I'm the audiance of queer eye for the straight guy in Hong

Kong. When I saw Kyan in the show,I started to watch this

show. My classmates and I also like Jai and Carson.

Thanks for giving us this great show.

my_guy_ky: I will look around for it, but I may not found it since I live in Brazil. I am looking for an alcohol free product around here for now. Thanks for the tip.

raindog: I am from Brazil as you can see. I hope your prevision about my accent becomes true. It would be really handy. Thanks a lot

Wannabefab - Thanks for the tips. I prefer products that can be shipped or bought around here. Even though I will go to NY next month, I think there is little point in getting. used to products that I won't be able to buy again later.

FraggleChick86 - Thank you and very nice quote

Depoetic - Oh my God!!! You really scared me out with that. What about other sugar substitutes? For instance, I love diet yogurts, non-fat and lots of protein with great taste. But if this stuff can kill me (don't know if it has Nutrasweet), I better re-evaluate my eating habits. My "making better" is getting harder .

I will try this product, but I might not keep it for long term, because of the reasons I explained to Wannabefab above. Thank you very much for everything.

To all - Now for new doubts (as you can see, I need a lot of help):
I share Madadam's problem. The weather here is usually pretty hot, and I don't know how to look good, or classy, in this conditions (the better I can do is dress shirt with dress pants, not a cool choice for hot sunny days).
I like to use "dry-fit" shirts/t-shirts. I hope they're called the same at US. Very comfortable, but maybe too teenage to regular use. Any help would be really appreciated.

Another thing. I read in some random magazine that it’s better for the skin if I don't use soap in most of my body parts when I shower (just water). I feel cleaner with soap, so I bought a moisturizer soap (package says its 1/4 moisturizer). What is better for the skin, my soap or just water?

And just to keep it current, I repeat my previous question. Can anybody tell me a good, knowledgeable hair stylist in NY?

Thank you very much to for all your help, everybody!

Nutrasweet breaks down into it's original separate chemicals when it reaches 80* farenheit. The human body temp: 98.6*F. One of those ingredients is a primary solvent in paint thinners. Oncologists are seeing incresing numbers of patients with brain tumors - and are noting their patient's primary consumption of foods and drinks containing Nutrasweet. Neurologists are finding patients with sudden onsets of seizures to be high NS consumers as well. They are also seeing a rise in Multiple Sclerosis connected to NS consumption.

That's pretty scary stuff. Just on a personal note, if I drink anything hot that contains Nutrasweet, it makes me very nauseous. And a few years ago I got in the habit of having a diet 7up every afternoon at work. I realized that about an hour after drinking it, I'd start feeling weird and kind of dizzy. I have heard some people are more sensitive to it than others, but it just doesn't sound like consuming it is a very good idea.

Got a question here which is mainly for my mum. She wants a good foundation that leaves her face less matte-looking. She feels that the one she's got just now (Estee Lauder)leaves her face looking too dry and dull. Can anyone suggest any decent products?
Also, is there such a thing as exfoliating hand cream or can you just get a body exfoliator(sp.?)
Thanks in advance for any help!

You are very welcome! I am almost positive that you can get the Burts Bees in Brazil. The exchange student that we had in my senior year was from Sao Paolo, and he was addicted to the stuff. He may order it direct from that website, though. Luckily, it is really easy for you to get good cotton and linen products right in your own country!

Go for the classics, my friend! A linen suit is your friend! They are lightweight, they breate, and they are absolutely stunning! They also come in a variety of styles to best suit your body type. Think Pele in that khaki linen suit he wore before his games.

Go back through the episodes, and you will find plenty of hair stylists in the NY metro area. That is, after all, where QE is filmed. Kyan would only go to the most knowledgeable stylists in the city!
Take care, stay cool, and enjoy your trip!

Estee Lauder died a few days ago at the age of 97 leaving her sons, Ronald and Leonard, to run the multibillion dollar empire she began.

The Estee Lauder family of companies include, among others, Prescriptives, Clinique, MAC, Origins, and Bobbi Brown, my personal favorite. You can buy these products online at http://www.gloss.com.

I do not work for any of these companies. I just happen to like and recommend Bobby Brown cosmetics. MAC makes a great facial wash.

I have something like that on my hairline. Stress seems to aggravate it. Nizorol is very pleasant and effective, although it's expensive. Neutrogena T-Gel is stinky, but somewhat cheaper, just as effective and dermatologist-recommended. As for the rash on your face, you might want to ask a dermatologist.

I'm male and have red hair and have trouble trying to choose colours that I'd look good in and also what kinda hair style that I could do to make me look good. What can a red head do to look good? Can anyone help with some ideas for clothing and hair styles? Thanks.

Greetings Happydude! Sorry I took so long getting back to you! When it comes to your hairstyle - you're going to need to go to someone that understands how to take your face shape and hair texture and best suit it to both your body, age AND your lifestyle. You need a hands on person to give you that advice. Call around your area and see if you can find a men's salon. Folks at Supercuts are trained to give you what YOU demand... not speak up for what they THINK you need... and the good ol' boys at a barbershop might not do more than a standard cut. You can call and ask at those places if there is someone willing to guide you... but your best bet would be a salon specializing in catering to men.
Stop by your local bookstore's newstand, see if they have any magazines for hair stylists. Look at cuts on men who have your same face shape and hair texture (ie: wavy, curly, straight, fine, kinky, thick, coarse, etc.) (Color's not that big of a factor with cut.) See what you like on people similar to you and take that to your stylist.

As far as clothing - now HERE's where your hair color comes in. If you've never looked at a color wheel in your life, stop by an arts & crafts store and pick up a detailed one.

"Red" hair comes in MANY forms... just look at the hair color aisle. There's everything from Strawberry (or "Golden") blonde to deep auburn which is nearly brunette. Clothing choices are going to depend on your hair color shade. If you're hair runs along the same color lines as the comedian, "Carrot Top", you need to head away from silvers, greys and the more crayola pastels.

Take the color chart. See what colors are exact opposites. Opposite colors of the exact same color value cause the retina of the eye to vibrate and accentuate attention in a harsh way. Red and green are opposites. put the two pure forms together - and they almost hurt your eyes. Take one pure color and match it against a washed out (lighter) or muddy (darker) version of it's opposite; and you have an attractive match. Look on the color chart. "Carrot Top" red is actually an orange. The opposite of Orange is blue. Clothing in the blue family - from violet to sea green will have a greater presence on you than orange, reds and yellows. As a red head you need to wear color... just keep the heavy crayola colors as accents. You'll look amazing in Khaki colored and black suits. Navy suits need to be very nicely detailed because your hair will make it into the most powerful outfit in your ensemble.

Is your skin of a gold hue or pink? Are your eyes light or dark? These will determine the color values you need to choose also.

Silver jewelry won't have as much impact as gold... and if you find neck chains with colored stones? Go for it.

Autumn like olive-golds may look truly fab on you. Just avoid drab greys and again palest crayola pastels. So many people say red heads can't wear pink. That's not true. It depends on your hair shade. Again - if it's carrot - you can go with a muted salmon pink and get away with it. Pink will accent your skin tones.

Light eyes? (Blue to green?) Pepper your wardrobe with a range of greens and medium blues. Dark eyes? Pepper your wardrobe with warm golden browns - and avoid those nasty pinkish greyed down browns.

I hope this helps... and again, I'm sorry I took so long in responding!

Peace and grace to you! --De

Summer is coming, little too hot for pants, particularly where I like to see and be seen, what should I do for footwear? Can often wear some leather slides or such, but sometimes need a closed-toew shoe. Suggestions?

Hmmmmm... Closed toe, huh? There are so many stylish canvas shoes made these days - some heel-less like a clog, some like the standard boating shoe... and they all look wonderful with shorts. There are even some made in light colored leathers punched decoratively with holes that are terribly attractive. If you have shoes in similar lightness or darkness values to the shorts you are wearing - (and you've taken Kyan's advice to "tan the hoofs") you should look absolutely FAB!

Thank you very much to for all your help, everybody!

You know... everytime they come out with a new sugar subtitute - a couple years later there's always an "OOOPS" report. I've shifted all my consumption to teas and I use honey that is manufactured in the area that I'm staying.

Honey is a complex sugar and the body has to work to break it down. Also - by consuming local honey, your immune system is better able to fend off histamine reactions and you have fewer atmospheric allergies.

You can get unsweetend products and add honey to them. Teas are now available in cans and bottles.

My mom is diabetic and I'm hypoglycemic... so sugar is a BIG deal in the family. After the whole Nutrasweet research - I found a substitute actually made from cane sugar that has no calories and no carbs... it's called "Splenda" and it comes in yellow packaging. There's another called "Diabeti-sweet" they say doesn't break down at high temps. I haven't tried cooking with that yet.

Just know - your body understands that it can get water from food. Sometimes the hypothalymus sends a "hunger" message when you're thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty - you're already in a dehydrated state... so keep up with the water.

Caffine is a diuretic - it makes your body remove fluids. It's great for energy... but you need to replace the water in your system without adding more caffine. (You know, there's a lot of flavored waters out there now too! Gattorade has one with vitamins!)

I wish I could help with a hairstylist... but I'm half a country away here in Texas. Maybe some of our NYC folks will pipe in with some help for ya!

((((((BIG HUGS))))))) It is SOOOO cool that the guys have given you courage to step up to being a better you.

Hon... I watched my baby sister (Yeah right, "baby"... she'll be 34 in November!), battle exema for years and I learned one thing... your doctor is your best ally in the battle against skin problems. Seek out a dermatologist - because he/she will know how to advise you. There may be products out there which will help, and products that will cause even greater discomfort. He/she may be able to help with items available only by prescription. ...If you've been to a dermatologist and are unhappy with his/her treatment, then try another. It's no different than getting a second opinion when dealing with a serious illness... don't be afraid to get a second opinion if the first one isn't satisfying you.

Meanwhile - seek out cleansers (not soap) that are dye and perfume free. Seek out hair styling products that are also dye and perfume free.

Also - look to your diet. Are you one of those folks that has all but eliminated fats from your diet? Your brain and your skin need monounsaturated fats to be healthy. My sis's doc had her swallow a tablespoon of olive oil a day... plus up her water intake, and her skin healed much faster.

Also - remember to not forego moisturizers... just try to find the lightest and fastest absorbing products available.

Almay is a wonderful line of products.

I hope this helps a little, and hope to see you around often! Peace in your world! --De

Caffeine does more to your body than that. Caffeine in small doses is just fine, it's not going to do anything to you. But a constant consumption of caffeine can lead to an honest addiction; in all reality, caffeine is the most addictive legal drug w/o an age limit on the market. If you get seriously dependent on caffeine, and try to stop, you can go through "caffeine withdrawl" which is, obviously, nothing like being dopesick, but you really want to be careful about the amount of caffeine you consume daily.
It will also make you moodier, regardless of any addiction, because when your brain sees caffeine, it thinks its this drug that triggers your endorphins, so when you come off your caffeine "high", your emotions kind of go in this crash-landing phase.

I could go on & on for days (I've used caffeine for my science projects the past 3 years), and I'm not trying to be depressing or saying caffeine will kill you - it's not always a bad thing, but...serious dependence can do you damage in the end.

Just my little health tip for the day.

Mmmm! I love honey! My only problem with it is that it solidifies before long, making it a little user-unfriendly. Does anyone know why it does this and how to prevent it, if possible?

I don't drink coffee anymore, not even decaf. It gives me bad breath and even makes my urine stink. Regular coffee makes me jittery and gives me headaches. Now, I'm a tea-aholic. A good black tea (like Darjeeling, Pekoe or Assam) gives just enough of a kick to gently wake me up in the morning without jitters, headaches or odors. Green and white teas are even lower in caffiene, and they contain antioxidants. These may be better as an afternoon pick-me-up tea. And of course to relax or warm up at night, an herbal tea (also known as a tisane, as Ticktick mentioned some time ago) is ideal. The problem with my cup-or-two-a-day tea habit is that the teeth will get yellow if I don't brush immediately afterward. Keep a whitening toothpaste and Crest Whitestrips on hand if you're hooked on coffee or tea.

I have to deal with this a lot. The water in honey evaporates... all you have to do is spoon it into a little pan and re-melt it over low heat. Stir often, you don't want caramel... (Unless you DO!)

I had a friend bring me honey from home (Pennsylvania) and it wasn't a clover honey. It was nearly black and had a really neat taste. When I left it alone in the back of the cabinet - it didn't solidify... it fermented! I had BRANDY honey! (Sure wish I knew what bar those bees were hanging out at!)

Just my little health tip for the day.

Lordy, could I tell you some things. I was diagnosed diabetic on Friday the 13th of April 1993 - 11yrs now. Diabetes and high blood pressure run in my family.

Back when I was diagnosed, the docs knew nil about how to handle diabetes...well most of them didn't. All they would say to me is "watch your diet or you could end up with amputations". Excusewhat? Why? Dumb looks - something like "I'm a doctor, don't question me".

In 2000, I started experiencing a burning pain in my index finger. I reported it to my doctor because I went for regular diabetic checkups (I'm diet controlled). My blood sugar was fine so it was assumed the pain would go away. In less than a month's time it moved through my fingers and toes. IF YOU HAVE A SERIOUS CONDITION, PLEASE USE THE INTERNET AS A RESOURCE TO RESEARCH IT! My clinical doc didn't take me seriously so I made him write a referral to a neurological specialist who confirmed the diagnosis I made on myself. I told him my B vitamin level was never checked, he THEN wanted to check it - TOO LATE, YOU FRIGGIN' *****! I'm getting sliced all over my body by invisible butcher knives and you want to play hide the needle? NOT!

Peripheral neuropathy can come on you fast, as in a few months time, or slowly over the years. I was experiencing the symptoms and didn't know it...especially sleepiness. And I was making it worse (here's where all this ties in) by ingesting caffiene in the form of coffee. In doing my research, I found out that caffiene promotes the deteriorization of the nerves. It is also a cancer causing agent. [Must be why the coffee association started a new lie saying caffiene is good for you - I freaked when I read that.] By the time I learned of this, the neuropathy had crippled my hands and I could barely walk. I stopped cold turkey. I also found vitamin supplements to add to my diet that took the pain away.

As well as the vitamins work, I have progressed beyond any chance of restoration. If you have neuropathy and continue to indulge in the elements that progress it, then eventually the condition cannot be reversed - and it only gets worse as time goes by...at different rates for different people, but still worse. And it amazes me when I talk to someone who has the beginning symptoms that I tell them caffiene is a terrible factor in their condition and they say "I can't give up my coffee". AAARGH! Fine then! They must really not care about hugging their child or their love, or feeling the wind on their skin.

There are two types of neuropathy you can get - pain or numbness. People who "need" their caffiene better pray to dear God for numbness. I'll say it again, they better pray to dear God for numbness, because they sure as he*l don't want the pain.

Causes of PN (peripheral neuropathy):
any neuroligical illness/condition like diabetes or stroke
nerve damage to a specific part of the body
alcoholism

Symptoms:
sleepiness
forgetfulness
lethargy (exhaustion)
tightening of the throat (feels like slow strangulation)
numbness usually starting in the fingers and/or toes
pain usually starting in the fingers and/or toes

Am I trying to scare ya? Heck yeah! This is serious! Docs are only beginning to do studies for this. Have doctors keep track of your vitamin B level. For more information, do a search for "peripheral neuropathy" and check this link to start with:

I found Baby Bee's products at Amazon (didn't find the Bag Balm, suggested by Depoetic, though). I will try some, with the cotton gloves tip.
I also got in touch with some hair stylists from the site. They seem pretty good.

Now about the linen suits, I think it would still be too hot for me (Brazil is hot, you know ). I mean, I can use it at night, winter or closed places, but there are times when even a long sleeve shirt seems extremely hot to me. I was thinking more in finding a "sporty" look to use everyday, when outside work. Any tips?

to everybody - I see Kyan giving everyone on the show hair products to be using just before brushing (or jzusing, I have no idea how its spelled) the hair. What is the point of those products? Are they like gels or mousses, because they do not seem to be (people's hair is still soft after they use it).

I used gel for a while and my hair was kind of rigid with it, plus I hated to have that greasy stuff all over it, and it was a pain to find the right shape to my hair (one day I run out of gel and literally every girl that I met said I was looking better, then I get rid of that curse ).

Well, I am getting off subject here. Anyway, what are those products to? Are there any stuff to make my hair cooler while still looking fresh, but not too moist? (my brown hair becomes dark when too moist).
Thank you all for the help you are giving me so far.

I'm no expertise at this whole hair product thing, but if you go to the "Hip Tips" section of the webpage, they'll list every hair product Kyan has given a SG every episode; if the titles don't make their uses clear, you can always go check them out & see what the directions say

One thing for sure though: they are NOT gel. To quote Kyan: "Gel is so 1983. I was using this stuff in high school."

Thanks my_guy_ky and TFF! Yup, besides my daughter, QE is my life! Ok, well a pretty darn huge part of it, lol!

TFF, I am Thom fan to the nine! BUT, I would be nowhere without the information I have received from other fans here on the board and my incredible friend D (Deana) from str8girlseyeonthefab5.com. As confuddled as my mind often gets, they all have been very patient with me and have supported me when I went to see Thom in Cleveland and Carson here in Buffalo.

Regarding Thom's graduation status - hmmm...maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But let's think about it. How good is the boy? He worked at a couple of high profile designer offices before establishing his own very successful company - and that was pre-QE. Queer Eye didn't make him talented, he's on Queer Eye because he IS talented. People genuinely like his style - he's a natural. Whether or not he graduated from a university/college does not affect his skills. And with that in mind, I'll call him whatever he prefers to be called. At the moment it's "interior designer" so I'd say go with that

TTB

Thom went to Syracuse University, but he ended up a few credits short of actually getting his degree, though he did walk in the ceremony. He probably would've finished except that he was already getting some amazingly good job offers, so he went to work instead. I'd say this is a case where on-the-job training instead of finishing a degree was clearly the right move.

Wow. I've been posting my lil' butt off and now I'm a "fashionista". I feel like such a fraud with this title, though. Ghod knows I try, but this is one area I really need help with. My main problem is finding pants that fit because I'm short. A girls' size 14 fits me sideways and lengthwise, but there isn't as good a selection of children's clothing as juniors' and petites. (probably because kids normally grow out of their clothing, unlike me) The juniors' styles are my favorites. The length is too long, but they fit me sideways as long as it can be snug enough to stay on my waist and not bag at the butt, but allow enough room for my saddlebag thighs (ugh) - I don't want a stuffed sausage look! The petites' sizes may fit better, but the styles seem geared toward the more "mature" woman. Shoes are hard to find, because I have Cinderella feet. Only expensive shoes fit me. Cheap shoes run big. Tops aren't a problem, usually, and a number of dresses and skirts fit allright.
In Carson's hotline Hip Tip last week, he mentioned something about sticking to classics if you're not sure if something will look right on you. So, maybe, if I'm not too confident about my lower half but am comfortable with my upper half, it would make sense for me to wear pants and skirts in classic shapes and colors, and to wear tops and dresses that are more showy or edgy.

Wow. I've been posting my lil' butt off and now I'm a "fashionista". I feel like such a fraud with this title, though. Ghod knows I try, but this is one area I really need help with.

And here I was gonna try to get the congrats in before you noticed! Silly me! I should know better!
**Applause for My_Guy_Ky** Congrats on the new title!
Peace in your world today, girl! --De

I need help...have to buy a queen-size platform bed in LA and I want some style with not much budget. I remember an episode where the Fab 5 used a modular and very modern new furniture line that looked great and had great prices according to the guys. What's the name of that line and how can I get it where I am?
my_guy_ky
OMG, De, you're now a fashionista, too! Whoo-hoo!
Also congrats to FiliciaFanatic the aspiring gourmet!

Are you near Burbank? There's an Ikea store there.

Queer Eye didn't make him talented, he's on Queer Eye because he IS talented. TTB

I agree! I think he is REALLY talented! His rooms look amazing! I think they are much better then the rooms that are decorated on Trading Spaces and other shows.
Don't you just "luuve" Thom?!?!?!?
FiliciaFanatic
Hey, sweet, "aspiring gourmet," that actually fits.

Then again, so would "aspiring designer," "aspiring fashionista," etc.

Hi, my partner and I have started using Biotherm Homme (made in Monaco) and it is one of the more expensive skincare product ranges. We came across it duty free at Bangkok airport in January, on our way home to Australia from Europe. We would be interested in what others think of it. Are we paying too much? The T-Pur line is excellent for oily skin. And it smells and feels great.

Wendi, try HSN's Serious Skin Care Acne Wash. It's worked wonders on my breakouts. You can go to their website on HSN, it's quite reasonable. There's also package deals on there under 70. dollars. Check it out!

Your boyfriend and I share the same problem. I'm quite tall also (6'2"). Look for straight (No pun intended!) fits with hardly no pleats. Kohl's has some good bargans in this size area. Plus, try looking at outlet centers surrounding your area. Read some of Carson's tips also, they are very helpful!

WOW, Daniel - I've never even seen the product line, but it sounds amazing! I DO hope you stop in and visit with us often! Welcome to our wild wooly little world!

Peace and grace to you! --De

TTB, Darlin' - thanks for this info. When my folks came to stay with me I made mom stand here and read this. She is diabetic - drinks caffine laden diet soda like water - and had been experiencing numbness and pain for a couple years now.

You may be savin' lives, hon, one Hip Tip at a time.
Peace! --De

I must say, I'd like to see Kyan use more products that can be found at Sally Beauty Supply. While we don't carry the salon brands such as Paul Mitchell and Aveda, we do carry comparable brands that for the most part(and I say for the most part because some people just have to have that 18 dollar bottle of shampoo)are wonderful and do an incredible job. I've worked at Sally's for almost three years now, and just about everything I've used, I've come to love.

For those of you who have the book, remember the picture of the rosemary mint hair gel? You can only find it at Sally's(I was so pumped when I saw the picture, trust me, lol)

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that if you're looking for something a bit more affordable than that 18 dollar bottle of Paul Mitchell, then shop at Sally's. I know I probably sound like a bad advertisement, but I can't help it. I think as cheap as some of the straight guys have said they are, they might appreciate the alternative.

*shrugs* just my two cents though, hope my points make sense:)
