described a certain curl as a "heroine curl". I think he said it an off-the-cuff manner to get a laugh. The style he did for Kristen looked nothing like "heroin chic". So there.
But anyway, he's doing pretty good business for a fraud, don't you think? I mean, Kristen Bell and Alia Shawkat for the Golden Globes on the same day...

I never really gave it much thought, but I think it represents a juxtaposition; the bowling ball it usually the one doing the bossing around, and now it's the pin. Maybe someone will end up taking charge and/or bossing around Jonathan? Who knows...

I go to Perfect Look; not the most glamorous of places, but what else can I do in Alaska? And their coloring and layering is fabulous; I had bad luck with straight bangs but it was probably just bad on my face shape. I got sweep-away bangs, though, and they were beautiful.
It's a nation-wide franchise, I believe, so it might be in your area.

I am a college student in florida and have the toughest time to manage my wavy to curly hair from the weather being hot and humid. It gets kinda puffy in certain sections which just totally bothers me. I have used wash out conditioners of several brands as well as leave in conditioners. Those have work some but after sometime my hair got immune to it and its doing whatever it wants again. I have gotten to the point of straightening out my hair with a hair ironer which is wonderful but I have been laying off on that to allow my hair to breathe and recover and not dry it out leaving it to curl naturally for this summer. The problem is of course the puffyness. I have used frizz ease but doesnt do anything major. What can I do to remedy the puffyness?

Have you tried Sebastian's Laminates Gel? My hair is naturally curly, and when I lived in a high humidity environment that was the gel I used to give me some control and shine. It doesn't dry stiff or crunchy, and it keeps the curl intact without puffiness or frizz. You can also use it, since it's a silicone based gel, when you're going to blow dry it and straighten it. I love the product and recommended it highly to my clients for years, with great results. They were all loyal to it once I got them started on it. Even though the PR for the product stresses straight hair styles as it's goal, it is a wonderful product for naturally curly hair. Just remember, since it IS a product containing silicone, you MUST be careful and use it in small amounts, otherwise it can get a bit greasy or heavy. If used correctly, though, it's FABULOUS.
Hope that helps

I agree the cut was killer - BUT - it ALL depends on the hair itself - weight and volume. IMHO, too many people forget that when demanding their stylist copy a style they saw on someone else's head.

I just registered and I'm completely frustrated with the format on the board. Normally, a "Post New Message/Topic" button is available to users to avoid thousands of re: replies as you have here. I noticed there is a "post" button shown but it isn't linked or workable. This board is extremely user-UNfriendly and nearly impossible to navigate. Maybe I'm missing something on how the forum works but the FAQ section didn't really address these problems, either. Any plans on tweaking some of these issues? I love the show but all the response congestion is giving me a migraine because I can't find anything I'm interested in unless I read nearly every post. Maybe you could at least post directions on how to change subject lines-that would help a little, maybe. I'd appreciate a response if you have a minute. Thanks.

You're a joy to hang with -- talented, good heart, appropriately quirky, totally open (warts and all), but WHAT'S WITH THE HAIR??!! Do you really feel that a "renowned hairstylist" should be seen in public with a "do" that looks like Woody Woodpecker with a hangover? You're not fifteen, y'know, and someone of your ilk should not be caught dead embracing an image of teenage rebellion -- especially a faddish hairdo -- and most especially one that glorifies no STYLE and CLASS at all! Hi Kary, if I may ask what part of FL are you in? I went to FSU, GO NOLES!...but that's another story.
There are a few things that stand out that you said about your hair.
1. "Puffy" in certain sections
2. used both wash-out and leave in conditioners but hair has become "immune"
3. you live in FL where it's hot and humid.
Why are these relevent? Hair is 70-85% protein, 10-15% Moisture, 3-6% Lipids (natural oils) typically with naturally curly or wavy hair the moisture content is low and therfore especially in humid conditions the hair is trying to get as much moisture as possible. With fine hair, moisture is prevelent and therefore your friends with fine hair will typically complain about their hair going "flat" in the humidty because moisture attracts moisture.
Hair really dosen't become "immune" to a product however the hair will react differently during different times of the year. Those leave-ins probably work better for you in the fall and winter than in spring and summer when it is more humid in FL although, being from there it's humid alot! What we would want to use on your hair during the more humid days will be a leave-in that contains natural emollients such as coconut oil, avacado oil, apricot oil as well as Glucosamine which helps restore moisture and Glycerin to seal and balance the moisture level. There are several products out there that contain these ingredients. Silicons repel moisture so it does help with the "frizzies" but it's a topical solution that dosen't address the problem. That's why silicon products are mainly used as a finishing product. But be wary of using too much of a silicon based product with a flat iron, as it can "plastisize" hair preventing moisture from ever penetrating into the hair shaft.
And finally, when you visit your hairstylist, go when you have the "puffyness" in those sections, a remedy for this can be "internal" layers or layers underneath the outside lenght so that you don't see the layers. "Thinning" or blending shears is not what you are looking for as this will only cause your hair to become more puffy with increase in volume and the apperance of more fizzyness.
I have many good friends in FL that are hairstylists that I could recommend you too depending on where you live.
ENJOY:)
