Hi all,
Looking for some advice on finding pants for my boyfriend. He's very tall (about 6 feet 2 inches) and also very skinny. This means that his pants tend to be very baggy, as most of the pants for people of his height tend to assume a bigger build. This also means his pants tend to be slightly too short, as he gets to a stage when he just can't deal with them any baggier. Any good places to shop (online or in NYC) appreciated. Belts can only help so much!

What you're talking about here is a matter of size really. Pants that fit him should be available anywhere. For tighter fitting pants, you generally will need designer brands though. Diesel has some slim pants. Helmut Lang pants tend to be cut slimmer as well. I would also say to try women's pants, but his height may not allow that. For designer pants at a much lower cost, make sure to visit Century 21 (On Cortland St.), Loehmann's (17th and 6th I believe) and Filene's Basement (right near Loehmann's, not sure exactly where). Good luck.

I am a woman who could use some tips. I am 32, and try to take care of my skin. My problem is that I find that my skin is dry, yet I am getting pimples. When I was younger I never had pimples. What is the deal? I am blessed with looking younger then my age. (I am usually guessed to be 25) I would like to keep this natural youthful appearence going on without pimples, wrinkles, and dry patches. Can someone recommend something that will not break my bank? thanks.. p.s I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!

Yes. It makes me more confident on what I buy. I have some hints and secrets for those who are short on dough like me.
-Outlet shopping centers are the best for fashion. Same with Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, Ross, TJMaxx, Stein Mart, Kohl's and Burlington Coat Factory. It's cheaper than the mall.
-If you find good fashion on sale, carpe diem.
-Whenever you're cooking, find ideas for a good side dish. What I used is a chopped zucchini, chopped carrots, onions and garlic. Sautée them on a skillet with some olive oil and it would be done. It would bring some color to the main dish.
-Find some new ways to improve your salad. Use such things like radicchio, arugula, spinach and a whole lot of colorful vegetables.
-In Europe, the salad is served after the dish, not before like here in America. Salad is used as a digestive.

If you're having trouble figuring out which colors work best for your skin tone, eye color, and hair color, you should take a look at the book Color For Men, by Carole Jackson. The book was published in the 80's, so the clothing on the men in the pictures is out of fashion. The principles of color selection, however, are timeless.
This book has saved me much money avoiding clothes that I'd end up not wearing anyway, because the color does not complement my features. The Color for Men system helps you to choose clothes you can mix-and-match successfully, as opposed to buying "outfits".
The book is unfortunately out-of-print, but is available readily at used book stores, and on Amazon.com. Once you determine the right color scheme, you can buy a wallet of color swatches to take with you on shopping trips. These are available at (http://www.colormebeautifulbook.com/html/ColorForMen--TheBook.html).
Any other book recommendations?

Hey wendiss - I'm 38 and on my birthday I was mistaken for 20...I wrote out a big, fat check right there, lol. What I do is drink LOTS of water (keeps skin hydrated), I rarely drink pop or anything carbonated, I don't wear makeup, don't drink, and don't smoke. All those things can contribute to aging of the skin as well as deprive it of looking it's best. I use antibacterial soap to cleanse my face (I wonder what Kyan would think about that)and the lotion I use afterwards usually contains aloe vera in it. Aloe vera has a healing quality. Basically, that's it.

Wendy,
It could be hormones. Do you find that you get pimples prior to menstruation?
I still get pimples (primarily on my T-zone) prior to menstruation. Try Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid Solution (see (http://www.cosmeticscop.com/shop/product.asp?CODE=PC201&PAGETYPE=S) and a low concentration (5% or less) benzoyl peroxide lotion on your pimples.

I am just like you, I'm 36 but get mistaken for 25 all the time and I also have dry skin that breaks out. Shouldn't wrinkles and pimples be an either/or deal? I used to use anti-acne washes, toners, anti-wrinkle moisturizers, but it turned my face kind of red and it kept feeling dry and breaking out. Then I discovered one product that does everything. I had very sensitive skin and everything I put on it only irritated it and made me break out. I've been using Philosophy's "Hope in a Jar" for dry/sensitive skin for almost a year now and my skin is soft, fewer wrinkles, next to no pimples, and a healthy tone. It's not as inexpensive as drugstore brands, but one jar lasts forever and the results are so worth it I will never use anything else! Hope this helps. L

For skincare, take a look at the Joey New York line of products. Their "Calm and Correct" line is great for sensitive skin. Sephora carries it, and (www.joeynewyork.com) has a complete listing of products.

I love this show, after getting introduced to it by a customer--I work at a dry cleaner's. My little suggestions come in view of that...
When something says dry clean, *DO* spend the money on dry cleaning it! Read your labels before you buy, because I've had things come through my door that said "Do not wash, do not dryclean; wipe with damp cloth and lay flat to dry"... And it was sweaters. You can so easily ruin things by thinking you'll save money by washing them yourself.
ANother vehement bit... DON'T self-treat anything, it can only make it worse. If you spill soda on yourself and try to get it out with.. oh, Shout!... and it doesn't come out, now the cleaners has to get out the Shout! first and then the soda. And hope it all comes out.
=) My two pence on some hints & tips for your d/c...

Okay here are two tips for the fast approaching holiday season:
1. To get nasty price tags off of boxes, heat the tag with a lighter for a few seconds. The tag will peel right off.
2. For price tags on glass use a little lighter fluid or some cleaning solution (like Windex) and let it soak for a bit. The tag should wipe right off.

For our third anniversary, I wanted to do something really special for my wife because she's been really stressed out lately with work/school. Being a romantic guy, I took a page from one of the episodes and decided to try my hand at making Ted's chocolate mousse for our dessert (FYI: I also made dinner for her: a vegetarian "Fresh Garden Salad Quiche" with a simple salad on the side). I have to point out that what is not stated anywhere that perhaps should be is that the temperatures for stoves varies from one stove to another. I tried heating the heavy cream until the temperature hit 160 degrees and all I ended up with is funky smelling scrambled eggs. Here's how I decided to make it, and if you use this I hope you like it. I think it turned out very well and my wife was completely blown away!
P.S. I also got some red rose pedals and spread them out on the round dining room table with 3 pillar candles standing in a black ceramic dish with polished rocks in some water as the centerpiece and played some of her favorite Celtic music on the cd player for that extra romantic touch.
USING 8 OZ. SEMI-SWEET BAKER'S CHOCOLATE,
(1) Whisk together 3/4 cup cream, egg yolks, vanilla, and sugar (Splenda sugar packets - 7 packets equals 1 Tablespoon and no salt) in a metal bowl until combined well
(2) Heat the entire mixture in a 1 quart sauce pan until hot. Stir constantly until you begin to see little bits of egg forming, then remove from heat.
(3) Pour custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl.
(4) Melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl on HIGH for 5 minutes (or until it's melted) then pour the chocolate into the custard mixture and whisk until smooth.
Beat the remaining cream until it holds stiff peaks, then add the chocolate. Whisk to combine until no marbling can be seen.
Pour entire mixture from the bowl into some small coffee cups (I think they're supposed to be used for cappuccino) and got 3 1/2 servings out of it all and not as much as the original recipe states. Put the cups (or glasses or whatever you decide to use) in the refrigerator for at least six (6) hours. Let stand for a few minutes at room temperature before serving.

Hi,
I'm a 5'11 man with short legs and long waist. Looking for a clothing tip to fit my body type. For example, I have always tucked in my shirts, maybe I shouldn't. Should I tuck in a tee shirt, but wear an untucked shirt over it. Or is there a type of pants that have a higher waist (or would that look to 50's)?
Thanks

A couple of months ago, my wife forced me to watch the show. Now I'm hooked.
I have lost 60lbs. in the last year and went from a size 42 to a size 36. Needless to say, I needed a new wardrobe, not that I had one before. Furthermore, due to the fact that I was quite heavy, I never cared much about my appearance. With the help of my wife (I call her Fab 0.5), and info we get from the show and this website, she has improved me a lot. I do have color in my closet, other than denim. I was so pleased that they went to Orvis. That's my new favorite store.
In terms of grooming, I would recommend that you check out the Clarins counter next time you are at a Dept. store (we have Lord & Taylors). Thier men's line is excellent, specially the shave ease.
One thing I notice is women looking at me. A couple have gone as far as actually hitting on me!
This show goes beyond the obvious. I think the success stems not only from the make overs and the remodelling; it addresses our sense of caring and support. It also shows that beyond the hair, the clothing, etc.; beyond sterotypes, both gay and straight, is demonstrate that we are all human, we are all the same. IT TAKE A VILLAGE, PEOPLE!!!

I have a couple of questions:
1. I have exceptionally dry hands and am looking for an an appropriate cream or lotion that is readily accessable that will fix this problem. I've tried some drug store OTC products that have made my hands feel greasy and did not work.
2. The skin of my face is mostly normal-to-dry except my nose which is oily and has large pores. What can I do to make my nose normal?
3. I'm a little overweight (by about 15 lbs) and for that reason my wife and I like the way I look in pleated pants. I've followed much of Carson's advice but I don't really understand what's wrogn with pleated pants which I have been wearing (my closet is filled with cuffed and pleated khakis - is this not the main staple of the business casual wardrobe?). But I'm open to advice on this matter. There are no wire hangers in my closet.
Thanks in advance!

Also you could try using Witch Hazel a very mild astringent on the pimples themselves, it's less drying then alcohol and it's cheap and won't break the bank! You can find it in any drugstore. Use a cotton ball to apply! Hope that helps you!
PS I don't think Kyan would approve of using anti-bacterial soaps on your face at all.

Queer Eye has changed my life! I even cleaned my entire closet for Carson! ha-ha. Threw away all my outdated "expired" clothes too! I have a tip for you guys if you wear cologne! There is nothing worse than someone who reeks of cologne so here is what you do!
Pick out what you are gonna wear before your shower, then turn your clothes inside out and spray them lightly with your cologne, while you are in the shower, and applying your products ha-ha, your clothes will dry. Then simply put your clothes on! Remeber to reverse the inside out thing though! ha-ha. I do this everyday and I never feel like I am wearing too much cologne...but just enough.
Who loves the Fab-Five more than me? Not many.

Being a big&tall guy, I have started wearing flat front pants and vertical-striped shirts. What I don't understand is the shaving techniques Kyan explains and watching the Fab Five wince when a guy shaves up the face. If I don't shave up the face, my girlfriend doesn't dare kiss me and risk those unsightly unshaven-face burns. I also look and feel unshaven if I only shave down.
Is there a period of time where my face will adjust to just shaving down?

After my husband started watching the show with me we've learned how to dress him properly. No more pleated khacki pants...flat fronts...he's got a bit of a belly and flat fronts are much better.
Also, getting him out of just solid khacki's ; green, blue, gray etc and instead to get him in a pattern is a bit more work but I'm getting there!
Thanks FAB FIVE for all the great tips!

Hey Gigs, I generally will shave in the shower for one, the steam softens even more plus I actually use womens shaving cream it lends it self nicely to rough hair. Shave with the grain first, then go back and shave against it,using more cream. This works for me and use a really good aftershave cream, for sensitive skin. I like the Nivea for men line of face products. I wash the face with them before the shower.
Good Luck hope that helped!

Gigs,
I have a very thick beard and like you, I used to shave against the grain. The solution was to use a pre-shave oil (I went with Clarins' "Shave ease") and a shaving cream instead of a foam. In the show Kyan suggests to use the oil only before shaving, but now I also use it in the evenings just because my beard is so thick. Also, when shaving, rinse the razor constantly with the hottest water possible. I use a hydrating balm instead of aftershave. In the evenings I go with a hydrating gel.
It took me about a week of re-learning how to shave with the grain and also perpendicular but never against. Also, take your time shaving. Press hard, but not too hard, and glide the razor slooooowly for short distances, 1 to 2 inches. Is so nice, I now even look forward to shaving.

My mother is in desperate need of a good gay friend! She is trying to remodel her house and can't make any decisions. One quick question. Would you paint the celing in a room that has a vaulted celing or would you just pain the walls? It is a large room and is all white, we are going to add some color but I do not want to have to do it more than once. Please help!

I don't know what Thom would do and I REALLY wish he read this board so he could help because no one touches his talent! But if it is a very large room, you may want to leave the ceiling white and paint the walls a darker color or reverse it and darken the ceiling and leave the walls white. It would depend on how your mother wants to feel in the room. If she wants it cozier around her, I suggest the darker walls to bring the room inward. If she wants the illusion of a not-so-high room, then she might consider the darker ceiling (not too dark). A darker ceiling should create the feeling of a lowered ceiling. But I'm no expert, anyone else got tips?

We have vaulted ceilings in our home. It was brand new when we moved in and EVERYTHING was white. We have been painting rooms when we get a chance. The bathrooms were the only rooms that we painted the ceiling. All other have colored walls with a white ceiling. I think it looks pretty good. We also have white framing around our windows, whic probably helps.

I am gay and a big CARSON fan! I can tell you what is wrong with pleats...most straight guys who may have a little pooch or belly thinks that the pleats make them look slimmer, by hiding their belly. It doesn't work though!! Flat fronts make you look thinner, even if you are a thin guy, pleats will make you look like you have a belly. So, try to replace your pleated pants (one at a time) with flat fronts. I hope that helps you! Happy Shopping!

In my hard-scrabble student days, I used to work p/time schlepping trays and glasses in the VIP hospitality area - corporate boxes, tents and a cigar lounge.
Looking at the clientele - I got a flash. You know that creepy saying. One day, you'll look in the mirror at yourself as a young man and you'll realise you are shaving the face that is your fathers. Erp!!
But, enough of that nightmare scenario. Real life is bad enough.
Why are so many older men just so damned ugly?
I always discretely concealed my dismay, as one does, in the subservient role of "kitchen-drab and menial" - but my perfect mouth would purse with disdain as I watched the "manscape". Not a pretty locale.
Those puce-complexioned, A-type personality, executive-track "45yr & over" men skulling back the VSOP, 18 year-old single malts and high fat/bad fat snacks - all the while, sucking on their expensive cigars. And they think they look so damn hot in their Armani.
I just blanched and shuddered.
You get the key to the executive washroom and then what? It is all downhill, and that road goes all the way to Ugly Town, if you don't pay attention.
After a few years of stripping the Presidential Suite mini-bars clean and sampling the high-fat end of the menu - Ta da! In troop the spider veins and broken capilliaries in the nose - the "gin blossom" boysenberry-nose, look.
Just a sample of ya rocketing blood pressure indicators. And that guilty, guilty "That's Hooooorrrible - apple abdomen, locked, loaded and larded with "FAT."
High stress life? Stay off the top-shelf spirits and, honey - that means the suds and canape intake gets a severe crimp as well.
Walk. No - don't just walk to the beemer and then to the elevator and then to the desk. Use your feet as locomotors.
And puh-lease don't take up jogging in frenzy of guilty desperation - you'll blow your knees and then your ventricles.
Train yourself from an early age and you will be an attractive older man - Eat in moderation, drink in moderation and get those feet's boogying.

WWTFD? You know how I made a crack earlier that a graphic tee would not be "Carson approved?" At the time, I was picturing something with a full-color press photo of them posing in suits, with a big gaudy logo or something like that. But on the other hand, I could see designing a T-shirt with an esoteric graphic on it with an inside reference to the show.
Okay, picture this: You know how monogrammed clothes are everywhere right now? Its like a Laverne DiFazio throwback. But I could totally see putting the initials "CIT" on a shirt or lapel pin. Or I could see putting "WWJRD?" in a rounded rectangle across your chest with "What Would Jai Rodriquez Do?" in smaller letters underneath. I am a graphic designer, so I love designing my own T-shirts and stuff. The only sad thing is, inkjet iron-ons get ratty really quickly. "Horrrible."

Hello all.
My problem is that, though I love designer/fashionable jeans, I often can't find enough inseam (36") and leg room with so little waist(30/32). It's almost as if I'd have to have jeans made to my body. I've never been to a big an tall store, but I've been told that it's not an either/or situation; you have to be both big and tall. Anyone have any suggestions for me?
