Hi Gang, I hope you don't mind if I combine many responses in one post...smile.gif

Spoilmeblonde..smile.gif Thanks, and you are welcome for the info! Isn't it crazy sometimes? Clients know what they DON'T want us to do at the same time they don't know what the DO want us to do. The reason for this is because somewhere they have had a bad experience with "layers" or with "bleaching" etc... and therefore think that the outcome will be the same when we mention these words, as stylists we need to find this out, real easy to do, when a client says I DON'T want this or that...immediately ask if they have had bad results because of that and what happened, not from what the other stylist did, but rather how their hair reacted to the cut or color. Then...turn it around and say by doing this your hair will "RESPOND" with more volume, brighter shine, more movement etc...REACTION is bad, RESPONSE is good. If we go to the doctor and he/she gives us medicine the doc will ask how has your body RESPONDED, or we tell the doc "I've had an allergic REACTION"...get it? COOL!

VELVET...I would love to work with you to create the style you want! Although I'm not in OHIO, live in Atlanta, I do travel to Ohio and as a matter of fact I will be up there at the end of Sept to train a group of salon educators. Maybe we can work something out, I'll know more specifically where in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time...long/baby fine hair that won't hold a curl solution: using a volumizing spray gel..Redken's Body Full Plump spray would be my suggestion..flip your head over comb everthing towards the floor and spray only at the scalp, spray about three pumps in your hand and run through you hair from scalp to ends, blow dry with your hair flipped over, at the scalp only, when the scalp is dry flip back to stand straight up and completely dry the rest of your hair, no brush, no comb and don't pull with your fingers...this will look WILD, smile at the mirror and think back to the days of Motley Crue and Whitesnake....now use a curling iron taking various sections of hair about 1-2 inches thick and wide and twist roll the section ON the curling iron, not rolling the iron from the ends to the scalp as we would typically do, once finished use a Humidity resistant light spray, Shaper Zero G would be my suggestion. Here's the tough part...DON'T run your hands through your hair during the day! This puts oil from your hands into you hair weighin your hair down and helping to make it frizzy.

JustTzujit...you have a GREAT opportunity! If I could suggest one thing, instead of "adding" Haircolor specialist to your list...make it a priority. Be a "sponge" and set your goal at being the BEST! Surround yourself and seek out the best of what you want to be...I studied, took every available class and sometimes worked with people who are considered the BEST in the hair industry...Beth Minardi, Roy Peters (who taught me basic haircolor back in the day and I consider a good friend and stay in touch with to this day), Chris and Sonya Dove, and several others. Being the BEST is not about EGO...it's about knowing you've POSITIVELY IMPACTED someone's life so THEY can grow, become the BEST and pass it on.

LOL...I love the question "Are you as hot as J?"

I'd like to think hotter than J...ROFL, but I guess that's my perception...and you know what they say perception is reality! Just joking...picture this, although I have tat's they don't go past short sleeves unlike J's and I'm taller than J, think Jason, the blonde from NYC, with a little more tone, more tan and little longer hair kinda like Owen Wilson in the Wedding Crashers.

I have a question
I dont do hair
My baby she's 8 has the fullest head of hair you have ever seen
I took her for her first hair cut about 16 months ago
The girl cutting it talked her into going shorter than we discussed
They told her they would send the hair to locks for love
Did they cause she wont let me cut it again till she hits 10 inches very very soon
Do they really use that hair for kids with Cancer?
You see she's almost there and she plans to keep doing it
She's my hero you see someone so small trying to help the world
Just someone tell me thats where its really going

and if it is applaud her

You should applaud her! Great kid! Yes, Locks of Love is in fact what you were told. For detailed information go to:

http://www.locksoflove.org/

If you aren't sure the particular stylist is sending her hair to them, well that's another matter. But Locks of Love is a real organization, a wonderful one in fact. I know several women that have grown their hair past their butts and had it all cut off for LOL.

Hug your daughter and hug yourself. How terrific a mother you must be to have such a young child wanting to help others in so significant a way. :-)

WELLLLLL lol ya can't blame a girl for tryin. Hubby said it was ok with him just so I'm back by Monday morning! lol. Ok now back to the hair, is there any kind of brushes that you can recommend for my hair? I have tried everything and they all seem to make my hair so fly away. It's waist long and very fine and a virgin to any kind of dyes. I only get low lights and thats it. Anything you can suggest to me would be great! I ordered Jonathans thickening foam and volume shampoo should get it today in fact so I'm gonna try the little trick you gave me on brushing my hair, I can't wait! I have spend sooo much money on hair products trying to find the right one. So far Jonathans products have been the best I have found.

Hello,Im brand new to this discussion board.I actually dont use theses often ,so please, be patient.I am writing in hopes that lots of amazing hairstylists might be watching and can ,#1, help me find a stylist in my area.(I'm in the Bay Area and desperately need cut and color) and ,2,I am on the look out for the mecca of hair style sites.Im trying very hard to find some pictures of amazing hair(for ideas on new looks for myself and other),but all the sites out there have ugly, boring, photos of hair that I wouldnt be caught dead in.None of these sites has anything high fashion. You know, cutting edge, runway looks,or even retro styles.I really love the look of the 40s with the Veronica Lake peekaboo style, the marcelling of the 30s,Bettie Page vampy hair, and a lot of the haute couture shows, with the wild, bright, hair of Johhn Galliano and Alexander Mcqueen. That's also what I seek in a stylist. If anyone has any leads for either or both of my questions ,please,I need your help!LOL I see also there are a lot of you who need clients,we're out there.I'm stil loooking for that perfect stylist(Im also a fashion desgner and am always on the look out for the stylist who will work with me on my up comning shows and who is on my wavelength and loves doing hair as much as I love desgning clothing.)I hope to hear from you. Thanks so much!

Yes they really do use that hair to make wigs for people with cancer, it is a wonderful cause, what a marvelous loving child you have!! Awww such a sweetheart!!

LOL...ok back by Monday it is then!

Hairbrushes...tricky subject but here goes...I use three types of brushes, Denman for slick, smooth styles (think the 70's-80's brush with the plastic bristles and the pink base), a Maryanne brush with both plastic and natural bore bristles, (this is not a cheap brush), and then a natural bore bristle brush. I do not use the nylon bristle brush, some stylists do I just prefer not too.
For baby fine hair I would suggest the natural bore bristle.
When blow drying, over direct the hair straight up and then roll down towards the scalp applying heat at the scalp first, when rolling the brush out of the hair keep "spinning" the brush on the ends of the hair while drying with the cold shot button on your dryer and this should help prevent the "fly aways".

Thanks Velvet, I need to hire you for my PR work!

Hi Harlow...going by your screen name I can totally see you in the whole Veronica Lake, Bettie Page thing! Any of your formal designs I would imagine an Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth style.
So you need a stylist? When you say Bay area I take it as San Fran and not Tampa? Forgive me Tampa's on my coast so here Tampa is also reffered to as the bay area, and I have friends that are stylists in both that are what you are searching for, so if you wouldn't mind confirming which bay area so I know who to contact.
As far as site for "amazing hair ideas" here it is, this is for the North American Hairstyling Awards or NAHA that most stylists cherish as our "mecca" of achievement.

www.oneroof.org/naha/main.html

Everthing from makeovers to avandt guarde in the world of hair is here as is the best of the best hairstylists in the world, with awesome pictures, this is not for the "hair faint of heart" and not everyone will appreciate the hair here, but I have a feeling you will.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

I used to think he had a hair piece but now I'm not so sure. They have been showing alot of close-ups of his hair lately and him in the shower *sighhhh* oh yea back to the hair lol and it doesn't look like it now. And hes always pulling on it, I would think it would come off. He would look good even if he is bald, hes just plain HOTTTT !

hello! i'm new here. i just stared watching jonathan and find it quite interesting and somewhat entertaining. i did wonder if jonathan had an african americans working for him and haven't seen him/her on the show. i'm also interested in knowing just how well his products would be for african american hair.

i'm african american and go to a white salon for my hair trims/cuts. the woman i use does a wonderful job. i just explain what i want and i get it. if she ever retired, i'd be at her home for service. ;-) and yes, i am extremely picky about who touches my hair.

but to answer your question, if i did live in beverly hills i would not go to jonathans. too much money for a basic wash, cut/trim, style. however, i'm willing to try his products.

as for learing to do all types of hair in school, you may be taught it, but i find that many are not necessarily willing to learn it.
Quote:

ok people first of all how many black people live in beverly hills in the first place? and how many would go to what they would consider a "white salon" in the first place? most african americans are very picky about where they get there hair done its usually word of mouth or someone they know where they feel comfortable in, and as far as multicultural one of the first things i learned in hair styling school is you have to learn to do all types of hair no matter what color you are

Jonathan was on QVC on Friday. One of his models was an African-American woman. Her hair had not been chemically straightened that I could tell, so she had sort of ringlets just past her jaw line. Don't quote me on this, but I believe he said he used the Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, the Create Motion styling gel, and I want to say he used Dirt on hers because seems he said he'd used it on all the models.

Good luck finding any product unless you can go into a Sephora store. QVC and Sephora.com are pretty well sold out of everything right now! Barney's of New York carrys some of the line, but their shipping is TOO EXPENSIVE!

I am watching right now and cannot believe that J does not know about water softener systems. It is very commonly used for regular average homes.

Did anyone else instantly think of Kramer and his obsession with creating a garbage disposal in his shower when Jonathan was foaming at the mouth about his shower water filter?

I watched him on QVC the other night talking about all of his products and he had an African American lady there that was just beautiful, had wonderful hair, gorgeous curls, and before picture she was very very frizzy and the after picture he had used his product that is the conditioner gel mixed together shoot I cant think of the name of it but it was awesome what it did for her hair. I had wondered prior to this show if his products were for all hair or just everyone but African American, which alot of lines do offer both, and according to what this product did yeah I think his line does.

I ordered his products on QVC about a month ago!!! Awesoome!! I love the shampoo and conditioner, haven't tried the DIRT yet!! Love the product~I wanted to try them~I'm a stylist as well!! Love Sescie, she seems like a sweetie and it was good to see some action at West Hollywood with Olivier and Bobby!! Bobby you're a cutie!! Well. they all are!! Where's Brandon? From last season? Anyone out there know??

Hi I'm new here, but have been watching BlowOut since it first started. Actually Jonathan really needs to appreciate the sylists that he has and realize that they are helping him make his salons successful. He needs to show more of their work and give credit to whom credit is due......and drop the bad attitude, it stinks!!

I am starting a new job tomorrow (July 20, 2005) at the Black Hills Harley Davidson Dealer in Rapid City, SD. Rapid City is 20 min. from Sturgis, SD, the GRANDDADDY OF ALL THE BIKE RALLYS IN THE WORLD, & the rally in Sturgis starts up on the 1st weekend in Aug. each year. Millions of Harleys make the way to Sturgis for this week long event. I start work for the rally next week, & I want a long-layer hair cut (just like the one Mr. Antin invented). Can you help me with any info or a website that can give me anything about this cut I love & want to be sporting yesterday! Please reply w/any info..thanks a bunch...CeCe

He wasn't talking about the water softener systems. He was talking about a water purifier, basically the shower head equivalent of a Brita filter like one puts on their kitchen sink. Considering the garbage coming out of my shower, if it's not obscenely expensive, I'd grab up one in a minute. Our water is horrible and even the water softener systems don't help.

For those naysayers among you, the filter development is apparently underway. They mention it on the Jonathan Product website. They've also added salon information including contact information for scheduling an appointment with Jonathan or the other stylists (for certain people that seem to think the salons are just TV sound sets.... ).

Yeah! The one year I was in cosmetology class (interpreting not taking the class) the teacher repeated again and again--no combs in the mouth, if a comb drops to the floor (another thing I've seen J and his staff do) DON'T pick it up and for sure don't reuse it!

Yep, that was a little unsettling to see Jonathan sticking the combs in his mouth. Love ya, Jonathan, but a little hygiene is in order please! I'd have to have a word or five with my stylist if I saw her pull that one!

I MUST know - does anyone know the names of the designers of the sunglasses that Jonathon wears? I know he has several pairs, but if anyone knows specifically, please help. I have been looking at glasses by Versace and I think I've found one pair specifically that Jonathon has. There is also a Gucci pair. Both were worn on the season two finale. Thanks!

Look, it's pretty common knowledge that if one is able to do so, breastfeeding is the best for a baby. But I do believe that a little discretion should be used. Technically, Jonathan should make a place available for Kiara. If there isn't one and she must use the break room, then politely turn her back, cover up lightly and feed the baby. It just seems like poor taste to sit there, boob hanging out and make it seem like it is perfectly okay. That's verging on exhibitionism. I've seen way too many women who breastfeed in public, boob hanging out and the baby is fast asleep. You mean, she can't feel that the baby is no longer feeding and basically she's on display? Please remember women have been breastfeeding forever; no one is any more special about it. Also, criticize an attitude or what is said; lay off what someone looks like, "Chubby former assistant" . What does that have to do with anything? NO ONE IS PERFECT.

Thanks!
BeccaTA
Lordofhair, you seem to be the go-to guy for general hair info and seem to know a lot of professionals around the states----can you give me an idea of where to find the best stylist/colorist between Biloxi and New orleans? Maybe someone who can manage that 'signature cut' of JA?

(holding my breath in anticipation while hiding my poorly cut badly colored hair under a hat)

Hi Lordofhair, it's me again! I was looking at the magazine you mentioned in another post, the NAHA? Oh my gosh, there is a haircut I would love to have in there but not sure how it would be with fine hair. I haven't cut my hair in 7 yrs (only trimmed) and it's 21 inches long, but If I thought I could get that cut and have it look like that I would do it. I think it's very hot and sassy looking and I absolutely loveee it! I clicked on NAHA Finalist and then Haircolor. It's the Cynthia Butler picture where she has dark hair with burgandy highlights. If you get a chance maybe you could look at it and give me your opinion? Do you think it would look good? And how long does your hair have to be to donate it to Locks of Love? I've been wanting to do this for quite sometime but have never found a cut and style that I liked. I don't want that color of course, I want to keep my blond hair, but I would sure love the cut.

Lordofhair
Hey Becca,

I have a good friend that is in Metaire, LA that I beleive can help you out. If I could suggest one thing, I wouldn't ask for the "signature cut" of JA...it's a long layered cut where from ocipital bone down is cut to determine the length and then the top and sides are sectioned from center front to center back ending at the ocipital, combed down and around to the front and cut with 45 degree finger angle. However, knowing Kevin....he more than likely watches the show anyway.

Here is the information:

Champagne and Company
Kevin Champagne ( National Artist and who you need to see)
202 Old Hammond Hwy.
Metairie, LA 70005
504-835-1307 salon number

I'll actually see him in three weeks, but if you speak to him tell him Christian says hello!

ENJOY:)
Lordofhair
Velvet it's getting close to another weekend. LOL

That is a great cut and style! So let's walk this through...judging by the style, three things probably standout to you:
1. Movement of the hair.
2. The lenght
3. "flickiness" of the ends (technical term flickiness)

Can this work on fine hair? It can, yet you need to ask yourself are you willing to style it everyday? If not this might not be the right style for you.

It looks as though it's two cuts in one...underneath is razored to add texture and build volume at the scalp, the top looks to be dropped over and layering towards the face...think Dorothy Hamil meets Joan Jett. The Dorothy TYPE, not exact, cut underneath and the layering and length of Joan Jett.

Not seeing your hair, I would suggest that although you have fine hair, if it's A LOT of hair then go for it! One precaution, search for a stylist that has a portfolio of HIS/HER work, not a "look book" of pictures taken from a magazine, but their actual work, and look specifically at cuts that are razored. Can this cut be done without a razor? Sure it can.

For locks of love your hair needs to not have been colored or any chemical treatments such as perm etc... and it must be at least 10 inches in length. It's a great foundation, for a great cause and you'll have a new look yourself!

ENJOY

I'm sure the answer is one that will make me smack my forehead and say "well, duh!" but why does the hair have to be unprocessed? I would think that LoL would be thrilled to get anyone's hair considering the need. Thanks!
BeccaTA
Thank you LOH. Hopefully I can get there in early August--most likely take my daughter later. All of the better stylists closer to home have left--It seems that people wanted Hollywood hair (or New York hair) and only wanted to pay truck stop prices for it (in effect starving the better people with better product and talent out).
Lordofhair
LOL...not to make you go "duh" GV...think of hair as a fabric, it's worn (styled with different products and appliances), shampooed (washed), and exposed to environmental contimanents. If the hair is chemically treated with color or perms, it won't stand up to the process of bleaching (to kill any and all germs) the re-coloring process, and the sewing process of making the actually wig.

The majority of the natural hair wigs are actually Asian hair and there are Asian women who specifically grow their hair for wig manufacturing. Although Persian hair is starting to be used for wigs with more texture. The reason is because Asian hair is very durable to go through the entire wig making process. Not any NATURALLY blonde, red or platinum Asians walking around.

ENJOY!
GrayVioliner
Actually, no "duhs" here. I didn't know what was involved in wig making (thank heavens I've never needed one!!), so that makes perfect sense! Thanks!

I work at a shop where alot of us use plastic clipper guards(I do alot of free hand tapering myself but that's why I have more requests .lol) But recently a woman started who is using oster clippers with the metal attachments. She's gotten alot of complaints that it seems much shorter than the others stylists cuts more of a 2 than a 4 but I had similar complaints years ago too! When I checked sites it says the lengths are comparable but by eying it it does seems shorter. What do you think of that? That's part of the reason I've shied away from the oster clippers. Now granted the woman is grating and annoying and maybe she's just irritating the clients before she even starts however I do know that she has all of the lengths of guards as I've looked at the numbers and they say the number 3 is comparable to 1/2 inch. Have you ever noticed this problem?

Hi peeps out there!!! I'm Naomi
As the tittle of my post says, i'm desperate looking for a screencap, vidcap, picture or something of the haircut that Jason Low did to the waitress in episode 3 (season 1). I totally adore it! and i was thinking about having my hair like that.

If anyone knows where to find or has any picture of it (as well as similar haircuts) your help will be really appreciated!.

Hey Fool!...that just sounds sorta weird typing it, of course you could have a lot of fun with it, I was thinking of the show Sandford and Son and aunt Ethyl always calling Fred a "fish-eyed old fool!" Sorry just kinda went there for a moment.

Back to the oster clippers...There are two types of electric clippers, the motor driven clippers with detachable blades and the magnetic motor driven clippers with one blade and using numbered guards. In reading your post you say you compared numbered guards so we are dealing with the magnetic motor clippers with a permanent blade. Guards from various manufacturers are funny, some say that the 1/2 inch is from the blade of the clipper while others consider the 1/2 inch from the guard meaning what's left on the head is actually closer to 3/4 to an inch of hair, the later is most common. The guards she is using apparently are considering a 1/2 inch from the blade. That's why when you "eyeball" the guard it appears shorter

Props to you for doing more free hand tapers, this is a visual art and knowing your tools, most stylists rely on the guards TOO much.

My guess is, her clipper movement is following the the head shape (round) and not doing a reverse "C" motion to actually taper the hair and not changing her clipper movement with the change in directions and the areas of the head form.

Short answer to your question...it sounds as though it's a combination of technique used by the stylist along with the guard itself.

If you are thinking..what's better the motor driven or the magnetic motor?...in my humble opion, the motor driven with detachable blades hands down. I've never replaced my motor driven clippers, magnetic I had to all the time.

Sorry I didn't PM my response Fool, but someone may have had a similiar question and I wanted them to be able to see it also.

ENJOY!
