Yep, Martina that is exactly it! Think about if the hair is combed straight down...if we overdirect vertically (straight up from it's combed down position) and cut it we will get soft subtle layers that blend rather than if we were to comb the hair straight out and cut where we get more of the "step" type of layers. If we overdirect back and cut, we still get a layering effect but we will also leave length. Think of an "A-line bob" that is short in the back and gradually gets longer as it falls towards the face. The same is true when blowdrying to acheive an effect, blowdry the opposite way in which we want it to fall, thereby creating more movement. Even if we want smooth straight hair, then it's a matter of keeping it flat to the head shape as we blowdry giving us the "Kelly Ripa swing". Feel free to send me the pic at my screen name on this board at aol dot com. I think you can figure that out, as will most that read this post, I just didn't want too many emails when a message board is easier to reach the masses.
ENJOY

Hey Velvet, so here's the deal I spoke via email to my frined in Dublin OH, her name is Deborah McCann, she is an American Board Certified Colorist (very hard to obtain, she knows her stuff) and she is looking forward to you contacting her.
the salon is McCann and Company
and the number is 614-766-0355.
Tell her Christian said hey!

Lordofhair, Thanks sooo much!! You are a godsend I've tried twice to get ahold of her but I guess she's extremely busy. I will keep trying. I think Dublin is close to Cincinatti which is about 5hrs from me, so not sure if I can make it before my trip. Maybe I can work something out with her. Did you happen to mention the cut that I wanted? I can send her the pic if she wants it. As far as the cut goes. I have to wear my hair pulled back alot because I teach areobics 3 times a week. I like the way its feathered towards the face and Im thinking it would look good pulled back leaving the front towards my face. I know you said it would be high maintence, but I spend 45 mins every morning anyways just to blow dry it, so this might even be easier, what do you think? You also said if my hair was colored I couldn't send it to Locks of Love, well I've only had lowlights done, does that matter? Can you tell I'm scared to get my hair cut? lol I haven't been able to cut it in 7 yrs (only trimmed) because I can't trust anyone. But, I think it's time for a change and I'm ready for a sassy look! And besides, I trust your judgement! Let me know your ideas, I always look forward to your endless wisdom

Hi Velvet, yeah she is usually busy, but keep trying, she is looking forward to speaking with you. I did mention the cut that you are looking for, I do not know if she went to the NAHA website to actually view the design though. I think that if you are to pull this back in a ponytail, that you would have pieces, mainly the fringe to the corners of your eyebrows that won't be able to be pulled back into the ponytail. However, that would still look great, it would just be a mater of if you can handle that when you are teaching areobics. It will definately help with the blowdry time and cut it down to around 20 minutes probably. WHich I'm sure you will love.
Lowlights is still color, makes no difference if their highlights, lowlights, somewhere in between, henna, whatever... it's still color. You could still give it to Locks of love, but I really don't think they would be able to use it because of the process, colored hair just can't withstand it.
You're not scared....just concerned and I understand completely. Always remember this...ON THE OTHER SIDE OF FEAR IS FREEDOM! You're scared to get it cut now, but think how fantastic you'll look with a new style, how much time you'll save in styling, and most importantly how different you'll FEEL as a new you emerges. you haven't really cut your hair in 7 years, which means 4 distinctive looks and trends have come and gone. With this design you will be ahead of the curve and actually be a "trendsetter" with the design that many will want and try to copy!
ENJOY!

Hi Velvet, I long time ago I used to have really long hair and then I went to a salon to get it cut. Boy was I nervous, but the lady that cut my hair told me that I could donate my hair for that charity that LOH mentioned a while back. It made me feel so much better that my hair was going to somebody that needed it and wasn't going to be swept up in the trash. The Cut ran around $60.00, but it was well worth it. Now I'm growing it back again because I missed having long hair.
I know I'm fickle.

I've got some bad news. I'll be off line for a while because my hubby and I are moving. The place we're living in now has been sold and is being redone as condos, and if you want to buy your unit they're asking for $200,000. Is that sick or what? My husband and I can't afford that, but the good news is my husband and I found a place to live and we're getting ready to move. God I hate moving.

I posted lots for season 1. Without Jen & Brandon; I found the show somewhat boring. I was surprised that Jen left. She was seemed very dedicated to Mr. Antin in spite of their differences over her not doing trade/fashion shows that involved fur & leather etc. (Jen was a PETA/GreenLoving type person). She was totally opposite the wild and mega talented Brandon! Yet both of these excellent stylists are out the door of Salon J.
As for Brandon; I am delighted to report that the Beauty Editor of W, the flagship fashion magazine (the one that is even snootier than Vogue or Harpers) of Conde-Nast listed Brandon Martinez as Best New Stylist for 2005! (or that equivalent, she also listed other make-up artists & aesthticians). It was not an ad. Brandon has also been staring in Trade Shows for various product lines in Los Vegas. He did a major studio movie in Europe right after season 1 was over. Brandon also had a beautiful baby boy, the mother was that georgeous blond model w/an awesome a-symetrical cut shown early in Season I. He is working in the swanky Brentwood area; close to Bev.Hills. He gets $400/cut (when available).
I have no doubt Jonathin will have his 15 minutes of fame & megabucks on QVC or HSN. That is a perfect venue for him!
I have to say I did get to see more of Jonathin's work & found it very flat. Old bed-head look that Tony & Guy were doing five years ago! They looked like droopy angel cuts. The models were beautiful; so the hair looked better than it would have on average woman. His haircuts are high maintenance. I have nothing against high-styling; but his waves were tight -- in some cases giving even those beautys a dowdy look.
Why he is going into Beauty School Business beats me. That is one way to loose money fast! Look at how quickly they come & go! I guess it feeds into Season III & when Revlon, who it appears wants to compete w/Este Lauder for a bigger slice of "hair care market" (Lauder owns both Aveda & Bumble & Bumble); it will give Mr. Pearlman a tax break!
Maybe Jonathin less creative as stylist because focus was on his emerging product line. I find the salon experience lots more interesting than marketing a product. Perhaps Season III will feature guest artists who will teach at Jonathin Acadamy & viewers will see better work showcased!
Jon Boy will have his following of tourists and insecure women who are as attached to their "angel" dos as I was once attached to my big bouffants! How I shed a tear when my favorite stylist put down his teasing comb & opened a uni-sex salon back in 1970.
But then I moved to larger city & saw how beautiful shags, percision & dramatic Sassoon cuts could be! I wore my hair like Jens back in college. Guys just loved to look at beautiful layering & run their fingers through it. Now, I switch between my RuPaul moods (even tho drag cabaret not as popular) & keep my old chins covered in a long Goldie Hawn shag. How I would love to add some blueberry extensions!
So, after one year, Brandon the Darling of powerful beauty editors & Jonathin has his loyal following gobbeling up his new product. I hope someday, when Mr. Antin runs into Brandon at a big trade show; he will be man enough to apologize for his nasty, personal comments & shake the hand of a talented man. In all the press I've seen on Brandon (there is quite a bit), he has NEVER said a nasty thing about Antin, except to infer that we can't expect to get along with everyone. BTW, we all should thank Brandon's family. He has, I believe 3 siblings serving in Iraq! Does it ever occur to Mr. Antin that the people he slams are somebody's husbands, fathers, sons & daughters?
If anyone knows what happened to Jen, I'd be interested in hearing! She also deserves a happy ending.

Jenn moved on to bigger and better (and another network). http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/10yearsy...o/bio_jenn.html
I'll bet there's a story around her leaving Jon Boy. He was waaaay too civil and unemotional in his mention of her leaving during the opener of Season 2.

Iola, u r not obligated 2 go 2 family member. Sometimes it works out better not 2 mix business & family. Salon time should b a fun self-indulgent thing.
Find yourself somebody u really like. If your relative says something; be very kind -- compliment them on their work, even if it is slightly a fib -- but explain that u want your beauty experience to be a really private, self indulgence. I hope u go to somebody real respected in your area, then your relative will feel less personally insulted!

U r very lucky! The great Oribe has just expanded his lux salon in South Beach! (the art deco district of Miami Beach). He is one of country's best stylists; especially for updo's & hair for that night/event when u really want to look special! He had one of NYC's leading salons for many years; but so many modeling shoots take place in So. Beach, now. He is best known for doing Jo-Lo. He has appeared in many important fashion spreads (the end-middle pages in Vogue & Harpers that are not ads). His staff is highly qualified! The Yellow Strawberry also had very good reputation & has been around in Florida a while. In Palm Springs, if u feel like going for a ride, Frederic Fekai -- also one of leading USA stylists has opened a salon in Four Seasons or is it the Ritz? Cosmo in Palm Beach does stunning work & has worked on British aristocracy. His staff is booked a year in advance, I hear, so good luck getting in, but u could get in waiting list! I always enjoyed my getaways to Palm Beach.

Boing: U put it very well. Heroin chic is one way of describing what he does. Same old, same old. I don't think Calvin Kline would have hired him. That is difference between B.H. & Manhattan. U have 2 cater to top clothing designers in NYC. Did u see the segment w/Derek Lamb? U would have loved it!

I guess I crossed over to "addicted" status last night by staying up until midnight to watch the Reunion show rather than waiting until tonight when it's on at 8:00 EDT. I'm sooooo sleepy!!!
It was interesting to watch the Q&A part of the show. Some of those questions could have been taken right off this bulletin board, especially the, "Is Jonathan really an a**hole, is he gay, is he as nasty a boss as he's portrayed and my personal favorite: "Is this real or scripted?" I'm a 50 year old woman with my eyes wide open and gave up being a groupie when I was 14, so I have no false illusions about any of this show. It's obvious the editing was creating a more interesting twist on things to keep viewers watching and talking, but it was equally obvious (and thanks to all for saying this on the air) that these folks are real and what you see is basically what you get (editing notwithstanding). Jonathan is a task master, but not without a heart. What's wrong with that?
While it was sweet that Jonathan proposed to Sescie on the show, I couldn't help but wonder how she felt about that. She seems a quiet, private young woman that would have preferred something like that be a more private moment. It was still sweet though.
I'm like some of the others though: I hope they run a few more seasons of Blow Out (at least until Project Runway cranks up again and I can indulge myself in that guilty pleasure again ).
<steps up on soapbox>
The products and those of you that feel inclined to bash them: put your money where your mouth is. Everything I've purchased is the best. My hair has never been better. Any product that can turn my dry, frizzy, curly mop into shiny, soft and defined curls has my loyalty!

Hi Panther, there are several salons in the area as "upscale" as J's...are you looking to work at one or be a client of one?
Although Frosty gave you a lot of names including Orbie who does have a salon in the south beach area, most of those mentioned should be considered "untouchable", meaning their primary roles are as salon owners and celebrity/photo stylists. If you are looking for a position with them, expect to go through a very intense audition/interview process just to get into the apprentice program...yes even if you are liscenced and have been doing it for years. Unless you have a name and experience as a platform artist for a major brand.
If you are looking to be a client...expect to spend, and don't be disappointed if one of their team members colors, designs and styles your hair with their direction.
The Yellow Strawberry has been around for years and is a good option. Their teams do a lot of photo work and can be found in the hair magazines for a sample of their work.
If I may suggest a few salons in the area that are accessible and upscale...for the celebrity flair if that is what you are looking for then two suggestions come to mind...Van Michaels Salon on Michagan Ave...see Cynthia Winston her clientele includes Lenny Kravitz, Maria Carry and many local celebs. Ugo DI Roma on Florida Ave is upscale, has celebrity cleintele...Massimo is expereinced stylist from Italy and worked at Richard Stien in NYC before moving to Miami.
Paula's Salon on Collins Ave is rated as one of the tops in the area for customer satisfaction, see Stefanie G.
Leon of London is also another good choice on South Brickel Blvd.
Hope this helps!
ENJOY!

Hey Grey; I dont beleive the show is scripted either. I do however beleive that the concept of this chat board, is audience analysis.Nothing wrong with that. Its great time tested marketing tool. The producers craft the show around audience participation and help steer JA to give the viewer what they want.Case in point.
JA's image really softened up btween seasons 1 and 2. If you were about to launch a new national product line for women, would you want JA from season 1 or season 2 to be your spokesperson? Its about appealling to a female demographic, through vicarious participation. How come,in one day,JA's unknown hair care products flew off the shelves at QVC and Sephora? Star power.charisma,(straight)sex appeal, magnetic personality. The products sold because the buyers wanted to feel a connection to JA. Thankfully the products turned out to be good.

I can't speak for the other Jonathan Product customers on that, but for me his "star power, charisma,(straight)sex appeal, magnetic personality" had nothing to do with my purchasing the products. As I said above, I gave up being a groupie when I was 14. Watching the series obviously made me aware of the product and with hair like mine, I'm always willing to try something new. Though I'd have never bought it any where that a money back guarantee wasn't offered. But that's me. I don't care how cute Jonathan Antin is. I work too hard for my money to blow it on "cute."

I also have fine hair, alot of it but baby fine. The Dirt is amazing and I highly recommend it! It's the first product that doesn't leave my hair greasy and weighted down. Just remember that a little dab will do ya, just a nickel size in palm of hand and rub it in hands first then run thru hair. I have also used the Thickening Foam, and the shampoo and conditioner. My hair has never looked so good, and my friends and family have all noticed it. I get lots of compliments from even strangers! I will never use anything else, I'm hooked! Yes, it's pricey, but considering the hundreds of dollars I have spent just trying to find something that works. it's well worth it! Plus your friends never have to wonder what to buy you for xmas and birthdays ! lol I have told them all! Hope you get a chance to use it, if you do let me know how you like it! If you purchase it from Sephora or QVC you have a money back guarantee, so nothing lost nothing gained.

You can get order it from WWW.QVC.COM, but there is a huge waiting list, or you can get it through WWW.SEPHORA.COM. Both of these have money back guarantees and Sehpora also has free shipping. If you get a QVC Q card you can make monthly payments . If you get it directly from www.jonathanproduct.com there is no guarantee. I really recommend you try them, they are awesome!

Highlife, I agree with Velvet on this go for it! Words of advice from someone that has been in the industry for awhile...don't "think" about it, if it's something you're interested in, see if you can work in a salon for a week or two, sweeping hair, shampooing, answering the phones whatever just to be in the environment, do this for no pay...the stylists will more than likely tip you out, but this will give you a feel to see if this is what you really want to do. And doing it for no money will give you a taste and an appreciation of what it's like in the begining as a stylist...this motivates most to promote themselves heavily and get out and meet people when they start in the business. Any apprentice I've ever had I started them for two weeks this way so they could have the experience and the feeling to draw from. Too many stylists get into this industry and then complain about not being busy and not having clients and what have they done to get them? Nothing except sit in their chair and complain in the backroom to other stylists about not being busy and the how the owner needs to advertise, basically they become a virius in the salon. On average it costs an owner $85 in advertising to attract ONE new client, what is a stylist who would rather wait going to do to keep them? The best stylists I know never waited for the clients they went out and got them.
Don't wait to go to school, go out and get it!
ENJOY!

I haven't been able to find anything that says what her due date is, but I understand they usually tape the shows about 3 months in advance of airing and the reunion show was probably thrown together in less time which would mean she's probably due in the Fall.
While searching for a due date, I ran cross several articles/blogs that mention Jonathan that were kind of amusing. Some of my favorites were:
“Inked (A&E, Wednesdays): Motocross champion Carey Hart (also doing reality time on VH1’s Surreal Life and as the future Mr. Pink) opens a tattoo shop in Las Vegas, hires a Colorful Crew and caters to both celebs and townies—it’s Blow Out with needles, but minus one major [expletive deleted] (that would be Jonathan Antin, who is *not* gay).”
“. . . . . the contemptible coiffeur Jonathan Antin . . .”
“Jonathan Antin the star of Bravo's completely addictive reality show about this Hollywood Hairdresser—sorry, I mean, stylist—to the stars, bursts into tears at least once an episode. Jonathan: I know you have have a girlfriend and you're continually yammering on about how much you love "hot chicks," but straight dudes (even those from LA) don't generally refer to adult women as "bunny rabbits" (unless they're talking about one of those easy Playmates). Now I'm not questioning your sexuality because of your chosen profession, but guys who feel a need to gas on about how straight they are as much as you do tend to be hiding a little something. I'm just saying that perhaps a little more self-awareness and a tad less denial could go a long way towards drying up the incessant waterworks.”

First off, let me start by saying, that i think Johnathan is a joke, Some of his stylists are much more talented than he is. He's str8?, give me a break, he's a flaming Queen.
He dropped out of High School, most states won't even give you a liscence unless you have at least a HS Ed.
For me, i have a BA Degree in Business Management.
I have been a liscenced stylist for the past 40 years, i have been a colorist for Redken and a platform artist for several top manufacturers.
I have been an Educational Director for a Cosmetology school and an educator for insalon classes.
I have also owne 3 hair salons.
I would love to check Johnathans works, LOL. I could cut style, color , you name it, better than he ever will.
He is all about Himself, such as the B Micahel show, he didn't care about what B micahel wanted, it was all about what Jonhathan wanted. he's a total ass. i can't see why anyone would ever want to work for this jerk.

Professional, did you look at the way they show up for work, sloppy clothes, hair a mess, LOL and does Johnathan ever really work or do something different besdise that same old tired layerd hair cut, he tells everyone he invented it, LOL, There are only 3 haircuts, a bob , a wedge and a layered cut, all the rest are combinations of one of the others or all three.

Sounds like your ego is about as big as his, yet he does have his own show product line and gonna make alot more money that you could ever dream of. He may be a jerk, but he knows what he wants and will take no less, nothing wrong with that. He's a perfectionist in everything he does, and is admired by all his stylist, so he's obviously doing something right! If he is gay (Im sure he isn't) WHOOO CARESSS??? This is 2005, it's no longer an issue and nobodys business. I have used his products and my hair has never looked so good, I will never use anything else.
With him not having a high school education makes me admire him even more. He's one of the few who has made it, how can you critize that?

Hey, I don't like Jonnie either but if you are going to throw your credentials around. You better start with your writing skills.

Morning VH. I was a bad girl this weekend and decided I'd ration my Jonathan Product by going back to my old shampoo/conditioner/styling products on the weekends. BIG MISTAKE!! My hair is protesting today in the way of big time FRIZZ! Hopefully one more day back with JP and it will be back to it's former perfect self. I guess I need to just toss the old line, take out a second mortgage on the house and stock up on JP when Sephora has it in stock. Speaking of which:
HEY SEPHORA!!! HEY QVC!!! YOU GUYS ARE LOSING A BUNDLE!
SOMEBODY GET THAT PLANT CRANKING OUT JONATHAN PRODUCT PLEASE!!!

This is an infomercial disguised as a TV show. I used to enjoy the show and put up with Johnny up until the reunion show. He took it over showing total disrespect to his sister the host. "It's my show, I'm going to ask the questions" and ripped the cards from her hands. When they announced they won an award for the packaging of the hair products. Johnny gets mad because HE wasn't going to NYC. "You knew about the trip to New York?" "It has my name on it." "We'll talk about this later." Are the viewers suppose to believe he had anything to do with the design---other than possibly approving it--didn't look like it on the show! He's had his 15 minutes of fame, he has shown himself (and hopefully this show does not stereotype all hairsylists) as being egotistical, self-centered, selfish, and definitely in need of therapy. BRAVO, please Blow Out Johnny's candle, feature a different hairstylist. With him I agree with the beauty school education remark or should I say cut! He lacks people skills, respect, common sense, humility, and intelligence. Johnny you need to be Blowed Out! If it wasn't for BRAVO where would his products be? I sure hope BRAVO gets a huge cut of the profits, and look forward to the class action lawsuits against Johnny for defective hair products.
