I really like the fact that the Jonathan staff is a team and they all are very talented at what they do. I also admire Jonathan because he is fulfilling his dream which most of the time isnt easy, so I think he rocks for that ! (Also Scott is hella Hot !!!!!!!!!!!:-)

I do not understand how Jonathan can possibly do any work with Scott of Orbitz; he is truly one of the most unpleasant, arrogant people I have ever seen on any reality TV show...
I would pull a Donald Trump and say "Yah Fyuhd"! What an arrogant [expletive deleted]. There is only room for one of those on this show!

Peggy, the technique is called "bayliage" (different ways of spelling) pronounced ( BA - Lee - AuGh). Frederic Fakki is one who has made it very popular in the states, I wouldn't say he introduced it but diffently brought it to the mainstream public.
Anyway, it's not really done with cotton, cotton is only placed in between the sections but this does not always have to be done. The mixture of what you are using be it color or a lightener needs to be realitively thick but spreadable. No weaving needs to take place, simply pick up the hair about a 1/4 inch thick section but as wide as you want it to be (thin or chunky) that you want to place the lightener, hold straight out from the head pinch the ends with your fingers and hold, then starting in the middle of the hairstrand sweep straight out to your fingers, the brush should be turned so that its more vertical than horizontal like if you were using foils. Don't recharge your brush with more product but now go just past where you started closer to the scalp and sweep to overlap your starting point, do this again getting closer to the scalp but not touching the scalp... always brushing out towards your fingers. Then you can lay the cotton on underneath the hair you just put product or you don't have to because of the thickness of the product it won't run, nor is the product on the underneath side of the hair so you won't get the dreaded "bleeder". Practice on a mannequin first.
They are many different ways to do this, some will use a brush and a small paddle to run the product out without holding it with their fingers, some may use a plastic spoon, or knife, I actually use different size make-up brushes from Japoneseque because they come in various sizes and angles, I may only need a very thin detailed pieces that follow the outline of the face or fringe so using an eye detailer brush gives me what I want.
You can also check out other hair websites like behindthechair.com and others to learn more about this technique. Siggers hairstylists in Atlanta has many classes and you may be able to find something on their website regarding the technique.

Hello,
I'm a big fan of the show. I'm interesting in having hair extension, I know that it is not cheap. But I'd be more happy to become a hair model if they need one. Could anyone tell me the process or the info on how the Jonathan salon find models for the hair show?

This show is the funniest thing ive ever seen on TV. This Jonathan guy is so out of touch with reality it is halarious..I absolutly love watching him act like giving people hair cuts is hard LOL..and his life is soooo hard to handle, what a pre-maddonna calling himself not a hair dresser but a hair stylist ooo big difference johnny boy, your job not only is not an important one but the fact people pay you so much to cut there hair just shows the bigger problem with our country in general.. Jonathan is the reason the rest of the world hates us so much... anyway i have never in my life seen something more conceited than looking in the mirror and saying "if this doesn't work for me nothing will" LOL what an idiot... I love how cool he thinks he is with his trendy as hell little tattos on his arms and his benz (which seems to be the main character in the show, which is understandable because trying to make a show around this guy must really be tough for the producers) .. "I'm so stressed out" what a girl , you cut hair haha, you dont even work, you sit there and cut hair to listen to this guy say the things he says while pullin 5 bills for a cut is vary eye opening to me , to know there are people out there with two kids no husband and work 60 hrs a week just to bring in 5 bills a WEEK...and then to turn around and watch this girl complain about his life is a riot.. I wish so much this guy would lose his stupid litle shop and have to actually work for one full day (real work) so if you read this johnny just know you not only come off as the biggest idiot on TV (and thats sayin somthin) you are the biggest idiot on tv...and in that case maybe the entire country. I love the forced crying at the shrinks place to awwww how cute~!!~ "i cant do it, its to much for me to handle, all of the hair to cut" HAHAHAHAHA ...Johnny you do know that you have the easiest life ever compared to 98% of the people watching this show, i wonder if you can even understand that?? do you? or do you genuinly think that your life is tough in anyway shape or form.. people like you make me want to throw up and the people who pay an idiot like you are just retarded. It is really a shame to think someone like you has that $ when there are so many people in this world who actually desserve that money, and some fool like you has it, it really is a shame when i think about it. I hold you johnny girl as an example of why there must not be a god, if someone as shallow , trendy, out of touch w/ reality, and FAT haha, has what you have and so many people out there who are curtious, nice, hard working, and break there backs to get by have nothing. If you came to work with me for one day you'd be crying calling your shrink by noon. By the way you are not tough dude, im sorry but your the furthest thing from being tough your closer to gay than tough..west hollywood lol come to buffalo and see how tough you are, .... god your soo out of touch dude, do you actually watch the show and not crindge at yourself , if i was you i'd read the newspaper and see all of the people suffering in this world and id realize , o my god im the luckiest fool in the world, you should be donating 400 of the 5 to charity because on top of it all you suck at cutting hair, the local hair solon around here i see better looking hair cuts walking out of there than at your place.. so in closing , i hope you dont completly fall apart from your stressful life of cutting hair, your a barber idiot.. you deserve 10 dollars a cut... and your not that good looking dude, especially wen you take your shirt off, all the sudden your a fat forty somethin with to much money... god i hope you read this or someone reads it to you.. you are just a girl~~~!!!!!! that really guy dude who works for you is more of a man than you could ever be. "all i care about is perfect hair" that statement is the stupidest thig ever, thats all you care about... your shallow as a sand bar , girly ... late

hey! After college I decided my true calling was cosmetology so I entered school in January. So far I'm loving it, although I do find that there is a lot of 'downtime' in the school. I try to keep myself busy when clients don't come in by working on my mannequin and learning/practicing as much as possible. I just think the whole clocked hours thing doesn't make any sense though. Do any of you have some advice for students like me?

Essentially it will hurt your relative's feelings if you have already been going to them and don't like how they style your hair, its like 'cheating' in a way. However, your relative should understand that sometimes another stylist can fullfill your needs as you see them, I mean, your relative could be a great stylist, but the new one could be more intuned with what you want out of your new 'do. If you feel that you'd be happier with a different stylist, I'm sure your relative would understand (as long as you still sent your friends her way). ha

Thanks, LordofHair, for your hair info and tips. I live up in AK, so humidity is not really a problem for me. However, I do seem to have a problem with dryness... I find that normal conditioners make my hair totally grease out, and the only one that doesn't is Pert 2-1 with Light Conditioner. However, I hear that 2-1 products aren't very good for hair. So it's between using leave-in and frying it daily with the blow dryer, or using 2-in-1 Light. Are there any healthier options? I don't want to have my hair fried out by the time I'm 30!

No, not at all. It's about choice, not family obligations. However, you should tell her discreetly (try saying, "I think I'm going to go try out that other salon I've heard of, just for a change...") in order to prevent any surprises.

BTW, I was wondering if anyone had a picture of that one hair cut that Jason Low did on the first season, with the razor. The one that Jonathon loved so much and had him duplicated in the episode that just aired.
I really love that cut and am thinking of getting mine like that, but I'd like to have a picture to take in. Would anyone happen to have one or know where I could get one?
Thanks so much.

Thanks for the compliment. Try going to your local book/magazine store and look for some Hairstyle magazines. The new issue has Hilary Duff on the cover. You could probably find a cut like that. If there are any differences, try explaining it to your stylist. Also, if there are no similar cuts in the magazine, try looking at the books outside of the salon. Usually they have almost every type of cut.
I don't know how else, because I can't find any screencaps with the special razor cut on it... anyone else?

Any tips on achieving the "wet look" for a guy? I have tried a bunch of products (e.g. Matrix Wettrax. Unfortunately my hair is on the thin side and receding so factor that in as respects to your opinon.

hey im a 17 year old junior straight guy, i have always been kinda a hair junkie and done all kinds of stuff with my hair purple and red flat irons and product u name it i have or have had it. my latest cut was a modern mullet/faux-hawk, not a Joe Dirt mullet but a cool one it was like 3 in. in back and 5 in. on top and buzzed on the sides. my dad got mad after 2 weeks screamed and called me an idot so i came home from school and shaved it. sadly i look retarded with no hair. I will grow.....i hope. anyway i do alot of the kids close to my age's hair in my very small school of 400 K-12. cut color straighten curl u name it. im always asked if im gonna be a stylest when i grow up and have always shrugged it off. i have always loved doing hair but felt i have much more than hair to offer the world. but after seeing blow out i really am thinking about it. i was wondering if there was any school i could take and complet during the summer. i already do hair i might as well get a licesense and charge for it. any advice or help on this situation.
As a stylist for 13 years and an educator I can let you in a little secret........getting your license and charging for your work does not make you a stylist. The education and skill you carry with you is what makes you a stylist. Now to be a great stylist is up to you. There is anatomy, biology, chemistry and color classes. You need to know the makeup of the hair nails and the skin. Textures of hair, natural base color of the hair. Cowlics, and the natural growth pattern of the hair. When it comes to color I never just put a straight color my clients hair, I had a tone and demension to the color which includes 2-3 diffrent colors. The color I devise is the one and only for them. Anyone can go to a discount store and put a box color in someones hair, everything is premixed and measured but when you are in a salon, you mix those colors yourself. There are techniques for cutting and perming, some techniques are beyond your imagination. As far as education, if you becoming a senior this year and have all your credits completed and have good attendance, you may enter post secondary schooling. Good Luck and keep your mind open!!
Now to all that are whining about Jonathon and his staff being glorified barbers and you do not understand where the stress comes from, come live in my world for a day, you have the clients who have no idea on how to explain what they want, and come with pictures and say I want my hair to look exactly like Paris Hilton's or Lindsey Lohans. I am a stylist and colorist not a plastic surgeon. I am on my feet for 8-10 hours a day with no breaks and no food. I deal with some of the clients who think they know more about hair than I do and try to tell me how to do my job and then they can not grasp the idea that this or that will just not work on them. I deal with the people who think they know everything there is to know about coloring there own hair (including stylists who are taking my color classes) and beg me to stay after hours or come in on my day off to fix it for them! But you know what I love my job and all the stressfull aspects of it and wouldn't trade it for the world! Afterall when I am done showing them new ideas and fixing their mistakes I am a hero to them!!!!!!

Hi I'm new here and i love the show. I think its more of a "I love that cut and colr that she has," and "Damn why can't I find someone to do my hair like that." I have wavy hair, that falls above my shoulders. I like to color it a light brown for the summer and I normally cut it short for the hot days, but I'm really trying to let it grow. I love the volume and length that Rosie has, But I would have to flat iron it everyday to get it that way. Any suggestions, because I'm ready to make an appointment this weekend at a real hair salon, rather than my regular Hair cuttery cuts. Not that there is anything wrong with Hair cuttery, I've been going there for years and my "stylist" is good.

Hey..
I've actually been trying to figure out the same thing about Jonathon's products! I can't figure out where to go or how to get them without paying retail!-- I do hair in Southeast TX and to be honest I do not think any of our supply houses carry his stuff- I've heard on the show that 'sephora' carries it- but no idea on prices..
OH and I was reading that someone asked about Keira's hair extentsions.. I think shes using some form of fusion?? Maybe that was a big fat DUH on my part- but I've been looking into learning how to do it- and theres a company called UltraTresses that seems to be similar to what she uses. But do not quote me cause obviously I'm in a whole other part of the country! LOL

Hi JustTzuIt, Love the screen name BTW!
Now back to your hair....so normal conditioners "grease" you out, and you seem to have a problem with dryness, humidity not a factor, and that the Pert 2-in-1 type products seem to work well for you. It sounds as though you have fine to almost medium type hair, moisture attracts moisture so this is why you get that "greased" out feeling and look. The dryness is not so much a true dryness meaning lacking moisture, as it is a "rough" cuticle or open cuticle, probably from the blow dryer. The reason the Pert is working for you is it is actually "drying" your hair whle helping to smooth the cuticle down, this is usually because these types of products contains Sulfanted Oils. Sulfanted Oils will remove artificial color, like what you get at the salon or out of a box, and can even "streak" natural pigment even if you don't color your hair. They are also very drying to the skin, so I would suspect your head may be itching a bit.
So what to use? A light detangler is what you are looking for, there are several on the market and everyone will have their favorite a couple of suggestions would be Redken's Clear Moisture line it's very light, Schwarkopt has the OSIS+ smoothie light conditioner. Also we should take into account that most people when using a conditioner start at the scalp and work through to the ends...however in the salons stylists will work from the ends to almost the scalp with conditioner. So when using a conditioner just use on the ends and work up towards your scalp, it doesn't take alot of conditioner and make sure you rinse out completely.
Look for heat activated styling products as these will have ingredients that will help smooth the cuticle while protecting the hair from the dreeded "frying" effect.
ENJOY

What a whiny little jerk that was criticizing Kiara for nursing her daughter at work!!! I wonder if he knows that she could technically sue the daylights out of Jonathan for being harrassed at work for that. Doesn't that prissy little twit ever read a newspaper?!? I have never seen Kiara be nasty to anyone but many of them are so spiteful toward her I assume because Jonathan likes her and thinks she is great. What jealous little children they are all behaving like. Especially his chubby former assistant who was so bent out of shape that Kiara took her baby to NYC. Don't any of them realize they were once children? Most of them are still acting like they are. Perhaps if their mothers had shown them more love (i.e. nursed them) they wouldn't be so hostile!

I don't know where you could get a pic, but please if you get that cut DO AWAY WITH THE THUNDERBANGS! I recommend getting your hair dyed a solid color all around then adding highlights if you want them only to the rest of your hair and not your bangs. The cut he did was great, but with the highlights in her bangs, it sets it off and makes your whole head look fried.

For anyone that has asked about the product line, I have tried three things- The Leave-In Conditioner/Glossing Cream, the Thickening Foam, and the Gloss Serum.
Honestly, I have horrible hair that I threaten to shave off everyday. I didn't expect Johnathan Product to be any different than any other product I've used in the past. My hair is thin, plus each hair is fine. It's that kinky curl...not a perfect curl, but not straight, so it's best style is when it's past my shoulders, with a few layers, and "scrunched". Straightening absolutely requires an iron and then it looks even more flat and nasty than when I scrunch it. I have tried every mousse, gel, hairspray, and product out there...my mom is a hairstylist so I have access to anything I want to try, but I have to say, the items I picked up at Sephora were FANTASTIC. I have "babe" hair now! My flat, yucky, blah hair is now full, with perfect waves, and looks as if I have double the amount of hair. And the best part....it holds all day!!! It doesn't fall flat!! I can't wait to try the curling serum to see what it does to my hair when I scrunch it, but for now, I am happier about my hair than I've ever been.
I haven't checked to see if my mom can get the products for me at the supply store for a better price, but even if she can't, I'll pay full price for every product without complaint.
One hint....The only day my hair did not turn out as well was when I didn't use as much product. I was afraid of using too much and having my hair turn out horrible, but now that I've been using it regularly, I have found that I can use a significant amount without worry.

I just wanted to say that I got hooked on this show from the start, and initially found this man, owner, "dude" without depth or merit.
I have since changed my mind. Regardless of the fact that I STILL don't think him to be the sharpest tack in the pack, he has certainly worked hard for everything he has, and nobody handed him one bit of it. I think that is where a lot of this big fat fake attitude comes from, and from being insecure.

I have to congratulate you on practicing throughout the downtime of school!! I am a cosmetology teacher and I see this happening a lot. What I can say to you right now, market yourself. Even though you're not in a salon yet, this is only the beginning. Take your business cards and hand them out to everyone. When you're at a restaurant and you go to leave a tip, leave a business card with the tip. You'll be surprised at how many people you can actually pull in and then watch them follow you to a salon. I'll be honest, it's tough building a clientele...that's why I say start working on it now. Keep practicing on that mannequin too...the more you do, the better you'll be. Hang in there and good luck!

I am so glad you asked this. I've been wondering the same thing. I see it at sephora, but I'm not so sure about buying the product from there. It's just like Sebastian, what a great product when we had it in the salon, but who wants to use it when you can buy it at grocery stores? I've even looked online, but I'm still a bit unsure about purchasing it..

Thanks!! thats such a good idea! I have a cute razor pixie cut and I have strangers come up to me daily to ask who does my hair. I find its a great opener for giving them my business card. Since I'm a student, I just made some business cards to hand out to people. My roommate works at a large firm and she has referred several people to see me at school. The only bad thing with that is, I'm constantly having people come into the salon to ask for me, and I feel like maybe somtimes people in the school get mad at me for doing that. But .. this business is what you make of it, and I'm out to learn all I can and to build clientele as much as possible. Its hard b/c in the school when I have people come in to request me, the people working the counter are so rude to them. The clients often times ask if I can do their hair at home instead, and its so hard to say no when you know they'll pay you. *sighs *

Hello:
I live near San Francisco in the east bay. And I'm a 20 year old male and I want to attend beauty school starting this Aug.
But my question is does it matter whic hschool you attend? I have a school near me called Paris beauty college, but I just want a school that will teach me all that I need to know...I mean I know you need to go to other means of education to learn great color and style.
But there is this school in San Francscio called the Paul Michell beauty school, its much more money like 15k. So do you think I should attend Paris, which is only 5k and is 15mins away from me, or go to PM which is 45 mins away and 15k. Which will give me a better oppertunity and education? And when i go to apply for salons in LA when i move down there, will the school i go to matter at all? Or will it be the way I color and style and personality?
Thanks!

Hey! I've been in school since January and so far what I've learned and from what I've found out by asking others... no matter what beauty school you go to, they teach you the basics to pass state board. Save your money and go to the 5k school b/c right now I'm having to pay 10k and am learning the same things as the school down the street that costs less.
You will learn more once you graduate and work under someone more experienced than you in the field and as you take furthering education classes. Everyone I have asked says you learn more once you're out on the salon floor (scary huh?). haha
Some people do like to go to the name brand schools though, unfortunately here in SC we don't have a Tony and Guy school or PM or even an Aveda school, so I just picked one. I suggest calling around to both places, asking to interview with a student or two, and maybe even asking a few stylists in town where they went and what they were able to get out of their experience.

I would love get a style. I have long hair and I am ready for a vibrant layered change. I love to use hot rollers but there are days I don't have time and need to pull it back. Saying this as a mom of 3 I am pretty busy at times. My husband is a Soldier, and ofcourse we don't have alot of money to spare for me to get a style. I want to go to a salon but when I take a picture they look at me and shake their head and hand me a dull 80s book! I want layers I want vibrant and bouncy and layered at the face...ya know the in style cuts!
Could you possibly reccomend a magazine or a link to todays long layered styles that can actually be understood by other hairdressers? Or does Jonathon have a photo gallery?
